Well done Chris! Great video, love seeing you involved in topics that you have a passion for, as it really comes across and makes the viewer even more interested, you really should do more presenting because you are a natural!
SPOILER for Kelly's Heroes At first I thought it was gonna be an American happy ending while an Italian Job ending would have fit better. But Oddball fixed it with him buying the -pimped T-34- Tiger.
I feel like Chris and Lindy could do a collaboration video or two that I would be very invested in. I loved Chris's Discovery shows on greatest/massive machines.
Chris Barrie has cred. He's a mechanic nut, restores cars as a hobby including the engines and gearboxes. Yeah, and I agree with all his choices as well for all the same reasons. And I used to be a Tank Commander.
Ohh.. To say the Merlin engine sounds better in the Centurion than in the Spitfire. That's about as anti-British as a pro-British statement can be. lol
The spitfire like the Vulcan is one of those annoying aircraft for being good but unfairly stealing the lime light from better designs. Like the mosquito or hurricane and the Handley page Victor.
Scorpion.....? meh........I love this channel and you as an actor! So I will agree haha! I feel like Chieftain should have been number 1 if we hadn't put a potato in the power pack compartment..... GREAT VIDEO!! :-)
Matsimus Gaming why I'm I not surprised to see you here 😄 I knew he would pick the scorpion the CVRT's are my favourites as well they can just about do anything
At my first listening, I thought, somehow, they were able to gathered up all them actors to do an audiobook! Only late I found out Rimmer did all of them!
The "five Shermans to take on one Panther or Tiger" myth has been thoroughly debunked. Shermans deployed in groups, so there were almost always three, four, five, or more Shermans to any German tank. But nobody goes around saying "it took five Shermans to take out a Pz III".
@@jaydw6850 Because just about everything in the military, especially in the allied/western military, is about squadwork. One person, tank, or plane on it's own is a target, a group is a threat. Reject wehreabooism, embrace facts.
@@jaydw6850 You make it sound like they were meeting at noon for an organised dual. There were basically 25 Shermans made for every 1 Tiger so they probably always got outnumbered for that reason as well as simple combined arms doctrine.
Yes finally another episode! I love these. Could you please make David Fletcher list his Top 5 tanks? Or James May would be an interesting person to hear talk about his favourite tanks.
Would love to see a James May top 5. Of course knowing May, the video would end up being 30 minutes long (not complaining, mind you, just pointing out)
Nice to see Chris Barrie on here. I'd have four of his top five in my top five minus the Scorpion, which I'd replace with Mk II Matilda. Centurion is my favourite too. Great video.
Space Corp Directive 404? No member of the Space corp shall pilot Star Bug while eating a Christmas turkey? I have to say sir it's a good reminder of an important directive this close to turkey season but I'm not sure of its relevance to this situation.
He makes it much more interesting as he sounds like he got in character and is playing Rimmer from Red Dwarf in this video. If they called this Arnold Rimmer ¦ Top 5 Tanks it may have gotten more views
Even in 2017 they're still in the belief that 5 M4 were "needed" to take on a Panther or Tiger? 2015 The Chieftain had a talk about American Armor myths at the Bovington Tank Museum smh
Wittmans credit for all those vehicles single handedly is widely dismissed as Nazi propaganda. His squadron was with him. Love Chris Barrie though. Great choices.
Chris Barrie should narrate everything. He should, however, also do a little fact checking about needing five M4s to take out a Panther or Tiger. This was only because the M4 operated in platoons of five so they would also need five to take out a Pz. I /shrug
Have good justification for your picks. I think that the scorpion was used very successfully in the Falkland Islands War, where its ability to handle the difficult terrain made is extremely useful.
And he doesn’t laugh at everything. I love Jingles, but he really needs to stop laughing at his own jokes. Also, Jingles has an excuse for not being smarter. He’s an old navy man, not a historian.
Can't disagree about Centurian's inclusion and victory podium .it has the quintessential appearance of a tank, by which all others are judged in my opinion.
Arnold Rimmer *NOT* blathering on about Napoleon.......bloody hard to get my head around, that XD On a serious note thanks to Chris and the Tank Museum for this really entertaining Top 5. Chris Barrie never disappoints. Oh, and I couldn't agree more about number 1.....long live the Atomic Tank :D
i wonder when this myth will finaly die... it took between 4-5 shermans to knock out a panther or tiger because that was the regular platoon size the us army had their tanks operating in. thats all.
that means 4-5 shermans were killed by each tiger before it was knocked out. it has nothing to do with the operational numbers because that would imply tigers fought alone which they didn’t
if you mean shermans after cannon upgrade then yes, the 5:1 ratio isnt accurate, a sherman 76mm could take out a tiger pretty easily but at the beginning that 75mm gun couldnt scratch tiger frontally and from the side it needed to be pretty close, so 5:1 seems ok
@@etyl2494 it doesn't matter if it's Sherman vs maus or Sherman vs ww1 ft it is all was 5:1 ratio because 5 tanks makes a platoon. A platoon is the smallest unit of tanks. So you always seen 5 or more because you never seen smaller than a platoon.
The "Atomic Tank" not only survived the blast, it was driven away for repairs, put back into servive, served and was damaged in Viet Nam, put back in service, and is now on displsy at Robertson Barracks, Palmerston, NT, Australia. Apparently this was the only tank to have bedn used in such tests then gone on to serve in combat.
@@harmdallmeyer6449 appreciate the reply 👍 although I think both HL230 and HL210 were V12 petrol engines, unless I am mistaken: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maybach_HL230
Too bad you repeated the 5 to 1 myth about the Sherman. Tiger was good when it wasn’t breaking down. Love the Scorpion. T34 is a great but boring tank. Of course the T34 didn’t fair so well against Shermans in Korea. Hard to say anything bad about Centurion except maybe a little slow for an MBT. Still a great long lived tank!
Yeah, it's one of the weirdest myths. If one gun couldn't get through, how were 5 supposed to. I recently heard a possible explanation for it being that 5 was the standard Platoon size. This means 5 Shermans were sent out for every Job, even taking out a machine-gun nest.
Better get those Skutters to re-paint it! Trouble is there are many versions of Military Grey, and Skutters can be unreliable with picking paint tones.
As a Young Teenager having just Learnt to Drive, I Zipped past 5 or 6 of these on their Transporters. Travelling towards London from Essex. They were Enormous, Stunning infact. I was Driving in a Mini. So most things looked bleeding Enormous. But well it made an impression..!! But Thx Chris for your P.O.V. I only ever got to Sit inside a Sherman (a Massive treat @ around 10yrs old.) but it sounds like you got a Few more Options..!! Great Video Thx. Kim in Oz..!! 😎
I agree with all of them (though the Scorpion seems a bit of a reach. But his reasoning makes sense to me). Now let's get Craig Charles Top 5. Yes...I doubt he knows what a Chieftain is. But I would still like to hear his thoughts. He is smart, funny and I LOVED how he hosted Robot Wars. He deserves a shot. ☮
"Took" 5 Shermans to overcome a Tiger or Panther is a bit of a myth. It is not like there are a lot of records of failed 4 on 1's. The British 17 pounder was only for the Fireflies. The standard upgrade was to a 76 mm gun, and the upgraded ammo fired from that could pen a Tiger frontally without too much problem. The Tiger was great early war, but end war, its lousy fuel efficiency was a real problem. And it did not take a Tiger to pick off that armoured column. Good list, though!
3:40 He was not a Leutnant. Besides that this was (and is) an army rank, in Wittmanns case he would be called an Untersturm- or Obersturmführer (2nd and 1st lieutenant respectively), but at the time of the Villers-Bocage action he was Hauptsturmführer which is the SS equivalent of captain.
Aluminium armoured...same thing as saying not armoured. Just needed an excuse to make a quick vehicle, and couldn't really say that crew was barely protected from rifle-caliber weapons nevermind anything bigger :D I believe M3 Bradley also has aluminium "armour", and it's not exactly known for it's ability to withstand any kind of damage.
His "5 Shermans to kill a Panther or Tiger" is quite wrong. This falsehood came up because the typical tank unit had 5 tanks. No one says "Oh they only have one Panther so we'll bring only 3 tanks". Fair fights are for suckers so you bring all your guys. It's also important to note the Tiger was a very rare tank with only 1347 buit during the whole war. Honestly it's quite sad how mislead people are about the Sherman.
Chris Barrie is extremely knowledgeable. Not far from my house (in Bolton) there is a Centurion tank on an earth mound near to Flensburg Way, Farington Moss, just outside Leyland in Lancashire (south of Preston). Nearby Leyland Motors were involved in their production.
Just found this video, Chris Barrie does excellent color commentary on his favorite tanks, as the son of a tanker he shows feeling for these vehicles he grew up seeing and probably hearing about from his father.
Who is this guy? He has a very good speaking voice, and shows unusual poise and confidence speaking in front of a camera. I think he could probably get into professional broadcasting, or maybe even acting, if he put his mind to it.
Okay okay. It did not take 5 shermans to take out a cat. Sure it made it easy but one Sherman could easily take out a cat. Especially with the upgraded 76 sure the 17 pounder was good and all but not as good as the American guns. Anyway. The myth that 5 shermans were needed to take down a cat stems from the fact that, that's what the American had. The infantry was always backed up by Sherman tanks the most common amount of Shermans to support would be 4 and 5. But yes the tiger was an amazing tank. If it didn't break down after a few hours in combat. T34 better then Sherman??? Hahaha that's a good joke.
These Tank museum top five RU-vid videos are excellent, it's a shame there were not top tens, lol! All the tank museums RU-vid videos are excellent and well worth a watch and then another watch and another. 👍👍👍👊✌️.
as a kid in late 70s my neighbour ,was a Scottish bloke, captain smith in 22nd tank reg.. brought a scorpion and fox carrier into our high school, well onto fields anyway, and we got to climb on it and sit inside.. yours truly accidently rotated turret and knocked several fellow pupils off and onto deck..poops.. tanks were boss then and are still boss now
I am so sorry Chris but as soon as you started all I could think of was Gordon Brittas. You certainly know your stuff, and you get a lot of kudos from other comments but ... "Coliiiiin - bring the Centurion"
This is what's great about these videos, you watch one video on a subject and next thing you know there's Rimmer giving you his insight. Well done sir!
Ugh. Within the opening minute or two the myths about panther being Germany's best and the 5 to 1 m4 needed to take it out were presented. I had hoped the museum would be all too quick to disallow such bad information, but I suppose it is rude to correct the celebrity presenter? Still, this is how myths are allowed to persist. I almost had to shut the video off before the list even started thinking it would continue to be a presentation of bad tropes and fallacies.
It's only a myth that it needed 5 M4 tanks to kill a Tiger or Panther. As a matter of fact a tank squad consists of 5 tanks. So if they are gonna attack, they're all gonna attack. Source: The Chieftain
