Thank you for this series. It has inspired me to do the same with my '65 Strat that I bought in 1971 for £110. I gigged it for about 13 years before retiring it and myself from playing. It has spent the last 35 years in its case in the attic but this week I'm going to bring it down - getting excited about seeing it after all this time.

It's been an absolute pleasure to watch this whole series, I'm kind of sad that it's finished, but to see it in the hands of Chris is just epic. I really enjoyed how the outcome evolved and I think the decision-making along the way was spot on, it's a player, not a wall hanger. So glad you didn't refinish it! I too am looking forward to seeing Chris play this live, once concerts exist again. Although I suspect this guitar will never play Cwmbran Working Mens Club (round the corner from me) ever again! Great work guys, even the wire relicing!

@Jessie Lee if you look at about 22 minutes into the video he take one lead and puts in the salt water and one hooked to the bridge piece. You could probably use a 9 volt battery to do the same. Can you describe what you're using as a transformer, please?

Just a regular 12v transformer - probably from some cheap device that died ages ago. Most folks tend to used PCB etchant to dull nickel, but it has no effect on chrome. The only tricks I know for chrome are muriatic acid and this electronic method. There are several reasons why I prefer the latter - H

I've been following this series since the beginning and it's been very enlightening. I have to say the care and attention to detail you've used in restoring this instrument to a playing condition is admirable. I do have a question I need to ask about something I saw in the last video. You opened the original pot and swabbed it out with acetone, then swabbed it out again with Deoxit 5, did that eliminate the scratchiness? I have a 1980 Fender "STRAT" and the original volume pot has fallen into such a state that when I roll it back a little bit, it scratches, then cuts out the sound completely when I roll it back just a little further. I wonder if I try that trick, will it repair that pot? Did it work for the pot you did that to? I would like to keep the original volume pot in my guitar if possible. Thank you for posting this series. You do great work.
@tonetwinstv2863
@tonetwinstv2863 4 года назад
The acetone was only used for the pot casing and not the electronic contacts. Deoxit 5 was used for those. The best place to start is to squirt the Deoxit into the pot and work it back and forth. Sometimes you'll need 2 or 3 applications. Also be aware that pot scratchiness can sometimes be caused by current from the amp leaking onto the cable. You can eliminate that as a possible cause by placing a buffered pedal between your guitar and amp to see if the scratchiness is lessened or even disappears. But the chances are that it's the pot considering that it's 40 years old.
@harleyhexxe9806
@harleyhexxe9806 4 года назад
@@tonetwinstv2863 I have tried the Deoxit a few times, and no change. I'm certain there is no current leaking into the guitar from the amp, as it acts the same way with any of my amps that I plug into. I will plug in a Fender Level Set Buffer to be sure though. When I purchased this guitar used, it had been stored in a damp basement for some time before I bought it. The candy apple red finish was mottled and blotchy looking. It had to be buffed out with rubbing compound by a Luthier friend of mine. I think I'll have to open the pot and swab it out and try to clean the corrosion from the contacts. I'm reasonably certain that is the cause of it. Hopefully, it can be cleaned up and saved. Thank you for taking the time to reply!
@tonetwinstv2863
@tonetwinstv2863 4 года назад
@@harleyhexxe9806 TBH Harley, it might be better to install a new pot of the same value. It will solve the problem and won't detract from its value.
@harleyhexxe9806
@harleyhexxe9806 4 года назад
@@tonetwinstv2863 Thank you. I may have to do that, but I prefer to avoid it if I can. I'll take a chance by taking it apart and trying to clean it. If it doesn't work, I won't any worse off than I am now. I guess the only real issue is that the knobs are metal and use a set screw. Usually, they end up wobbly on a standard replacement pot shaft.

Actually the fender saddles aren't really reproductions as fender use the same same machine to make then as they did the originals.

Great outro. Am I hearing a bit of David Gilmore there?

Good decison to make it a good playing instrument instead of 'pure vintage'. A guitar is meant to be PLAYED, right? And to those who pays dearly for new guitars that are 'reliced': if you want a guitar to look old and worn, then play it until it IS old and worn?

A nice sentiment, but not really on the cards if the guitar has a poly finish and the player is is in his/her mid 50s. Really... have a think about it?

Why spend on vintage parts? It's not a case queen, it's a player and it's been through a lot. The changed parts and repairs are what they are. If Chris is happy with it... then it's right.

Ah lads, its a player grade axe just put a new scratchplate on the thing and leave the old one in the case, the plastic bits have no bearing the sound truth be known
