The fact that this video is over a decade old now and still hasn't reached a million views shows how much it was ahead of its time, even back then. Phenomenal.
2:46 is just completely insane. He doubles every hit, snare hi hat and kick making it sound like a very short delay is applied. I don't even understand how he does that on the foot without double pedal. I've never seen anyone doing that as perfectly as him.
the idea here that Chris is getting across is instrumental performance equivalent to mixing two different tracks like turntables. having one loop going while arbitrarily playing a counterpoint track over it. it's a very complex way of performing and a tests to the point that the drummer is not the only one that keeps track of time but that every musician is to keep that pulse.
@@tekumsehcru8035 Indeed. But on repeated listening you realise this is musicianship of the very highest level! I’ve been a musician my whole long life, and I find this staggering!
So for those interested, the baseline is from “Licking Stick” by James Brown, played by the mighty Bootsy Collins. Also played by Hank Ballard, on “how you gonna get respect” The more you know! It’s part of a great American jazz-funk tradition
Didn’t you see him sweating? i would too stay locked in for the sake of the entire performance, Chris is time traveling like never before, its just not safe to step out the Zone 💯
The bass player is Foley!!! Former lead bassist with THEE Miles Davis from 1987 - 1991. And his metronome is in head!!! Chris could not lose him no matter how hard he tried!!!
Man I'm 14 years late but later that than never, this was pure golden mastership. The bass player holding it down was a damn rock, he wasn't budging on that lock in. Would love to see this get reperformed
Chris Dave plays things that no one else plays at the speed he plays them. He's not the fastest drummer, but he is the most interesting drummer at incredibly fast speeds.
All music has a beginning, middle and end. That is form or structure. Free jazz can work exactly like it does here. I say free especially because of the way that Chris and Zhenya are playing - but they have roles. Chris is the leader who goes back and forth between playing with Zhenya or Foley or improvising when he wants to. Foley is taking the traditional bassist role (holding the time and the groove) and Zhenya plays the melodies and improvises at Chris' discretion. Love this vid.
For some reason I can't reply the relevant people but this is in response to 2CProductionsZAR's comment. I think the point this is the tension created by Chris and Zhenya playing against the bass player's groove. He grooves it so hard and stays solid the whole time they are playing this whack rhythm across it and when it comes back its just the most kick ass thing. They could just groove on the same thing but I think it would be less exciting. That's what I think anyway.
This is a great demonstration that a bass player can be a excellent time keeper. Sometimes the drummer can go off and do whatever he wants to. If the bass player is solid in what he knows to be the time signature. he can keep the time regardless of what is happening.
Its like Roger Daltrey said of the Who "what people have to understand is that Pete is the Drummer, Entwistle is the lead guitarist and Keith, well he is a 100 piece orchestra" I'll give you a clue in this video, the drummer is the guy with 4 strings :)
Man, this is still sounding as good as when I first heard it! The sax player is perfect for this concept. And @phatcurtis, I think that's a good way to explain it, but when you think of Chris as the drummer it's way more interesting... either way that's a good explaination.
Because he’s a genius. And a modest one at that! I keep coming back to this year on year to remind me how far I have to go as a musician! Oh how I wish I was there, to see this!
Do you know how hard it is to do what Foley is doing? I mean, seriously. This group makes itself look really good. Chris is going to be Chris. But the other cats are awesome. The way Chris locks with the saxophonist on the melody is pretty insane.
finally identified the bass line - it's "Lickin Stick" by James Brown. EDIT: Darn - should have read the comments - looks like multiple people found out before me. but i heard Licking Stick on the radio randomly and was like "Wait a minute!" and then spend the next hour thinking about where i know that bassline from. and then it clicked :)
