He has said in other interviews that he's surprised and really pleased that people are focusing on his other works. And it's nice that she focused on the new first and didn't get in to DW for quite a while (even if DW is most of my reason for watching). I learned about so much new stuff that I wanna check out now because the panel wasn't Who only.

I think there's an interesting angle to Eccleston not growing up with the show before he played the Doctor. He was focusing on how to create and play a certain character from a particular perspective (a lonely traveller, as he essentially describes) rather than potentially falling into the danger of parodying what had come before. Given that the show was being reinvented at the time, that may be been a benefit in disguise. I love all of the new Doctors, but I think Eccleston is one of the best and most underrated. His Doctor is certainly (in my opinion) one of the most unique iterations of the character ever created, I would have loved to see him alongside Tennant and Smith in the 50th with the level of quality writing to which the show had developed by that point.

This has been one of the best panel interviews I’ve ever seen. I’m from the north of England to, and I’ve always admired Christopher Ecclestone. He’s a great actor. I’m shocked that he was treated in such a way and being black listed. Well not by this fan because even after leaving doctor who I always looked forward to seeing what role he’d be playing next.

Eccleston is one of the my favorite Doctors of the new era, and it always saddens me that we've never seen him on screen again, but I am SO happy that he's finally in a better place mentally, and I would never wish for him to go back to any role that might remind him of the terrible times he's been through.
@Katherine_The_Okay

@Kristien Robert Harland Bell-Wadge Oh, he's an amazing actor with such a wide scope. Being an American, I'd never seen him before Doctor Who, and I was so thrilled to discover him. I've really enjoyed his other works since and hope he has a long and successful career. I'll always miss him as the Doctor, and I'm grateful that the role brought him to my attention (and probably to the attention of quite a few non-British nerds, geeks, and dorks just like myself). For that alone, I'm grateful to the Ninth Doctor. He was wonderful in the role, playing the Doctor as an individual who was clearly not human and (something close to my heart) he gave such a nuanced and sensitive portrayal of PTSD (probably the one thing I have in common with the Ninth Doctor lol). My heart went out to him seeing that, and it's what made me seek out his other work. Mr Eccelston made me fall in love with Nine and, in turn, Nine made me fall in love with Mr Eccleston. It's probably a uniquely American viewpoint to have on him and that role. I will always love Mr Eccleston in all his roles, but Nine will always hold a special place in my heart. Although I'm very eager to see if I can get my hands on that version of Antigone he mentioned. I love Sophocles.

10:00 He says Tennent knew it was much a bigger part than just a character, but that's only because his perfomance set the foundation for the whole new series. No one knew if the new series would work at the time when they were filming, people only begin to see its potential when they saw the fantastic first season. He needs to stop (jokingly) saying no one liked his perfomance or audiences wants David's doctor more than his :'(
@lwaves
@lwaves 4 года назад
While I agree that he should stop joking about and putting down his performance, that's not the reason Tennant knew the part was more than the character. As Ecclescake said, he didn't grow up with the show, he wasn't part of the fandom, so to him it was just another character in another job that just happened to have existed in an earlier time. Whilst the success of his season certainly played it's part when Tennant took over, Tennant also had the knowledge of being part of the fandom since a very early age. He knew the expectations that came with that role, which Ecclescake didn't. That's what he's referring to, something that began long before the relaunch was ever a thing. :-)

Pity that you put doctor Who above the health of the human being. He was not entitled to tell you his mental health issues. I bet if he had cancer or it was David Tennant then you'd have sympathy. More people die of the complications of anorexia than any other mental illness, complications such as heart attacks or suicide. If you heard on the news that he had committed suicide a few years ago, would you still think Doctor Who is more important than the health and wellbeing of the actors?

As a British fan, you can't deny his honesty re; the UK, the press, his own personal private drama, hard upbringing etc. When it comes to Doctor Who, those he worked for and his sudden untimely exit he immediately becomes very uncomfortable, even now. There's still some pain there but he clearly doesn't want to bring up those 'unfortunate circumstances' anymore. He has had his go running down corridors yes but he'll always be the 9th Doctor - the one who truly regenerated for real and made the TARDIS sing again for a new generation.

Great hour there with a fine actor and my favourite of the Doctor Who revamp. Interesting too how he talks about the attitude in the UK, never talking about the positives, always focusing on the negative, abusing him for leaving the show, when he had his reasons. He also seems to love it over there and I can't blame him. I've always wanted to go to New York, one of those cities I want to visit, but money has always stopped me. Yeah, there are some seasons I consider generally good (series 8) and some I remember for certain episodes (series 11, don't at me!), but to me series 1 had both. Not a single episode I'd skip on a rewatch. That's quality. That's Eccleston. That's Piper. Davies, Moffat, everybody. Or maybe that's nostalgia, I don't know!

I haven't forgotten that. 2018 was a painful reminder of how far the series has fallen.

I don't know if it is considered a classic but I love Father's Day. Terrific episode imho.

I love the fact that Eccleston knows the year of the 100th anniversary. I think I always assumed he didn't know much about the show.

Love it. He's so funny and real. It's sort of sad to realize that bc of RTD coming back and dominating the 60th there is little to no chance of Chris coming back any time soon. I think under another showrunner he might've considered a return to the screen next year.
