This is one for all you F1 fans out there! As an introduction for its arrival on Private Sales by Collecting Cars, Chris Harris dives into the archives with former Head of Williams Heritage, Jonathan Williams, to discuss the history of the grand prix winning 1990 Williams-Renault FW13B Formula 1 car.
This car is now available on Private Sales by Collecting Cars: collectingcars.com/for-sale/1...
With a striking design that any aesthete can appreciate, the FW13/13B model is a particularly notable racer from Williams’ history, claiming three Grand Prix wins across the 1989 and 1990 seasons. That achievement is all the more impressive considering the dominance of Senna and Prost over those two years; between them winning 21 of the 32 races.
Chassis FW13B-08 is arguably the most impressive of all, securing not only pole position in qualifying, but taking its driver to outright victory at the Hungaroring in 1990, leading from start to finish.
Finding a car that has spent 25 years in its team’s private collection is unusual, but another factor that makes this chassis especially rare is that it retains the original Renault RS2 3.5-litre V10. Most of these powertrains were scrapped in period, so it is remarkable to find a car still running its correct and fully functional ‘works’ engine.

The thing about that Mansell story that went untold - the first time Nigel got in the car and went around the track, he immediately came into the pits and said "go to the truck and get me the softest springs you've got". After they were fitted, Nige went two seconds quicker than the car had ever gone around that circuit. That's why Patrick felt they'd wasted 1990 - they'd (at Boutsen's behest) gone completely in the wrong direction in terms of car setup.

That's right, although Head has also stated 3 seconds! Having both Boutsen and Patrese was a mistake - although I rated the latter - and I'm somewhat surprised that Renault didn't apply pressure to get an out and out Number 1, though I believe Williams did try. Boutsen was never top draw and was only really at Williams by default.

Patrick head said it was the anti roll bar, boutsen had been used to a really stiff anti roll bar, fitting a softer one then setting the car up around that he said if nigel was in the car in 1990 hed have been within touching distance of the championship, probably second but giving Senna a run for his money closer than Prost did in the Ferrari. He also Reckoned Nigel would have been even more dominant in the 93 car than in 92, as Prost struggled with the active suspension which was most advantageous to the aggressive drivers like Mansell and Senna, not the smooth drivers like Prost.

I've been a Williams support since back when Alan Jones was driving. I was obsessed with Williams. I even wrote a letter to them asking about the best way to become and engineer. I got a lovely letter back from one of their engineers telling my the path way. Unfortunately at the time, I need a job and ended up as a draughtsman for a formwork company that was a US subsidiary. As I spent quite a few years in the US, I knew imperial and metric, so I got the job. I used to ride motorcycles and I bought an Arai lid at the motorcycle show for a steal and then sent it to Mike Fairholme (sp) to paint it as Mansell's replica. I was so pissed off when Mansell went to Ferrari. Alas these days, we're lucky to get a few points. I'm also pissed as Newey for jumping ship to the team that started him off.
