In this video I show you the 9 fountain pens and inks I'll be writing with for May. We look at the pens, do a writing sample and check out the ink tiles for each one. I'll return mid month with a Progress Report as to how these combinations worked out!
Discussion topics at the end (in the library) included: spring weather, decluttering, cat update and discussion (just a preview of my many thoughts) about Fountain Pen Burnout ... in response to my watching Pen Boy Roy's video + subsequent response videos. I expect to make a separate video myself to talk about my experience with pen hobby burn out.
here is Pen Boy Roy's Video/Podcast on Fountain Pen Burnout:
• Episode 191: Fountain ...
Wendi Sue's channel (Fountain Pen News) where I learned about the Moonman Mini Purple Swirl:
/ @fountainpennews
Here are the pens and inks talked about and links to the videos I talked about:
1. Schneider Ray M Boysenberry with Conklin Dusy Rose (ink sample from pen friend CS)
2. Online Ergonomic Fluffy Cats M with Sailor Ink Studio 343 (ink sample from pen friend CS)
3. Pelikan Twist Silver M with Diamine Classic Green (ink sample from pen friend FD)
4. Benu Euphoria Pink Guava B (pen from anonymous pen friend/viewer) with Diamine Deep Magenta (purchased with gift card from Appleboom from anonymous penafactor last year)
5. Lamy Al-Star Ocean Blue B (pen from pen friend MS) with Lamy Turquoise
6. Hongdian N23 Year of the Rabbit Black and Gold Blade nib with Diamine Ochre (ink may have darkened I'm at the end of the 30 ml bottle)
7. Lamy 2000 B with Rober Oster Opal Grey
8. TWSBI Diamond 580-ALR Purple 1.1 (pen from pen friend AW) with Pelikan 4001 Violet
9. Moonman Mini Purple Swirl B Opus nib with Monteverde Purple Reign
Thank you so much for watching!

As someone who is currently navigating my way through recovering from severe burnout related to work (interestingly enough, teaching), fountain pens are part of my therapy. Knowing that you've experienced work-related burnout, I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts on burnout as it relates to fountain pens. I don't want my therapy to end up like my job did! (And thanks for always keeping it real. You're one of my favorite fountain pen RU-vidrs because you're so relatable.)

Hi @christadicken296 -- at first I thought there was no way I could consider hobby burn out real "burnout" since I remember the seriousness when I experienced burnout as a pre-school teacher and then as a caregiver for my in-laws. But I have some thoughts now as to why it happened within the hobby. It is taking me longer than I thought to be "ready" to make the video but I'm still planning to. Thanks for the lovely comment and thank you for being here!

Thank you for the mention and I would love to hear your perspective on burnout! From people I have spoken to, we are not alone! Also, I love your currently inked videos. I jump on them when I see it go live!

Hi Karyna! I'm looking forward to doing a video on Burnout. The whole topic interests me so much how burnout managed to creep into my hobby ... I was certainly familiar with it from past work situations!

It's a hobby, and people--including creators --get into trouble with acquisition. I don't understand huge collections of modern pens and ink. These are tools, and I think a lot of fp people--particularly creators--get sucked into fomo for a new color of a pen they already have. Indeed, I considered starting a blog with the intention of possibly expanding to a channel, but I don't want to buy the pens necessary to establish myself to the point where manufacturers and retailers would send me items for review, so I abandoned that idea. You use your pens more than many creators, which is wonderful, and imo, the way it should be!

Hi @jacobus57 -- I myself enjoy a blog even if it has just a few pictures ... I find some of the fountain pen blogs where they talk about their pen experiences in a broader general way really helpful. I hear you on not wanting to have to do all the acquiring .... ! I find I really want to be independent and so far my pens I've either bought or they've been gifted to me by pen friends and viewers some anonymously. I definitely have run into FOMO over the new TWSBI colors but I've tamed it a lot. I know it makes absolutely no sense even the 20 I have of the TWSBI Ecos seems so excessive. Yet I love them I just would not and will not continue at that rate of acquiring. :)

Oh Chris! My heart felt so happy when I saw the purple Wancai in your lineup! Hooray! Thank you for the shout out. It feels so special that I inspired you in some way after all of the inspiration you've given me.

Hi Wendi-Sue I was so excited when I found the little pen on Amazon! Sometimes I have to "hear" about something several times and I was sitting here thinking ... "I wonder how many people told me there was a purple mini and I just didn't clue in fully..." lol. Sometimes SEEING something is what really makes it real and when I saw yours I was like a kid I was so excited. :)

I will have to listen to Roy’s video as I feel like I’m in a rut pen wise. Hopefully a month of shimmer and sheen inks will shake it!

Interesting line up this month Chris. The Lamy Turquoise is one of their standard inks , I have been using it for ages. Medium flow and very reliable 😊. All the best .

Hi @anneh3185 - oh I'm glad to hear this!!!!! I love when an ink or pen is standard. It gives me a better chance of being able to try it when my pen allowance allows. LOL

That is such a nice lineup of pens & ink for the coming month of May. Of all the pens I have a version of 5 of your picks (I have the same Twist in a different nib). A couple of new acquisitions for me - I had wanted a Eureka pen for some time, but they are almost always sold out. Well a week or so ago I happened to check their web site and they had their Dodecagon in PEEK available so I ordered it and it is an amazing writing pen. The other pen I ordered from Peyton Street pens was a Lotus Wave with a 1.1 mm stub that arrived today. The pen is in Teal Ebonite and the Emerald of Chivor ink is a pretty good match for it.

1. Interesting that two tiles with the same ink look so different. I find ink colors so varying that I tossed out my ink swatch book. Each time I want to (re)use an ink I test it afresh on the exact paper I want to use it on. 2. My interminable project using beginner pens is finally approaching completion. Just 4 more drawings (of 28). Four of the pens are going into the Retired box, and the eight keepers go in the drawer till at least the end of the year. 3. Regarding burnout. I still and always will draw every day, the way you write every day. Mostly with fountain pens. But I've recently reached three endpoints that have me burned out on the more hobbiest and collector elements of pens. First, I have finalised my color palette to the De Atramentis Artist Ink line of about 20 inks. I own most of them, and may pick up the rest eventually, but I no longer shop for new inks. Only a little idle curiosity remains. Second, I bought my grail pen, and now any more pens suddenly seem pointless. There remain a handful of pens I kind of want of specific colors I may pick up as I find the need, but again though I still have curiosity, I no longer shop for pens, not even recreationally. And, finally, I know what paper I want. Consequently, many fountain pen youtube videos no longer interest me. I still watch those made by people who now feel like friends, but not in order to learn about the latest product. And I still learn about drawing with pens from a handful of youtuber art teachers (most specifically right now Stephen_Inks and @mkompan). I am GREATLY relieved not to feel compelled to keep grazing, and I am happy to have met so many nice people. 4. Is turquoise the most beautiful color? [yes]

Hi Ichiro -- thank you for writing your thoughts about burnout and pen hobby changes! I feel myself reaching end points with pens also and long ago my ink over consumption caught up with me ... making me not really want to for instance see another blue ink sample as long as I lived. :) I want that peace you spoke of of not feeling compelled to graze on pens and pen related "stuff". LOL

I like that opal grey. I have Lexington grey but really only use it for drawing. And of course the Lamy Turquoise is my favorite. I noticed my inks are either red, brown or blues. And my plan is to not buy any ink unless I finish a bottle! So far I’ve kept up with that promise but I think it has more to do with not having much space for storage and I’m kinda Zen when it comes to stuff! Thanks Chris! Happy May writing!

Diamine Ochre is a strange ink. I got a bottle a year or so ago after seeing it in a lot of videos. The swab I did seemed to match what I had seen in photos and video, but every time I ink it up it writes much lighter. Also, I believe your Twsbi is the 580 ALR Purple.
@ChrisSaenz13
@ChrisSaenz13 4 месяца назад
Hi David -- oh wow that's amazing - your Diamine Ochre writing lighter. Mine seems to have maybe settled and gotten darker ... I could have been guilty of not swirling the ink around when there was more in the bottle too.
