I'm actually even more impressed with almost every track being automated ;)

That's the only way to put dynamics back in the mix after the kinds of compression we add nowadays. But it's the only real way to maintain a balance whilst adding emphasis to certain sections of the song. It's cool though isn't it.

I applaud this video for bringing reverb pre-delay methods to the forefront - it's certainly a great tool to have and use - but this really isn't anything new... engineers have been using tempo-related pre-delays on reverbs for years... I learned about it back in the 80's, from my instructor ( who had been an engineer at Caribou Ranch in the late 70's and early 80's) so obviously this method was around for quite awhile before that...or at least as long as the reverb units that allowed for that parameter to be tweaked. I still use tempo-dependent pre delay(s) on reverb all the time. 150 ms may seem like a very long pre-delay for those who've never used it, but it's not all that uncommon... it all depends on the song, and the sound that you want to achieve.

It's clean, clear....cuts through. No muddiness....with that pre-delay set like that....it acts like a "ducking-effect" of sorts.

I've been doing pre delays like that for years! Actually I time them....so a track at 120 is a 125ms pre delay. It essentially moves the reverb back so that the initial transient can come through without being surrounded by reverb..then the tail becomes covered. I also do this with my drums and guitars. For drums, if you want a tighter sound but following the principle, try 50ms @ 120bpm, tighter still - 25ms This works equally well with a delay. I do it all the time with sound toys primal tap. It works really great as you have the bpm locked. Although a lot of times its best to find the bpm, lock it down, then play with shifting it around somewhere between 2-5ms so it blends well, otherwise it can disappear altogether - same as with delays. Cheers folks! Can't wait for the 1176 blue!

I remember reading years ago, that Whitney Houston mix engineer would use 125ms pre delay on her voice a majority of the time. I've use this a lot and it does just that...gives the vox that space before you hear the verb.

+R & J Recording Studio Mendoza Yup, totally! Space without that 'verby' sound.

Well the tempo of the session seems to be around 85-90bpm, so a 152ms pre-delay is almost a 16th note (170ms -ish) so like a slap-verb 60/bpm = 1/4 note in ms, bpm/60 = frequency in hz.

+Faraz Abtahi Thanks, and yes it's a 'slap back' verb, very cool because it's so effective.

+SlateTV As we all know, slap-back (or ADT) puts things in the immediacy i.e. up-front. So thats essentially using a reverb to add lushness while bringing the vocal out into the spotlight. Its like a mushy delay - watch the film Amadeus and he talks of lots of people singing and its clear, a couple of people talking and its a mess, so this is a trick to break up the phonemes and let the words stand out while adding tonal colour.

145 msecs is roughly the 15ips tape delay we ALL used in front of EMT plates... it's not at all unusual actually... I almost always do it.
@SlateDigitalTV

+weedywet Thanks weedy! Many experienced old school engineers know of long pre-delayed verbs but it's certainly unique to a lot of people to use such a long pre-delay on a digital reverb to get out of the way of the vocal.

+rwinter069 it really works great to add depth without sounding too obvious.

I love the Lexicon LX480, it's a beautiful sounding reverb...but I can not find a SINGLE tutorial on how to properly use it...not even from Relab. A short tutorial on how to use the parameters of this reverb would be awesome and much appreciated.

Honestly this would sound incredible with like a hard pitch corrected backing dub summed into the reverb as well.

It's not a secret when you shout in a massive empty hall, it takes long before the sound hits back at you, almost like an echo

Hey Steven, please make this video accessible to your paid members. I know you must have your reasons for not offering it anymore (plugins not up to date?) but we'd love to see it. Thanks.

Work to the tempo of the track for pre-delays, delays and reverbs. Decide what you want in beats 1/4 note, 1/16 etc. and do the math.

i think Steven knows this! what is unusual is the 152ms. usually its between 10 - 20ms.
@SlateDigitalTV
@SlateDigitalTV 8 лет назад
+Mark Lodge Exactly! We see lots of 10-20ms predelays on vocal verbs but using 152ms, essentially making it a slap back verb, was pretty cool! And it works!

yeah dude how have you been click baited? This incredible technique will allow your lead vocals to be deep in the mix without the reverb being overly noticeable. So it is clear, this is Chris's actual mix that he did, it is his technique.
