Chris Paul - Midrange Mastery

Chris Paul’s in-between game might be the best in the NBA. Monster defense, precision passing, range, the ability to get to anywhere he wants on the floor AND a pristine pull-up jumper make him the most complete point guard we have in today’s league.
Chris’ creativity causes chaos for defenses. What’s even more terrifying is he seems effortlessly effective everywhere on the court. He’s mastered the midrange. Why in an age where everything should either be a three pointer or a shot in the paint would Paul’s pull-up be valued? Simply put, a three pointer is far and the paint is normally packed, so when you have the playmaking proficiency to pick your spots, a lot of the time, it’s easier to get a shot when defenses chase you off the perimeter and sag to protect the interior. Everyone knows a Chris Paul - insert anyone here pick and roll is a nightmare for the other team. It’s pick your poison. You don’t want to be slaughtered by surgical passes. You certainly don’t want one an all-time great shot creator getting in close. You’ll live with a contested two, but that’s where CP will absolutely burn you. He’s marvelous at this shot and, while it’s the shot you’d rather give up, his efficiency will be your downfall. CP3 is so great that he’ll even beat you with the shot you want him to take.
The whole point of this is to say; to all the young players out there, work on that in-between game. It could be the thing that will make you special. If you work on everything, you ensure you have no weaknesses. Having no weaknesses can make up for a great deal of things, even a diminutive stature (by NBA standards). Chris is living proof.
Here's the CP defense video I made a little while back: • Chris Paul - Lockdown II

Chris Paul has the most consistent midrange pull-up jumper game in the nba, it is scary to guard especially with his handle.

He has such a perfect "sway" on his shot: the motion when he kicks out his legs forward and lands in front of his jump point to more efficiently harness the jump-energy on his shot. I also love all the little non-flashy dribble moves he uses to get space to shoot. His mid-range skill fits so perfectly in their offense. Someone might say, well he would be better off turning a bunch of these into 3s, since those are generally more Points Per Shot. But then he would he messing up the perimeter spacing of the spot-up shooting role players and they would get less opportunities. By being in the mid-range area, he leaves room for perimeter teammates to be open at the three point line and post teammates to be close to the basket for lay-ups. And, by forcing defenders to stay near him in that area to close out on his shots, he creates more drive and cutting opportunities for himself and teammates.

Before you guys ask, here's a list of the videos I'm currently working on. They may not necessarily come out in any particular order, but when they're ready, they'll be up (I'm working on more than just these, but these are probably the ones closest to ready). Tony Allen, Shumpert, Iguodala, John Wall & Klay Thompson defense videos Tristan Thompson rebounds (probably just offensive rebounds) LeBron, Boris Diaw, Draymond & Kyrie passing reels Atlanta, Chicago & San Antonio ball movement Cousins, Blake Griffin, Kyrie & Goran Dragic videos (unspecified because I'm still trying to figure them out) Don't worry, I'm still working on the Kawhi playoff defense video, but I'm rewatching the 2014 Finals and that's proven no small task, so it'll be a little before that's ready.

Evin Gualberto Goran Dragic finishing at the rim and on the break would be nice. Seems to be his specialty for a point guard. Maybe Danny Green transition defense, too. Seems to stop an inordinate number of fast breaks by faster or stronger players single-handedly.

What I love most about his midrange jumper is how fundamentally sound his shot is. Straight up. Beautiful motion. No athletic show-off nonsense. Separation. Straight up.

How long does it take to make a video like this?
@EvinGualberto
@EvinGualberto 9 лет назад
Hard to say because it's a lot about finding clips to use. So you see that I use a lot of GD & Dawk Ins vids. After I find what I'm looking for, I edit it down and compile. Sorry if that didn't answer your question, but my process is typically, see a video, basically strip it down for parts and then see the parts fit into later on.
