Deja vu - Chris Bullock watching Chris Potter's solo in amazement in this video and Shaun Martin going crazy over Cory Henry's solo in the original video for Lingus.
@@SidLaw500 Not even close. Chirs Potter has a 5000 page catalogue of amazing solo's, most of them far surpassing what was performed here. Check out some of his work on the Aziza album, his Imaginary Cities album, the entirety of Rumples and Follow The Red Line, his other work with Dave Holland like Prime Directive, Keys to the Kingdom, Illimba. I don't think there any official recordings out there but he did a tour some years ago playing A Love Supreme with Joe Lovano and that shit was mindmelting to the point that this video feels like a breeze.
@@thewafflemancer Btw that was before I really dug deep into Potter! I AGREE with you. I literally believe nobody has listened to him more than I have in the last year. 2 hrs a day average? (On road trips: 8-10hrs a day). I'm not a saxophonist, but I am a serious full-time professional musician with my own vision quest. Listening to Potter is one of my greatest pleasures.
@@SidLaw500 oh hell yes. I might still have a bootleg of one of his Love Supreme performances. Should I find the specific hard drive, I'll be sure to send you a link over DM!
I came here from the Cory’s keyboard magic on this tune and this is at least as astonishing if not more so. I was a horn player in high school band and can appreciate this more from personal experience.
I love this video so much. I'm grateful these guys were able to collaborate, but my favorite part, aside from the virtuosity on display, is watching the Snarky Puppy guys' reactions during Potter's solo. Love how they're jamming out just as hard.
I can't believe I've not come across this video until now! I was there that night and the atmosphere was electric. The guy stood next to me spent most of the gig with his hands on his head in disbelief. Just fabulous!
There’s an Irish airline called Aer Lingus. I’m not sure how many metaphors we can generate but I’m sure you see where I’m going with this. Respect to Pilot Potter.
On stage: teacher/master putting on a clinic to a group of students who can't wait to devour everything their ears can possibly absorb. I mean the phrasing is just insane. No wonder Chris has remained relevant all through the years. The second he plays his first note, his tone instantly hits you with an impact so undeniable, you know you're in for a treat! Absolutely awesome!
You know what...I actually prefer the room recording versions of this when you can hear the reverberations, the overtones, the harmonic mess and the crowds excitement. The Drums sounds so tame in this but in the "room recordings" it's sounds INTENSE!
0:40 before starting his solo he gestures for the one. The drummer obliges. He nods in thanks and begins. That is one of my favorite moments in musician communication.
#ChrisPotter Quite simply... the single greatest soloist walking the planet today, performing the icon song of the band led by the single greatest bandleader walking the planet today... Snarky Puppy Founder Michael League :-)
I was there, “magical” doesn’t do it justice, no words do it justice. Thanks so much for posting this so I can relive this incredible piece of jazz history and others can experience it too.
Dang - just studying and replicating Chris's phrases could be my lessons for the next year...oh to be just 10% as good as him...this is one of the most epic sax solos I've ever seen....I love how he summarizes the performance...oh my God...what else can you say? I just transcribed one little phrase he had - the muted tonguing thing and it's just brilliant.
He can really play, sounds solid, love that he plays the blues, you can hear a lot of influences and whatnot in his playing. I love how tight he is rhythmically with everything that he does. Best in the world? No.
I understand but i think it's more than. It's the stuff they both transcribed and learned from previous generation tenor players like coltrane, rollins, henderson etc.
It's pretty clear that Chris doesn't know the song well at all, the ending hits were foreign to him. And it doesn't matter! He's great at all times, just mic his horn and enjoy.
