I'm American, and I only discovered this song 8 years ago. I love Christmas music, and I immediately thought, "Where had this song been all my life?" "Driving Home For Christmas" is simply magic.

I’m not sure, whether RU-vid let this message passing through but still... For many years, people around the world argue in which country your music is loved and appreciated the most. Well, someone could argue endlessly, but I know for sure that in Russia you are treated most specially. A unique voice, melody, sincerity, attitude to listeners, your humanity and modesty are at the highest level. Together with my spouse we were at your great concert in St. Petersburg 4 years ago, it made an indelible impression on us. You know, Driving Home for Christmas is a Russian song. Because it's connected to the road. Our roads are endless. Like a Russian soul. When you go home for Christmas or New Year's Day, your soul sings. My parents are your age, my daughter turns 8 today. I heard this song for the first time this year and loved the instrumental so I looked it up when I got home and played it a few nights, a good buddy of mine was coming back to the province after almost 10 years of not seeing eachother and I told him to play this song on the way there, he now appreciates it too. I first heard this underrated Christmas Song back in December 1992. I don't know why I didn't associate the singer with Chris Rea back then. This Christmas song remained a little known gem in the U.S. Only decades later with the coming of the Internet was I able to locate the song. I learned to my surprise the song came out years before 1992. I was able to purchase the Chris Rea CD with this Christmas song on it. As I wrote, this song should have had much greater playing time in the U.S.

All my life I have loved Christmas music, from the worshipful 'official' carols we sang in church, to all the pop standards from the crooners, etc. But my holiday is not complete without hearing this song. I have loved it since the very first time I heard it many years ago. Chris totally captured what it feels like for all of us separated from family by miles, or the artificial urgencies of career life, or as it was for me when I was serving in the military when my kids were small. There's something about the yearning and hopefulness of this tune that I absolutely love! Thank you Chris Rea for this new classic!
