"Slaying the Dreamer" Buenos Aires 2018 is quite heavy too. Great song and performance. "Dead Boy's Poem" Buenos Aires is sad but beautiful. Many fans seem to think this is one of the best Nightwish songs, can't blame them. If you want to see the Argentinian crowd at it's best, "craziest", then react to "I Want My Tears Back" Buenos Aires (2019 says the title of the video, but it was in 2018). The audience was about to steel the whole show.
This song was part of the Decades Tour celebrating 20years of the bands existence, they showcased songs from each album that they had released up to that point, with Floor (and Marco in this song ) covering the original versions. In this song Marco plays the Devil and Floor the Ocean(or mermaid) so yes there is a conversation during the song between the two.
Story? Yes, absolutely, Devil and the Mermaid - the lyrics will make it clearer, no spoilers :-) Nightwish songs have a story / meaning, see the following quotes regarding the songwriting process: "Tuomas Holopainen: It always starts with a burning desire to tell a story, or to vent out steam. Something bugs me, or inspires me. Affects me so deeply that I feel the need to translate it into music ... I always see it [song] as a short movie. Each song is like a soundtrack for that movie in my head. If the story would be a movie, how would the soundtrack sound like? ... Then it's a matter of finding the right vibe - the right lyrics and instrumentation to tell that story. It can take months to get it just right. Then when I feel I've given it everything I got, I'll present it to the rest of the band and we'll make it even better." - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GQ9PFUZ9uGs.html "The ideas start flying when we get to play the songs. It's then when everybody starts making suggestions. Like what if?... Each [band] member adds their personal touch to the song .. these are the finishing touches that really [help] to bring the songs to life ... small hooks that make the song even more interesting .. in general the [core] structures of the songs don't change that much ... " - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tJF4Twus_08.html
They all killing it - Floor and Markos "dialog" is epic - Tuomas is pushing the keys so fast that he can only use 2 fingers, Kai is a metronom or a machine - Emppu as always give what the music need, and Marko again - even when singing is very busy on the bass providing the guitars rythm part - he's not just a bass player he's a super bassist (and musician) and vocalist. Marko & Floor are fantastic storytellers
Nice Chris....Pup only stayed in background for two minuets, darn. Now a new favorite, gonna happen again you know. Same concert, give " Dead Boys Poem " a listen.
A similar song from Nightwish is "The Pharaoh Sails to Orion" - best live video is imo the "From Wishes to Eternity" version with Tarja ( afaik Floor never performed it). To avoid confusion there is a guest singer in this song. If you enjoyed Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean you might like The Pharaoh Sails to Orion too.
This song is kind of a musical theater style song. Marco plays the devil who is amorously pursuing Floor's mermaid character and is unsuccessful. Kai was sounding like a machine gun on full auto. Great job my friend. Next time! Peace.
I love Nightwish! Another suggestion: Take a listen to "Mors Principium Est - Lost in a Starless Aeon" - You won't regret it ;) The whole album is great, maybe the best 2020, MPE is the most underrated band ever imo.
