John England & The Western Swingers - Gene ´Pappy´ Merritts/Fiddle/Vocals - Chris Scruggs/Steel Guitar - David Spicher/Bass/Vocals -Bryan Owings/Drums @Robert's Western World, Broadway, Nashville - Friday 8. June 2012
Hands down the best performance of Harbor Lights on the steel guitar that I have ever heard, done in the true tradition of classic Hawaiian steel players, such as Jerry Byrd, and that young feller is a true compliment to your playing skills. The harmonics give me goose bumps! I never tire of hearing you play, Chris... more, more, more!!
Jerry Byrd is NOT "rolling over in his grave"! Rather: he's just complimenting Chris Scruggs, for his playing like Jerry did it. Wow... I'm near 92 yrs old, and I first heard Jerry playing Harbor Lights (1950); with the "Harmonicats" band; in a RX shop. And I ate there every day, while in College. So, I always had a 1/4", to play it again. And since I also played the Steel Guitar too; I finally found how; to play that song, like Jerry. So.. Praise Jesus' Holy Name...For Jerry was a dear friend, and may Jesus rest his precious Soul. And thanks Chris Scruggs for playing that one. Because it gave me "Tears of Nostalgia". For, you did a great "Liking" of Jerry. Thanks Jørgen Petersen. P.S. If any wants to hear the JB original; it's on RU-vid...called, "Jerry Byrd - Harbor Lights".
Chris is such a talented steel player and was blessed enough to have Johnny Sibert as a teacher. Johnny was my absolute favorite steel player including Jerry Byrd .Of course Chris has the natural talent or all the instruction in the world would not produce the kind of music we just enjoyed.
@@candlerbennett2155 RU-vid has the original "Jerry Byrd-Harbor Lights"! I used that recording in 1950; to learn how to play Jerry playing; on this 'classic" Song.
Chris is my favorite straight steel player going. Hell, favorite steel of any kind. Taste, tone, chops, perfect intonation whether forward or revers slants. Did I mention TASTE and TONE!? Dayum... makes that Dual Pro sound like God's own guitar.
These are hi-lo, off the SGF: "I just spoke to Chris on Facebook and he says he's using the exact same tunings as Kayton Roberts. C6/A7th and F13th. F13 F D A F G Eb C F C6th+A7 E C A G E C# A A (Low bass)"
All of the background chatter just goes to show.... most people are idiots....talking over this performing is a crime. Chris Scruggs is as good as it gets !!!!
