Elizabeth, after you reacted to this song I was so anxious for Julia to do a reaction! I love that the two of you bring education, along with entertainment and enthusiasm, to your reactions! Julia thank you so much for this one, I have enjoyed it immensely and will watch it numerous times! Hope you got the bug out at the end!
From what I’ve heard Chris actually had a good deal of stage fright, so to help him his wife goes on stage with him as his background singer. That way instead of looking at the crowd he can look at her to maintain focus.
I saw an interview with Chris and his wife and he confirmed, that he did have stage fright and she helped him. he has gotten better with the stage fright though
@@faded2283 he actually performed with two bands. The first is a bluegrass band called the Steeldrivers and the second band was a rock band called the Jompson Brothers. Before these bands he was a professional songwriter, similar to the Brill Building of the 50s and 60s.
That "backup singer" is his wife Morgan Stapleton..and yes he has written countless songs for country artist, but when he redid this one Morgan was adamant that he HAD to sing it himself, he was worried about his stage fright and she told him .."just sing it to me!!"
Best part of that is watching that live performance, JT turning his back to the crowd to look at the band, CS pointing to JT when they were deciding who'd take the next lyric... and of course you get to see Timberlake's Soul and hear Chris's amazing belt at the end with I CANNNT drink you AWAY! On my Staylist.
I'm not the biggest Country Music fan, however, I could listen to Chris Stapleton all day long. This performance is just fantastic. And I love Julia's breakdowns and technical explanations of vocals.... its why I watch so many of her reactions.
This was an exceptional breakdown! I'm going to share this with my brother who's much more likely to understand and utilize your information. I never realized so much knowledge even existed about this subject. Absolutely amazing. Thank you.
Thanks, Julia! I always love to get the education. Even though I'm not a singer myself, it helps me to understand and appreciate what my favorite singers are doing to make me happy!
Honestly you are the first coach reacting to a vid, who made total sense to me. You truly know what you are talking about and as for Chris Stapelton, you’ve analyzed his approach perfectly. Actually I just randomly came across this and only watched it since I wanted to see Chris’s live performance LOL However ended up enjoying your explanations immensely. Well done.
I must admit... Here is a vocal analyst that actually analyzes his vocals.... Many terms I was not aware of until I watched this wonderful woman... Thank you so much for this
As someone who has been singing for quite a few years, with no teaching, and who loves to sing this song, the breakdown of the riff and tips on attacking it were amazing. Thank you
Any time you can catch him live you will find that he is better than studio recordings. He gets energized by the audience and the others in his group(my theory). The fact that he doesn't need technology to enhance his voice or performance is his secret. He is a throwback to the "old timey" performers who just had loads of talent.
Fun to watch different vocalists breakdown this song! All have different parts of Chris that they love! The backup singer is his wife and does an amazing rendition of “you are my sunshine” where Chis sings backup for her! It’s awesome!
@@GunGnome_ Fire Away was written by Chris and Danny Green. Tennessee Whiskey was first recorded by (but not written by) Coe. But why tell us here? We're talking about Fire Away.
There are some great videos of Chris performing this song. I've only seen him once live, and fortunately it was in a smaller venue which allowed for really enjoying his performance.
His mix of twang and soulful, brassy 'cry' tone is truly like no other - living legend! 🙌 Btw thanks also for the explanation of twang - no idea that the 'false' folds were involved in that production.
Love the brreakdown and the music. The points on his great voice, the excellent harmony support from the backing vocalist (loved their interaction including looking at each other to visually synchronize), and the explanations of husk and so on. I would add his tasteful and appropriate guitar playing and solid band completed the picture.
I'd love to hear a reaction to some of Chris's stuff from when he was with The SteelDrivers. It has a more Bluegrass sound to it but it's all amazing. Sticks that Made Thunder, Midnight Tears and Can You Run are some of my favorites.
I would like to recommend you see a live performance of "I Was Wrong", also by Chris Stapleton... unreal. Thanks for another great breakdown. Always awesome! Cheers!
You've said it yourself: Edda James's I'd rather go blind............ but from Joe Bonamassa and Beth Heart Live in Amsterdam. Maybe the best rendition of the song for me. Please consider doing that next
ONLY A PROFESSIONAL SONGWRITER LIKE CHRIS WOULD HAVE THE GUTS TO SET THE WORDS OF A COUNTRY HIT TO THE MUSIC OF A BLUES HIT MAKING A NEW HIT FOR US ALL TO ENJOY!!!!!!! BTW CHRIS'S VERSION OF TENNESSEE WHISKEY HAS JUST BEEN CERTIFIED DIAMOND. PERIOD!!!!!
i love this song, chris has such a powerful voice with effortless ease. you have such an adorable smile btw, you can tell that the music really hits you in the way that only musicians will understand XD
That wasn't a backup singer, that was his wife of many years Morgane. Chris had been in music for many, many years as a song writer, backup singer and guitarist before his wife convinced him to give solo a try. She would go on stage with him to help him get over his stage fright. You can see the love in their eyes throughout the performance. Chris doesn't do regular music videos. His label kept asking so he agreed on some non-negotiable conditions. He would pick the message and write the song. He would have say in the direction and production of the video and that he would not appear in the video singing. A lot of the message is in the video itself and would be better understood without too many pauses. You can always go back after the video to add your analysis. Love your reactions and keep them coming. {Don't know how you haven't discovered Chris Stapleton, live, before now.}
i got to see him[them] live as an opener for guns and roses in nashville and it was awesome. the first time i heard "daddy doesn't pray anymore" i had to collect myself.
Chris is awesome. I crash at his song ´Fire Away´. He made that and even made a video, whcih he normally doesn´t do, to create awareness to mental issues. I would love to see you react to the video version. Protip! don´t wear eye make-up while watching it coz it will run, i promiss. Great reactions, thanks for that.
I swear, Julia is such a treasure! I started on the show just enjoying watching someone talk about something they're passionate about but now I love learning totally random vocal technique stuff that I can never implement as someone who has never sang a single line in the correct pitch. I hope she gets half the joy from doing this as we do watching it!
(Hiccup) 🤪If I took a shot of strawberry wine every time you said 'vocal quality' your strawberry blondness might (er, would) blind me...yes it would, yess it woould! I really enjoyed your breakdown of Chris' delivery elements. Thanks Julia!
Chris and his backup singer have blended serval times, she was pregnant that night with their I think 3rd child.( I think) And yes it was a great night. If you ever get a chance watch the whole show. Austin City Limits.. I grew up on it It’s the Texas version of the Grand Old Oppry.. Ever great Texas music performer has played it one time or the other.
That is Chris stapleton's wife on stage singing with him too Chris did it attribute to Garth Brooks and sang shameless on an award show for Garth and made Garth cry 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Not surprised Julia, yet again another amazing job. I just caught the last 8 minutes as it is only 7 a.m. here. Also, very nice counting. Take care and see you at the next one!
Hard to believe that this man did not consider himself a singer when he started in the industry. Thankfully he did step out behind the mic. Iconic voice!
That’s a killer performance! I’d love to see Julia react to “More of You” from Tiny Desk because you get the full picture of his voice with his just him, Morgane, and his guitar.
Chris Stapleton’s “twang” is both technique and his natural accent - he grew up in Appalachian eastern-Kentucky. (Staffordsville, near to Paintsville, in Johnson County, Kentucky)
The back up singer is Morgan his wife they’ve been married since 2007. They have a handful of children. They have been singing together for a long time.
Certain models of electric guitar are also said to have “twang”. Most typically, the Fender Telecaster is said to have twang, for the same reasons Julia describes here.
Also I am not a singer, but I do love singer reaction videos like this. Every one that I've watched (that was a professional singer at least) all mention what you said about the "Dirty Gliss" have mentioned the forward placement of the breath and the how he pulls back like that. so so cool.
would love to see you react to more country music there are a lot of great vocalistin country that a lot of people in other countries don't get to see because it's more of an American music genre
Julia had me dialed in, as always, with the analysis... but the "bloopers" at the end made me snort laugh quite unexpectedly. Me staying Classy. Thanks for the review. Chris and Morgane's NPR Tiny Desk concert shows how connected they are vocally... she's always looking at him and he's singing to her. But then on Death Row (which I believe was sampled into your transition to the bloopers) he sings alone, which is completely fitting, as a man in a dark cell all alone with just his thoughts.
Holy hell that was an explanation on husk. It got me thinking though about vocal fatigue, is that similar and is there ways to speed up recovery time from it/combat against it before it happens? I'd love an explanation or video on that if possible.
Great analysis. Please react to Alter Bridge - Words Darker Than Their Wings live at the Royal Albert Hall ❤️🙏. Their singer Myles Kennedy is a vocalist that you should definitely check out. He's also the singer of the Slash's (Guns n Roses) solo band. He's one of the greatest rock singers of this generation.
I second that! Myles has an incredibly powerful and clean tone to his voice! He’s spoken in interviews about how working with a bel canto coach helped him develop his technique and keep his voice healthy. The high note at the end of that song is life changing.
Interesting you mention "Rather go blind", there is a Mashup of him singing "Tennessee Whisky" and Angelina Jordan singing "Rather go Blind". It works so well! It is almost at a million views also.
If you liked this one you ought to check out Chris Kläffords version of it, just for comparison ;) Second, since it's christmas time you just HAVE to react to the swedish band Sabatons "Christmas Truce", the song is about the spontaneous christmas truce 1914 during the first year of WWI where the german and british/french soldiers for one day stopped shooting, came out of the trenches and celebrated christmas together. It's a song filled with both beauty and sadness and, imo, one of the best songs to celebrate the Spirit of Christmas released in a long time.
