Fun fact: 99% of movies featuring pirates as the good guys never actually show them doing any piracy. Pirate is just a fancy way of saying 'sea adventurers'. Piracy involved attacking innocent ships carrying goods and stealing all of their shit, often killing or raping them in the process. It wasn't a pretty thing.

Definitely wasn't pretty. No modern hygiene and scurvy all the time. You could probably smell a pirate long before you saw them. Knights were similar, with the Rape and stuff

How do you answer that? Kids, in the west at least, have NO IDEA about the dark parts of pirates. They see the movies and 'people having fun on a big ship in the ocean, having fights, and collecting treasure', and that's it. That's how I'd answer.
