My Mom passed away 21 years ago, and I still cannot get thru an Easter Service without tears, thinking of how many times I sang this beautiful hymn with her growing up in the 52 years that she was with me.
My father was buried on Good Friday April 13, 1979. I went to Easter morning service and as the organ began this hymn the tears began rolling down my face. It still brings tear to my eyes all these years later.
I’m so sorry for your loss, what a great reunion Day we have to look forward to! My father went to be with the Lord on April 13, 6 years ago. God Bless🕊🙏🏼
I post this each year on my Facebook page for all the "newer" friends I've accumulated. Each time I listen to this it brings tears to my eyes. If this is what our praise on earth sounds like -- can you even imagine the praises of the heavenly host around the throne!! Christ is RISEN INDEED!! ALLELUIA!
This simply takes one to the spiritual realm where every problem of life is forgotten. May the Lord continue to use this medium to bring us closer to Himself. Hallelujah Christ is risen indeed.
I couldn't stop myself sending hearts for your comments. When I was a child of 7 years old I walked to the one leading the music and told that I want them to play this hymn. Now I'm 36 and still love this hymn. Love from India 🇮🇳

"Christ the Lord Is Risen Today" Text: Charles Wesley, 1707-1788 Music: Lyra Davidica, 1708 Tune: EASTER HYMN United Methodist Hymnal #302 Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia! Earth and heaven in chorus say, Alleluia! Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia! Sing, ye heavens, and earth reply, Alleluia! Love's redeeming work is done, Alleluia! Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia! Death in vain forbids him rise, Alleluia! Christ has opened paradise, Alleluia! Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia! Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia! Once he died our souls to save, Alleluia! Where's thy victory, boasting grave? Alleluia! Soar we now where Christ has led, Alleluia! Following our exalted Head, Alleluia! Made like him, like him we rise, Alleluia! Ours the cross, the grave, the skies, Alleluia! "Thine Be the Glory" Lyrics: Edmund Louis Budry Music: George Frederick Handel Tune: MACCABEUS United Methodist Hymnal #308 Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son; Endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won. Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, Kept the folded grave-clothes where thy body lay. Thine be the glory, risen conquering Son; Endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won. Lo! Jesus meets thee, risen from the tomb; Lovingly he greets thee, scatters fear and gloom. Let the church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, For our Lord now liveth; death hath lost its sting. Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son; Endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won. No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of life! Life is naught without thee; aid us in our strife. Make us more than conquerors, through thy deathless love; Bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above. Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son; Endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won.
The way Church should be. Honoring and adoring Christ and His finished work. Not a circus with contemporary musicians in blue jeans, guitars and drums.
*😎Amen Christ the Lord has risen from the dead and became the life giving Spirit so that He can dwell in our hearts to transform us into His likeness which Adam lost in the garden of Eden✝️💐*
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (April 20, Easter Sunday), we sang Thine Is the Glory as the Hymn of the Day. It is #376 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship. CHRIST IS RISEN! ALLELUIA! HE IS RISEN, INDEED! ALLELUIA! ALLELUIA!
To everyone who participated in the beautiful renditions of these glorious hymns, thank you. I have watched this many times since losing my mother in 2015 and it has brought me great comfort. The Holy Spirit was with you that day and continues to work through this music. God bless all of you.
Only in the Christian faith is found One who conquered death and sin. Look in all the other religions, there you will find only death and despair, a dead or dying prophet, no deliverance from sin. Jesus Christ stands alone as your hope!
InnerMittenSignal , I normally use You Tube for hymns. I get regular icons for porn videos. One click, and I’d be deluged with similar evils. What chance has youth today, when this material is put before them daily ? Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God have mercy on me a sinner.
BRAVO and Thank you for posting The days of our waiting for OUR Saviour are at hand. May all of us who Love GOD and Believe in HIM be saved from the evils of this world. PAX+
I'd like to know why every church on earth isn't filled with people? We drove passed a big box hardware store on Easter Sunday and the parking lot was full !?!? Lord have mercy!
Two of the great hymns of the Christian Faith, full of wonderful truth and hope for this sinful and dying humanity! Where else can one find forgiveness of sin, and genuine hope for eternity? All praise and honor belongs to Jesus Christ who secured these for all who believe on Him. The greatest invitation still echoes across the centuries of time, down to our day: Come, believe, find forgiveness.. all who thirst for the water of life: Come!
Goodness gracious, what an entrance! Notice however, the choir processes and the congregation sings to the sounds of the Aeolian organ in the front. I still get goose bumps when the organist turns on that monster 32' reed at the last verse of Jesus Christ is Risen Today. Would that I had been there, what an instrument, what a sound. May it keep on being played for another 100 years.
Funny thing about the Aeolian organ: It was plagarized....stop for stop and scaling for scaling from Ernest Skinner's installation at Princeton, which Ralph Downes and G. Donald Harrison destroyed only a few years after it's installation in the late 20's. The only difference at Duke was the removal of the Echo division in favor of the Flentrop in the 1970's. At at time when most instruments such as the Aeolian headed for the scrap heap, it's amazing that Duke kept it more or less intact. When Foley Baker restored it, the few tonal alterations to it were reversed and today, minus the Echo, it remains as Aeolian's last, and arguably best organ.
The first three verses of Christ the Lord is Risen Today were played by Dr. Parkins on the Flentrop, located on a balcony between the narthex and the nave where it replaced the original Aeolian Echo and Antiphonal divisions. Dr. Arcus picked up the last verse on the Aeolian in the chancel with that decidedly healthy 32' Bombarde and finished the second hymn. I'm with you on the goose bumps! Michael's response is spot-on regarding the history and legacy of the Duke Aeolian. I sometimes wonder whether John Mander ever visited Duke when his firm restored the much-altered Skinner at Princeton in the 1990s.

Blood coming from all over his body and NAKED hanging on that cross like torture weapon! What a Lord and God and Savior! He had to do it. HE is God the Son and only His body and blood could pay the sins price of ALL ever! 1 John 2:1-2. God has richly blessed you. There is a Crown in Heaven awaiting all who faithfully share the Gospel of Jesus Christ and a soul is saved. ( "JESUS SAVES" below) 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20; Philippians 4:1.God knew your faithful praise ministry from before the world was made! Ephesians 1:1-14. Oh Lord bless this channel; a haven for your blessings in Jesus Christ. I will pray for you and those gathered here. The Apostle Paul testified; Romans 1:16 "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believes; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek". This praise resounds across the earth: "Jesus is Lord and only He saves". 2 Samuel 22: 50 "Therefore I will praise you, O Lord, out of the countries, and I will praise your name." JESUS SAVES God the Son (Jesus Christ) has given us the gospel to share with the world. Mark 16: 15: "And He said unto them, Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." How can anyone hear the "good" news? Romans 10: 17 "Then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (We receive the "word" in many ways. The "Word" is Jesus Christ!); John 1:1-5 The Spirit teaches through the Word) Isaiah 7: 14: "Therefore the LORD shall give you a sign; behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and call His name Immanuel." Hebrew: עִמָּנוּאֵל, "God with us" in human flesh but without sin. The Savior of the world was born to die for our sins! He did so 33 years later. His terrible ordeal; body mutilated; blood poured out, finally died (John 19:30; Luke 23:46 ) and was placed in a tomb and rose from the dead the 3rd day ! "HE IS RISEN" Matthew 28: 6. Isaiah 53:" 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all." - IT IS FOUNDED UPON GOD'S LOVE FOR MAN AND WOMAN HE CREATED John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3: 23 " For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6: 23 " Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by me.."John 14: 6 "1 Corinthians 15: 1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.3 "For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:" THE PAYMENT BY HIS BLOOD FOR ALL SINS EVER! "And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world." 1 John 2: 2 “For he (God) hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” 2 Corinthians 5: 21. "In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;." Ephesians 1: 7 BY GOD'S GRACE ALONE THROUGH FAITH ALONE IN JESUS CHRIST ARE WE SAVED Ephesians 2: 8 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 not of works, lest any man should boast." WHOSOEVER BELIEVES SHALL TESTIFY TO THE TRUTH Romans 10: 9 That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart man believes in righteousness; And a confession by mouth is given for salvation. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Salvation and forgiveness of sins is the blessing of anyone who believes in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. We receive the baptism of God the Holy Spirit immediately which seals us in Christ and that is permanent! Ephesians 1:13-14. Those who reject the free gift of salvation, see John 3:16 above, "perish", which means their sins are judged by God the Son and they suffer eternal separation from God and the family of God forever called the "second death". Revelation 21: 8. "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." Romans 5: 1
I was a little devote Lutheran child...until my father died and I had show tunes played at his funeral.Because when we were working in Africa...the darn church dropped them from the membership for non "dues" payments. We played show tunes and had a Masonic service. I give the "woke"church no loyalty now. However I did have a first special service for two of my childrens's bapstisms...Lutheran and Catholic. Requiring special dispensations etc. from the churches here in USA. Dropped membership for being out of country ? So much for the Lutherans !! While overseas we supported the christian services ministry that bravely travelled the area. Churches need to stop being political !!!
I'm enjoying being a Christian. Christianity is sweet. If I could have the opportunity of coming to the world a second time, I will still like to be a Christian. Thank God anyway that it is from this earth to heaven at the expiration of the sojourn down here.
I've exclaimed this before, the young, the not so young, still give praise and acclaim their Resurrection from mediocrity. Jesus as His Easter does, wafts through the ages. Duke's Liturgy is superb their choir and congregation are bold.
Beautiful singing to the Lord God, Creator & Savior to all who believe! ✝️👑💖 & this delightful song be followed by the teaching of the Word of God 📖, The Bible... His Word , His revelation to us... & May we obey! 2020 🦠
These hymns are truly breathtaking and transcendental. I like the way they're played in their original form and not sped up. These songs help us remember to follow the example of Christ and praise him with gratitude without ceasing.....
Glory of God, The HOLY of HOLIES, as the choir and ministers come to Preach the Word of God, the Church has been Prayed over hours before and the HOLY SPIRIT falls on the congregation. The Word of God and Worship songs to Jesus Christ and God bring forth God's pure Heart , Mind and Spirit. Amen
The crowd size has NOTHING to do with social distancing. 95% of those people are the “C & E crowd.” They go to church for Christmas and Easter, that’s it.
I always love that when Christ Jesus is worshipped where a lot of people are. Its powerful in doing so the heavenly angels are worship together. Hallelujah.
mom2cairns I think this is the only set of robes the choir has. they're blue, which isn't a parament color used at Duke Chapel (purple is used for Lent and Advent)
Blessed the Mighty Lord Jesus Christ! He arose from the tomb Alleluia, Alleluia! Glory to the Holy Trinity, Alleluia, Alleluia, now and forever! Simplement majestueux|
You don't hear the hymns ringing out like this anymore in sanctuaries and that is just sad. I don't mind contemporary music but nothing beats a well tuned pipe organ with accompanying brass. The organist was on fire though.
Die? So be it, but I doubt it. Maybe these churches will eventually become what Christ would have wanted--and not social clubs whose hierarchy is based on race and income.
not quite :) Duke Chapel is Ecumenical (so non-denominational), but the Dean of the Chapel at the time was Anglican, so many elements of the service were similar to Episcopalian services
G B, I wish. J Man’s got a point. This is right in the middle of North Carolina in the southeastern US. Not to mention, this is the chapel for a university that is less than 50% white. facts.duke.edu/
B Wolf Thank you. I am from the North, north of New York. I have first hand experience wifh racism in NC churches in my own family including a pastor of an all-white NC urban church and another attending in a rural setting. I was shocked, but even more, I was saddened. One Easter Sunday I was golfing at Santee National and stopped for quite a while on the green of a hole to listen to the singing of a black congregation on the other side of the road - that was a spiritual experience. My foursome had moved on and I guess some of the congregants were perplexed I had remained. I also know the line "we have to buy a home in a neighborhood with good schools."
