Talking before our live session with pianist Christian Sands and his trio, I told him his former boss, bassist Christian McBride, formed his New Jawn without a pianist because Sands is irreplaceable. He laughed out loud and said, "I like the way you think!" After hearing his phenomenal trio in our Seattle studios, that idea may not be so farfetched.
Christian Sands' new album Facing Dragons is his second in two years, and just his second as a leader. It's clear the role suits him. The new release is almost entirely original music by Sands and shows a pianist rooted in jazz tradition, confidently expressing his own musical personality.

He plays with Christian McBride sometimes,great young pianist,love this. The mix isn't very good,you can't hear the drums and bass,but the magic comes through.

When you are a classical musician and suddenly you realize you need desperately to know what are the chords in 0:31 (I know they might not be that crazy for a normal jazz musician, but...oh god these chords feel soo good)

And they feel so good because they have a really ambient "not going anywhere" sound. I don't know if you've learned about suspensions in classical music but it's not uncommon for jazz musicians to use that suspended sound without resolving to create a particular sound

Yeah, I know about suspensions and in fact they are very common in classical music. But they are used in the context of functional harmony, usually in a V chord. Furthermore, classical harmony doesn't explain this type of chords because technically they are more a matter of counterpoint (the 4 in the sus4 chord is an apoggiatura to de 3 and theoretically it has to be resolved). As you have mentioned, the "not going anywhere" sound is what makes these chords interesting to me.

Yes, two sus7 chords (sometimes described as something like, say, Ebmaj with F in the bass). Growing up in the 70s, when pop music was jam packed with that sound, it's very affecting for me as well. I sometimes wonder if that harmonic structure is powerful on its own, or just something I learned to like.
