This song puts me in tears every time I hear this song. The imagery that I get with the song...This song is so damned true....

This song is about how Christians see themselves versus their true actions in reality. how they really treat people. It’s reality versus their projection a faith. He’s not talking about the ones that actually live the way they are scripturally taught in Christianity.

@VinAnd Sori This song is NOT a "diss on Christianity" at all. It is actually in agreement with the Bible about the state of the world about how "what is evil shall be called good and what is good shall be called evil." He is saying things are the reverse of how they should be, and not saying that it is a good thing at all; that things like being rich and gluttonous are praised as virtues while things like being "pure of heart" and "peaceful" are treated as weaknesses and people who have those traits get trampled on. The final lyric is actually, "F*** the doomed, you're on your own," not "the new." When he talks about "The new beatitude: 'Good luck, you're on your own,'" he's saying that is the current prevalent attitude in society, "every man for himself," and "F*** the doomed, you're on your own," because these selfish individuals don't care about helping someone else who is "doomed," and leave them to fend for themselves. They only care about helping themselves.

It’s an indictment on modern, politically minded evangelicals. The Beatitudes are changed to blessed are the 7 deadly sins, then saying the true beatitudes have been abandoned. In several ways recently, the band has been proven correct in their lyrics.

I ❤️ how you can see how Sori FEELS the lyrics & the music together! Vin just seems like he rocks out to the beat until he hears an offensive or questionable lyric.

I pulled out a $20K loan from Sallie Mae to go to the Art Institute. My dad and all my family were completely against it and I couldn’t understand why they didn’t want me to go to college. After getting there I talked with alumni, professors, current students and drop outs and learned what a HUGE mistake I had made. I ended up being hospitalized a year later with a mental breakdown after I was asked to pull out another $20K to keep going to college. A college no one was getting jobs in the fields they studied, going straight back to McDonald’s with over $100K in debt. What this countries done to its youth is appalling. I really didn’t understand what I was doing, I thought that’s what everyone just does… I dropped out and paid off my debt in about 10 years with help from my family. I highly discourage going to college unless it’s a free ride.

I have a hard time speaking about my acts of kindness that I've done to people, according to the sermon of the mount. Either you were there to witness with your own eyes or you will never know. I rarely speak about these things just to specific friends. I had often not the best understanding oft the connection between the verses but I think I could figure out a healthy synergy between "So that your giving may be in secret" and "Let your light shine before men". So, how could I ever write about such an event for the entire Internet? Maybe some words.._ Let's say, I gave a homelss person a certain amount of money and he was really happy and said that he prayed for that amount of money. Let's leave it at that. I am no hero. I'm just a nobody. Forget my name but remember this: giving a person a gift is really more pleasing than buying stuff for yourself.

I think you are missing the point, the song is not about demonizing the rich, it's about demonizing the poor, basically criticizing society for idolizing the rich as if they were holy, and treating the poor like subhuman scum just because they are poor, because it's the dollar that is really worshiped in the west and the people who have less of it are less valuable, less holy, cursed, and doomed.

This whole album was very different from anything Maynard's done in the past, with Tool or APC. You should also give Talk Talk a listen (it's basically a middle finger to everyone who professes "thoughts and prayers" but never does anything) and also Disillusioned. Really, just listen to more APC period. They have a lot of good songs. Edit: I love Vin's rage at the hypocrisy of Evangelicals. So deserved.

I don't know if this was intentional, but the rhythm and mood of the instrumentals in this song is very much like a death march. It really helps portray the message that we are all doomed, not that I particularly believe this one way or another (I tend to sway back and forth on this on a day to day basis). Musical genius in my opinion.

Dude you got it on point in your explanation. I do have to add that just because Christianity does follow a guide for being a good person not all Christians actually follow certain moral beliefs. You can be a kind-hearted, righteous, and merciful person without being christian. I do not go to church but I do believe in being a good and decent human that loves others no matter what background they are ethnically or culturally. Actions speak louder than words

Compassion is priceless in the truest sense of the word. It should be given freely and in abundance. This is not to say that people who offer nothing to society should receive everything unconditionally, just that we should offer assistance so they can help themselves regardless of where they come from, what color they are, how they choose to worship or who they choose to love. People should not be actively inhibited from bettering themselves. You shouldn't need religion and scripture to tell you to have compassion for others. Compassion should be a fundamental aspect of everyone's life.

The problem with the government dipping into your pocket is, where does it end and once they have that power how do you stop it from becoming worse. Give an inch take a mile. The problem is people not taking it upon themselves to help, just let the government take care of it. Comfort at any cost😉

Thanks so much for making this video. I think this is a really important discussion to be had. I wanted to talk to your point about people "demonizing the rich". You're right, almost everyone in America is "rich" globally and historically speaking. But there are like 20 people in this country who hoard more wealth than the lowest 70% of a very rich country combined. That, in itself, is the sin. I have no problem with people having abundance. What i have a problem with is a small number of people having more of an abundance than you or i could imagine and hoarding the majority of it away while people sleep in streets. Beyond that... there are 0 billionaires whose money was not made on the back of exploitation. Apple (and all tech companies) still allow slave labor in their supply chain. All these companies feast not WHILE others starve but BECAUSE others starve. And that is why i demonize the rich. I'm not envious of them. I don't want 100 million dollars because i would feel guilty if i had it. I'd feel the need to see to it that the tide rose with me. But it turns out that the only people who make that kind of money ruthlessly pursue it. And the kind of person who ruthlessly pursues money is amoral. On a less argumentative note. I, too, think it's very funny when evangelicals complain about taxes or champion lower taxes. Did jesus himself not ask whose face was on the coinage and say "give to caesar that which is caesar's and give to God that which is God's"?

Demonizing the rich always reminds me of the whole Lars Ulrich/Napster tussle in the early 2000's. There were a couple nightly news pieces of disgruntled fans having these giant bonfires where they were chucking Metallica CDs in the flames and stomping on them.
