Another project off my list! What is Christie Suspension all about? How did it come to be? And what's it's life story? In this video I start from the beginning of Christie Suspension, and take you on a journey through the interwar period as we truly get to know The Man, The Myth, and The Legend.
This was a blast to research and edit, and I'm once again super excited to get this out to you all.

Finally! It feels so good to get this off the assembly line. Hope it was worth the wait. I wanna start getting some easier videos out, increase my upload rate and generally make content that's easier to consume and the YT algorithm will like. Higher quality documentary videos like this one won't be going anywhere, but there might be larger gaps between them filled with more WT montages, tank related gaming, or anything else I wanna make. Thanks for watching!

Christie suspension, a suspension made by a speed freak for tanks. Such a strange combination.
@billwilson3609
@billwilson3609 2 года назад
The US Army became speed freaks after watching Christie's 1928 tank fly around on tracks then on wheels. Christie had a mounted a pipe in the front as a fake cannon with the gunner sitting in front of the driver that had an overhead dome with vison slits to see where he was going. Christie pointed out that it's low height (under 6 feet) and speed would make it a difficult target to hit when racing around behind enemy lines shooting thing up. The Army gave up on using the Christie suspension due to the spring assemblies. They took up too much room when installed in the interior and were too prone to get damaged in battlefield conditions when mounted outside the hull.

The Comet was indeed the last tank to use the Christie suspension. It was the heaviest tank to use it which the British was very well aware the weight limits the suspension could be utilized.

A fellow Christie fan, nice. I'm very much so a big fan of the mid-late British cruiser tanks such as the crusader. It earned a poor rep due to reliability issues in the desert, but performed fine England during tests, the problem was simply a poorly placed intake that got sand stuck in it. Regardless, the emphasis on mobility, slopes and profile that the crusader series had clearly reflects that of modern tank development, if the Centurion was the first MBT, then the Crusader would be a proto-MBT.

Very interesting video, thanks for the work you put into it. What I want to know is how the poor bastards inside the tanks survived the epic jumps. They are coming down HARD, and the ones that are landing in water surely experienced some pretty wicked deceleration. I imagine all those dudes shouting "Cowabunga!" as they go airborne (as was popular back then*) and absolutely getting their organs liquified on landing. * Citation needed.

I haven’t gone that far yet, but I wouldn’t doubt it! The Tank Archives blog has sooo much on Soviet Tankery from interwar to latewar, you can very easily watch the development of the BT series and see it evolve into the T34 and slightly beyond all on one website. With original documents from the red army itself. Super fascinating.

You should flip the segment explaining what Christie suspension was to the beginning as that is probably what most people are looking to understand, not so much the politics of military acquisitions. So comparing whatever the conventional suspension of the time with Christie suspension should be your opening explanation. Though Christie does sound like a colorful character.
@eta320
@eta320 2 года назад
I agree! Although the purpose of this video is to give a quick and easy-to-consume summary of the history of its testing and use in other countries, so I think the video stays on topic. But I do think a quick minute or less explanation of how Christie suspension works could have been put earlier.

Christie was quite innovative. He first gained attention by patenting an improved dreadnaught turret ring design that was used by the USN and foreign navies. Next came his first front wheel drive vehicle which was a two wheel cab that replaced the teams of horses that pulled steam powered fire department pumpers. Jay Leno owns one that Los Angeles used. Next up was Christie's FWD taxi cabs that were popular with passengers due to using a double-drop chassis that set the passenger floor closer to the ground. The taxi drivers found the steering to be too stiff with the car falling into disfavor after Christie failed to improve it. Christie then got into FWD race cars using V4 engines he designed. His last V4 displaced 1,308 cubic inches (327 c.i.d. per cylinder).
@eta320
@eta320 2 года назад
Yeah he has a very extensive racing history. I remember watching an episode of Jay Leno’s garage with the Christie fire engine during research for this video and was disappointed the never mentioned his Tankery endevours. Or any other military work he did for that matter
@billwilson3609
@billwilson3609 2 года назад
@@eta320 Walter also did some work on early submarine designs before he got into racing. His taxi cab design had a novel feature where the entire front end, that held the engine, transmission and drive axles/suspension, could be removed as a complete unit so a replacement could be bolted on in less than one hour so a cabbie didn't lose many fares waiting on repairs. I suspect some arsenal and ordnance engineers remembered that so worked that feature into the M3 and M4 designs. The Army began their strange relationship with Christie in 1916 when he submitted his prototype 4 wheel gun motor carriage that deviated from the Army engineers specifications. The Army continued to hire Christie to build their designs and he continued to build those his way even though the Army was paying him handsome sums for his work. Christie also manufactured and sold track systems for commercial and heavy trucks with twin front or rear axles that used one or two wheels per side. Those gave the vehicles better floatation on muddy roads so were generally purchased by logging and mining operations.

@@eta320 Jay probably wanted to mention J Walter's tanks but was told to stay on script. His FWD drive taxi might of gone into mass production if he had found a way to make the steering less strenuous. It probably was due to excessive weight on the front tires. Too bad he didn't move the passenger compartment forward and put the engine and transaxle drive in the back.

The Churchill did not make use of Christie suspension, but all of the tanks in the British 'cruiser' series did! (A13, Crusader, Cromwell, Comet). Along with the Russians, the British were certainly one of the most avid users of the system. I don't believe there are any modern tanks today that make use of Christie suspension. The British have switched to Hydropneumatics, and the Russians use Torsion Bars.

The Merkava does use a coil spring suspension, but it’s not really “Christie” suspension. Christie’s suspension was famous for just how massive the springs themselves were, which allowed the wheels very good travel. The Merkavas springs are pretty standard size from what I know. So while it is the same form factor, some pedantic nerd out there could point out that it isn’t, by definition, Christie suspension. And that nerd is me 🤓

Sorry for the late reply! Although I wasn’t 100% sure when I made this video, since the only source I had bothered to check was Wikipedia. I can now say for a fact it is indeed Christie suspension. The Comet evolved from the cruiser series of British tanks, all of which used Christie Suspension and the Comet was the last one to do so. Wikipedia, Tank Encyclopedia, Bovington Museum, and many other sources confirm this. But of course, why trust the words of random articles when you can see for yourself! The Shadock is a source I trust very much, and they have a series of pictures of surviving comet tanks, a few of which are cracked open and allow you to see the suspension inside. Shadock also provides original sources for their photos so you can check their legitimacy. Here is a great one of a rusted Comet hull on the beach. The angled Christie springs are clearly visible: www.flickr.com/photos/halfpenny/2224385920/ There is another photo of a Comet in a restoration garage that shows the suspension quite well, but I’ll let you see that on your own: the.shadock.free.fr/Surviving_Comets.pdf Happy digging!

I never get the whole "US didn't adopt Christie Suspension because they thought it was stupid" argument. If that were true, then what is the M1931? The US Army was very interested in Christie's design, however they were not interested working with Christie as a person. Every change that the Army suggested from the M1931 trial, Christie refused, hell he adamantly and verbally argued against the US Army from changing his design because Christie wanted sports car in a tank form. He became such an asshole of a man to deal with that the US Army dropped the idea of adopting the Christie Suspension because the inventor was impossible to work with.
@eta320
@eta320 Год назад
Most people just aren’t aware of the numerous projects the US experimented with using Christie suspension, such as the T3, T3E2, T4, or T7. And even with Christie being as difficult to work with as he was, the US still pursued the suspension after they cut him from all the projects, just passing on the duties to other manufacturers.
