Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) is now regarded as having secured a place as one of the great Victorian novelists, ranked alongside such contemporaries as Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, Wilkie Collins, William Thackeray and Mrs. Gaskell, although towards the end of his life his literary reputation fell and his work was somewhat overlooked until a critical reassessment in the mid-20th century. He was born in London, one of several children of Thomas Anthony Trollope, a barrister, and his wife Frances Milton Trollope, who was herself to become a successful and highly regarded novelist in the 1830s and 40s (her 1836 book 'Jonathan Jefferson Whitlaw' was a strongly anti-slavery novel which is said to have influenced Harriet Beecher Stowe in writing 'Uncle Tom's Cabin').
Anthony stayed in London when his mother (and later his father) spent several years living in the United States; soon after their return to Europe his father's debts obliged the family to relocate to Belgium, and Anthony joined them there briefly before returning to England to take up a clerkship in the General Post Office, arranged by a family friend. He remained with the postal service for several years, including a stint in Ireland as a postal surveyor. He began writing while taking countless long train journeys around Ireland in the course of his official duties as a Post Office Inspector. During his Irish service he met and married his wife, Rose Heseltine (1821-1917). Many of his early novels were set in and about Ireland, although these received a mixed reception. Trollope was sent back to England in 1851, to take charge of the postal service in south west England and Wales, which again necessitated much travel. It was at this time that he conceived the "Barchester" novels which were to make his name, beginning with 'The Warden' (1855) and 'Barchester Towers' (1857). His seniority at the Post Office grew in parallel with his success as a novelist, and on being passed over for the role of Chief Secretary to the Postmaster General in the early 1860s he decided to resign and make his living as an author. He contributed fiction to the Cornhill Magazine, St Paul's Magazine and other periodicals, and also co-founded his own magazine, the Fortnightly Review, in 1865.
Leaving public service meant he was now free to indulge his interest in politics; he became active in Liberal circles and at the 1868 general election he stood as the Liberal candidate for Parliament at Beverley, in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Although the Liberal Party won that election, bringing William Gladstone to power as prime minister for the first of his four terms, Trollope himself failed to gain his seat, being defeated by the Conservatives. The "Palliser" novels, his second great series of novels (after Barchester) reflect his interest in politics, government, the use of (and corruption by) power.
Trollope travelled widely in the later years of his life, to the USA, Australia and South Africa, and published some travel writing as a result of his experiences. He died in London in 1882, and was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery. He was survived by his wife and two children.
'Christmas at Thompson Hall' was first published in 'The Graphic' Christmas number in December 1876.

Bless you, Simon Stanhope. You are supposed to be having a great time with friends and family; and here you are giving us another treat. Thank you, I do appreciate your remarkable talent and effort. ✝️🕊️🕊️🕊️✝️🎇 I'm going to enjoy every second of the wonderful story you've chosen. Thought it fair to tell you that I laughed my butt off 😂 When she was horrified by what she had done accidentally, I was thinking that it would be hilarious if the stranger was her soon to be brother in law......Then the giggles wouldn't stop. Felt sorry for ol' girl because I have some dyslexia. And she looked at the room number real hard to make sure it was right, too! Been there, done that 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆 You and the story are absolutely GOLD 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Hello Simon. This was a real gem from Anthony Trollope. It has been such a long time since I read it. It seems every Victorian writer had a ghost story in their canon of work. It was great that you attached those velvet vocal tones to Count Magnus. It is one of my all time favourites. I love the Scandinavian setting and you have done such a sterling job as usual. Coincidentally the BBC will be showing an adaptation of this story on Friday night 23rd December(BBC 2 at 10pm). Mark Gatis is the gentleman who has adapted the story and he is such an ardent M.R. James devotee. Also by the way it was great to put a face to those soft velvet vocal tones. Forgive me for being so forward but that distinctive vocal symphony voice of yours which sounds so experienced on lifes journey is attached to such a youthful countenance. Crikey you must be related to Dorian Gray! It is so satisfying that your channel has grown from strength to strength. Richly deserved. Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I am already looking forward to 2023 as with you at the helm of HMS Stanhope you will bring us on a voyage through the dark waters of mystery, horror, supernatural, and suspense until we safely arrive back on terra firma. One hope's. Wishing you continued success in all future endeavours. God Bless.

You are a perfect narrator. I always enjoy your work. You have such a rich and pleasant voice and you are a master of your craft. Thank you so much. I have difficulty reading for more than a few minutes anymore, as my old eyes give me problems - even after many trips to the eye doctor. I love to listen to you while crocheting in the evening, or with my morning coffee. Once again, thank you so very much.

I have to agree with you. I wasn't fully aware of my displeasure with tv; I'd turn it on, try to enjoy a show and promptly turn it off. I used to question how people, in the days before television, could listen to the radio with any contentment. Now I wonder how I could have stood it for so long ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Merry Christmas 🎄⛄✝️🕊️🕊️🕊️✝️

This is absolutely splendid and a particular treat for me! Being born and bred in Stratford London (about a mile from Bow) I loved the place references. Essex Flats would have become Wanstead Flats I presume and afterwards Wanstead, the constituency held by a certain Winston Churchill amongst others. I did snort involuntarily on a couple of occasions during this cautionary tale. Thank you Simon!

I had a miserable evening journey from Brighton to Bournemouth today, the satnav told me I had an extra 75 minutes added to the estimated 3 and a quarter hours drive. I was down in the dumps. I thought I know I'll listen to a Bitesize Audio rendition and chose this particular story. I was not happy until I started listening to this. Simon, the actor who brings these stories to life was on fire when he made this recording. Well I laughed and laughed, his delivery made this even more humorous and of course its almost impossible to feel down when you laugh. Once again Simon and long gone authors saved the day. Splendid!

What a treat, 1 hours 43 minutes of a Christmas story! This is perfect for me right now. I'm drawing a portrait of my sister's cat, whom she's very very fond of. It's sort of a Christmas gift. It's a little boring at parts, particularly when I've been drawing fur for 4 hours straight and there's still several more to go, so this will be perfect to make the tedious parts a little more fun (and hopefully to preserve my sanity)! Absolutely wonderful tales....and excellent performance!!!! I had an experience akin to this in Fez Morocco. I was staying at a hotel. My room was the first door on the right on the second floor landing. Being the third floor in my mind as the first floor in the USA is considered the ground floor in much of the world. I came back very late at night and entered what I thought was my room. I never lock my door when it is possible. Closing the door behind me i approached the bed and saw a couple sleeping in the bed ...i was slightly horrified....what would happen if they were to awake and see an American peering down on them?! I quietly turned around and left, to go up one more floor to my room! They hadn't locked their door either! Very safe place Fez. Thank you! Excellent work!

Thank you so much. Very amusing. You are the best voice performer l have heard. I can picture all the characters and scenes. It is amazing how you can do that so smoothly. I appreciate all the work that must go into each one and that you share them with us all. Merry Christmas.

What an absolute JOY! I have been quartering and peeling apples to freeze, and the time just sped by. You are such a great speaker, I love your voice. (I shall not shut up about Diary of a Nobody; you would read it superbly.)

Hah! You could see it all coming a mile away, and it didn't matter. It was still so funny. The Victorians should indeed have locked their bedroom doors! Thank you. Delightful story.

Thank you, Simon. I enjoyed this tale, a comedy of errors. I guessed where the story was heading well before the end, but that didn't spoil my enjoyment.👍😄

I put this audio on whilst driving my dreary 26 miles commute. By the time you had built to the main crescendo. I was crying with laughter. My face was hurting! Thank you so much. It was a well needed tonic after a very busy day. Fabulous.

What an amusing story. Trollope is a master if creating quirky characters and you read this wonderfully!

Found your channel by chance. The choices put before children in school, I believe, shape their future, both for reading and their actual daily living. The system tells children they must read this and that from a set age. My nephew was deemed unteachable, so he became home schooled as did his older sister. At nearly 9, he said to his mom, "I want to read." She couldn't kerp up with his needs. He still reads at over 30. His sister became high up at Waterstones. Books and magazines are a big part of my family and my sister in laws. Thank you for this video and best wishes
