Ok, this video sounds weird. And it is sooo wrong 1) Ded Moroz was inspired by many different things but mostly Karachun - the pre-Christian character that was, indeed, scary but people believed they could please him by offering him food (hence the reason why Ded Moroz doesn't hide from people). If in good mood, Karachun would send plenty of snow to cover the crops which mean people would have a good harvest. Not so evil after all 2) Stalin did NOT hate Ded Moroz and had nothing to do with the ban. In fact, he was the reason why Ded Moroz returned to the masses. 3) The person who is credited with the replacement of Christmas by New Year is Pavel Postyshev. He also believed that it is important to have a big celebration just like there was in the Imperial time because back then children of the working parents could only dream about having such celebrations and now the government has the means to do that for everyone. 4) Christmas tree became the integral part of the celebration at the same time Ded Moroz did, in 1937. 5) Santa and Ded Moroz are NOT the same! 6) Santa traditionally rides sleigh with 3 horses (obviously, some cartoons and movies can take liberty with that) 7) Why is celebrating New Year so weird? There is no attachment to religion so people in Russia who belong to different religion don't have any problems celebrating this day. 8) I didn't find anything about people suing government to make Christmas illegal (looked it up in Russian sources). 9) We have a week of free days starting from New Year and ending in Christmas. Religious people get to celebrate Christmas the way they want and non-religious or non-Christians have time for themselves. People definitely care about that

The summer after graduating college, I read a book called "The Education of a Traitor," about a little girl growing up in Communist Russia. She mentioned watching a play about Grandfather Frost trying to evade bad guys and save New Year's. I had no idea that Grandfather Frost had such a controversial legacy from that time. The narrator didn't mention it. Then again, she was only eight at the time she saw the play, so I'm not sure how much she knew at that time or later. Thanks for the video, Eskify. Happy Holidays!
