Christmas 1978 on the BBC was nearly going to be all repeats if the unions did not have their way. Bill Cotton the BBC One controller actually had to devise two schedules, one would consist of imported films and repeats of previous Christmas shows if the unions continued with their strike, and one with their normal schedule. BBC management caved in and offered the unions their whopping pay rise and the BBC started up again on Saturday 23rd December 1978 after no television at all on BBC One or Two from Wednesday 20th December and an all BBC network radio output on Friday 22nd December.
Poor viewers in Yorkshire Television ITV region in 1978. They had no Christmas ITV at all as Yorkshire were on strike and would not end until the close of 1978, meaning Christmas ITV shows would air in Yorkshire in January 1979. At one stage they had no television channels at all from Wednesday 20th until Friday 22nd December 1978, with the BBC on strike.

If BBC One and BBC Two went off air on strike, they would barely lose 3 or 4 million viewers, which is the largest amount who watch the channels on a regular daily basis at best. RU-vid, Netflix, Amazon Prime ec don't go on strike ever!

The speeding up/slowing down is my ninja editing skills at work. The darker ones are the evening version in crepuscular purple, and the night-time version. At the closedown it fades to black.

No, no, no, losing them by Boxing Day is far too depressing. It's like the telly is yelling "CHRISTMAS IS OVER YOU BAAAASTAAAARDS" right in your face. Idents should go back to the grind on January 2nd like everyone else in the nation.
I'm honestly ok that you decided to skip 74 and 75. They were basically the same ident, the mirrored globe but with a Snowflake Tinsel BG. Both have different Text Fonts.
I've never understood the UK's obsession with Victoriana at Christmas. It wasn't exactly a happy time. Do you think in 100 years time, we'll have Christmas images portraying hooded street urchins mugging old ladies, and knifing people loaded down with Argos carrier bags?
Perhaps, after Boxing Day, channels should still have special idents but come up with something for New Year? Still wintery and celebratory, but obviously post Christmas?!
can someone confirm this, from my childhood i remember BBC1 having one year having fantastic Christmas promos that ran during December of that year that was of a snowy Victorian London with 'The Cambridge Buskers' . Im I right? id love to see them promos again, i remember everyone passed comment about how good they were.
It's not just the BBC, it's a British thing. Victoriana = Christmassy. Maybe it's because that's when most of our traditions were first canonised (Albert brought things like Christmas Trees over from Germany)
Thanks for these. It's the 29/12/09, and aren't we all fed up with David Tennant molesting reindeer. Gone by Boxing Day should be the policy. The pudding IS the Citizen Kane of yuletide idents for the simple strength of it's memory. I mentioned looking at some of these old idents to my mother.....And guess which one she remembered, without any prompting at all, 32 YEARS AFTER IT WAS LAST SHOWN. I've never worked in advertising, suffice to say I know you can't buy corporate branding like that.
If only Christmas TV can be good again and I wish Christmas TV to go back in time like how TV was like long time ago and Christmas TV today is rubbish and Christmas TV will never be the same again and we pay for this rubbish and too much repeats at Christmas on TV if only we did not have COVID by getting rid of stars on TV and off TV too and my TV and my favourite comedy I liked watching at Christmas was only fools and horses and I don't think Mrs brown boys not any good at Christmas anymore and same films are shown ever year
