Exactly. If there were no eyes, the sun wouldn't be bright. What is a star when there is no awareness to see it's light or feel it's heat? Whatever description you came up with would be meaningless, really. A star wouldn't even be distinguishable as an object distinct from the rest of the continuous ocean of reality. The form of the universe is created through an awareness of it. This is why consciousness is the most fundamental layer of existence.

There are various opinions, but when a lot of people talk about the nature of consciousness being an illusion they don’t mean it doesn’t exist. They mean it isn’t what it appears to be. That a lot of what we think or believe about consciousness is mistaken. There was a great interview with Susan Blackmore on this on the channel a few months ago. When there is a discrepancy between physical reality and your conscious perception. When they vary, which one wins. Your mistaken perception or reality? Surely the fact that we can have misperceptions, and be wrong about what we perceive, proves that objective reality is primary over our conscious experience?

@@simonhibbs887 You just have to be careful about what we're calling "objective reality." Take a simple case. We're together in a room with a table and you say to me, "There's a table there." I say, "No there isn't, that's not a table that's just wood." You say "Well, if you wanna play that game, it's not even wood it's just atoms." A blind person enters the room and says they don't even see a table, etc... All we can actually talk about is perception, but there's no way to ever say okay we finally reached "objective reality." All you have is perceptions and other people around you agreeing with your perceptions. What is the source of all perception? It's consciousness. That "light" of experience is a constant while the whole universe around us is in constant change. Even if we're in a matrix or a dream, consciousness cannot be doubted. That is why consciousness is primary.

@@REDPUMPERNICKEL wouldn’t be surprised, it’s similar to the idea of free will, where we argue day in and day out about its ontology but no one can really explain what is meant by the idea. Personally I believe consciousness is tautologically default, in that everything experiences, which is what is means to be casually involved. A rock is conscious then to the extent that if feels itself and it’s environment. However, we must therefore clarify what we mean, because we aren’t then talking about our ability to experience, rather the uniqueness of the sentient experience, which might be just a complex version of the same essential tautology.

Be careful playing with consciousness, you may want to get rid of pain but you might end up ridding yourself of so much more, there isn't exactly a way to check. Even if people say they are fine, it could just be because you tinkered with their brain.

Seems to me that getting better control over one's thoughts would be a very good thing especially when it comes to pain thoughts. I think this is exactly what some eastern types, yogis maybe, are trying to accomplish. I know when I was very young I'd kick up quite a fuss over a wasp sting but today not so much.

They have, but theirs cant be heightened willingly like humans can. After the pandemic, some marvelous transpired and many brushed it off. Each continent took advantage of it in an impatient context, specifically the youths or young ones. For few, it became an eye opener to take advantage of space, air, and sun.

How we are conscious can be understood but it's a little tricky because of its abstract nature.

I think you're on to something here. I study theology, in the scientific sense and not mere belief, and the Wiseman always speak of consciousness as that which can never be grasped, thought of, or defined, but always ungraspable yet allows for grasping concepts and things; always unintelligible but allows for the intelligible. This is simply the nature of consciousness I learn. It's never known directly, or objectively, but indirectly or as the subject.

@@S3RAVA3LM If you tell me that a thing can't be grasped, thought of or defined, maybe the only logical conclusion is that the thing doesn't actually exist. If you look inside a human, all you will find is living tissue, so it's also reasonable to conclude that it is living tissue that through some unknown physical process becomes an entity, and part of being a living organism is awareness of yourself and your surroundings. What we would call conscious is just a thing being alive.

I think it is. Qualia are illusions. The brain produces simplified view of the world based on stimuli, decorated by all kinds of sensations. Colors for example aren't a physical property of objects. Experiencing red is just an illusion, there is no such property as "red" to real objects, rather, it is a simplification which makes it easier to make decisions. Flow of time is another good example. Almost all physicists agree that the Universe is a static structure. Time doesn't flow in any direction, past and future are equally real. Yet we somehow experience flow of time. This is an illusion, but that doesn't make it any less real.

The ego i.e. the portion of consciousness you generally are aware of - is only a small tip of the iceberg of consciousness. The deeper you go into consciousness - the wider its scope and breadth. Consciousness can operate autonomously without ego awareness. Also, trying to figure out the nature of consciousness with a neurobiologist, is like trying to understand Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata by examining the parts of a radio.

It would show that consciousness is never free from suggestive experience inside our awareness. So awareness, association and consciousess blurr over in eachother with a varity linked to stages. So the lower brainwaves go, beta, alpha, theta and delta. The more consciousness becomes smaller less dominant and association inside awareness bigger. but its always a mix. This means that hypnotic trance, if its deep, and dreaming, rem sleep, are strongly related.

Yeah, that's an interesting field. Is it really consciousness that is manipulated or the bodies relation to brain, and brain to sense perception organs that are exploited. There was a man who was locked in a freezer once, and he died. First responders found out the freezer wasn't even on.

The world of our perception, that we experience, is not the actual world. Rather, it is a model of the world generated by our cognitive systems and populated from sensory inputs. It’s a virtual reality created by our brains that maps on to physical reality. This is why we can experience illusions or misperceptions, these are discrepancies between the sensory model and the physical world. Note that I am not denying the existence of a physical world. I am a physicalist. I believe it is real, but we do not experience it directly. The mistake Idealists make is that they take this experiential model created by our brains as primary and deny the physical world. That doesn’t work because, as I pointed out above, when there is a discrepancy between our perception and reality, reality always wins. They don’t take into account our ability for action, to test our perceptions against reality. This is how we know there is an objective universe.

@@simonhibbs887 Except the scientific evidence of Near-Death Studies - conducted over the last 30+ years by numerous scientists worldwide refutes your physicalist assumption the brain produces consciousness, since the scientific evidence demonstrates consciousness can be present when the brain is severely impaired or not functioning at all. This is science you (and Kuhn) pretty much ignore as if it doesn't even exist - which does not make your claim credible or scientifically non-biased. And on the other side of the coin, physicalists have yet to produce any scientific evidence the brain actually produces consciousness. Currently, neurologists have only been able to establish correlation of consciousness with brain states - but have not demonstrated causation. As far as science knows currently, the brain can act just like a radio or as an interface used by consciousness to operate in physical reality. The question of causation remains an open question scientifically. So on one hand, there is solid scientific evidence which you and Kuhn marginalize and do not take seriously - and on the other hand, your position is one with no scientific evidence at all. For me, this indicates a strong bias on both your parts, and lacks the objectivity science requires in order to move forward.

@@blijebij Information is just an object in consciousness. The subject/consciousness is that which perceives objects... Everything that could be known is only know by consciousness. But in the brain/body mechanism, conscious perception is artificially limited.

Thats no longer an object its no longer about parts then there is added an extra dimension. for example, an integrated state is not local. while information pieces are all locally pinpointed. An integrated state, on a very primitive way is a synomym for unity , although that not totally correct. So an integrated state is something special and extra that seperated parts of information never can represantate!

@@Corteum Remember, what is, is a very absolute question, the moment we leave our emperical human scale all can not be pinpointed perfectly by us, nor can we measure it always, or precise. I do not know all the answers, I only have a conceptual perspective. It would define consciousness as a virtual quality, to state it very abstract. One of the highest ordered forms of all phenomena's out there.

@@simonhibbs887 It is a process. A brain frozen in time on its own isn't capable of experiencing anything. Only when different parts of the brain start to cooperate with each other we begin to experience. I'm a fan of the idea proposed by Max Tegmark, that the consciousness can be seen as a specific state of matter. Integrated information theory might be a good place to start understanding it better.
