Christopher was top notch......his voice is great.Whoever thought to put Michael McDonald as a backup in this is a genius...their voices are great together.
The "Laura" song is about a real incident that occured in downtown Columbus, Ohio. A family on their way to church one Sunday morning was caught in gang crossfire and young teen Laura sitting alone in the back seat died from the gunshots. Christopher heard of this from one of his friends that knew her. There are the lyrics ..." Friend of a friend, friend to the end ..." A beautiful song, but sad.
What the previous post said about Michael McDonald.... EXACTLY!!!!! And glad you really enjoyed this tune.... Never forget my babysitter taking me to get an ice cream cone in her 69' GTO, listening to this song.... 70s Summer Magic!
Christopher Cross....he was pretty big with everyone back then. His vinyl was like a staple in most households. The whole album is really, really good. Won a bunch of awards.
There’s an instrumental version of this by the late great jazz trumpet legend, Freddie Hubbard, that’s probably cool for driving as well. 😊 You might enjoy to check out a video of a background recording session for Donna Summer, on a song called, State of Independence. Her part is already recorded so she’s not in the video, but there’s about 9 solo artists all called upon to sing in unison on this track, in some other language, almost like a chant. In addition to Christopher Cross & Michael McDonald, it will blow your mind who else is on it but that session predates We Are the World by like 5 years. It’s like someone must’ve just had a camcorder & was videoing, not particularly professional shooting. One thing to notice is how low key, humble & shy everyone seems, like no diva ego. In fact one singer seems kind of nervous cause she was smoking a cigarette in the studio which would be unheard of & totally taboo today, especially for singers. Anyway you might enjoy it. Great reaction! 👍🏾
This was from Christopher Cross's first album. He was the first artist in Grammy history to win all four general field awards in a single ceremony, bringing home Record of the Year ("Sailing"), Album of the Year (Christopher Cross), Song of the Year ("Sailing"), and Best New Artist at the 23rd Annual Grammy Awards in 1981. Not bad for an Austin boy!
ANGELA : This is from summer, 1980-------and you cannot appreciate this song, until you're on the road, at 3 AM, screaming down the freeway at 90 MP:H, with this blasting the radio ! In '82, as I was pulling into Las Vegas at 3 AM, this was playing on KOMA in Oklahoma, & I was pulling 110 MPH, on I-70 ! What a feeling ! Better than any drugs on earth !! ---------------------MJL, 75 y/o
Such a good album produced by David Foster with great musicians. Loved your reaction and so looking forward to more from you. Please keep up the good work! Love ya stay safe.
Love this sing its one of my guilty pleasures, looks like a bunch of math teachers who write funky songs on the weekends after a hard week o calculus. love my 90s but the 70s had some gems!
@@DayOneReacts I dont think they were they just look like teachers, they dont look like rock stars lol, I like the ' guilty pleasures ' list you do, can you do Dave Stewart (from the Eurythmics) and Candy Dulfer-' Lily was Here', greetings from Australia
Angie girl....as subscriber I can't agree more: there's no romantic songs like these anymore. So you found Bee Gee's, all four. You even found Carpenters brothers. I'd love to suggest: Minnie Riperton - Loving you. And a dash of Disco love by Donna Summer - I fell love 😘 kisses from Brazil
This was a big hit for him, though I think "Sailing" was bigger; in fact that song won Record of the Year and Song of the Year (1979 or 1980). And yes, Michael McDonald's voice is a perfect fit for it, just the right sound. I have this album, and listening to this tune makes me want to pull out the album and play it.
MONUMENTAL GIGANTESQUE FABULEUX PRODIGIEUX AHURISSANT EXTRAORDINAIRE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Guy
When I was in highschool, the middle school band played this. They blew air through their horns to get the wind sound. They had a kid the bongos. That was wrap. That concert was over. Mind you they played first. That band director had them do that song right. It was magical. I am so proud for the parents of those kids. They got the best show ever from kids. 30 years later I sang this song with my buddy, a professional singer, in my home. Gave us both great joy. We knew every word and phrase. It's a powerful tune. We have to cover this.
Watching your excitement is what makes me remember the 1960-1980 run of incredible artist I grew up on! One hall of famer after another, all great and you will Never see it again !
Christopher Cross was from San Antonio, and Michael McDonald was in the Doobie Bros sang about a neighborhood in San Antonio (China Grove) that's their connection
Written by CC. Jazzy vocal harmonies. CC played a great guitar solo! 🎸 Michael McDonald is a guest for Kenny Loggins in This Is It, Patti LaBelle in On My Own + Toto in I'll Be Over You. MM + KL wrote What a Fool Believes + This Is It. MM + original members of Van Halen wrote I'll Wait. RIP Eddie van Halen. 🎹🎸
You are so cute! I love watching your reactions. This music is all the stuff I grew up with and listened to in my young adulthood. You’re listening to the Best!!
The most ballsy thing a writer does is "no-lyrics." My favorite part too. It's just the punchiness and the harmony. When you're writing, you think, "No I can't write that. it's just jibberish." But then you think, "Yes, it's MUSIC." This is a great song for cruising down the highway, wind in your hair, accelerator to the floor, with the siren and flashing red-and-blue lights fading in the distance as you accelerate.
@@bossfan49 Lol. I’m not sure if I knew that at some point. I love “This is It”, but haven’t bothered to listen to it in a long time. I really liked the live version from that live album that I can’t remember the name of now! Sorry…have a migraine atm.
I just recently subscribed and enjoy your reactions! And I agree, this song and Sailing always puts in the mood to hit the road. Love the way you vibe to the music. If you haven't already, I'd like to see you react to The First Time I Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack(first take). Thanks!
So Michael MacDonald got around back in the day, and he also had some hits with Kenny Loggins (Before Kenny Did Footloose, and Danger Zone from Top Gun, and other hits.) One was This Is It. In this video you don't "see" Mike, but you'll hear him. Kenny Loggins - This Is It : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VS52sEUqxMo.html
I agree you'll probably enjoy "Think Of Laura" even at your young age. I also think you'd probably enjoy Kenny Loggins. You might react to "Meet Me Half Way" or perhaps Melody Gardot - "Baby I'm A Fool".
Kenny Loggins duet with Steve Perry from Journey was a great song. It's called "Don't Fight it". Two fantastic voices with great guitar. Icing on the cake is that they recorded on the soundstage where the sounds for "Raider's of The Lost Ark" were made. They got into the tapes of Indiana Jones whip cracking and copied some into their record. So listen for those whips! 😀
Look at that freaking instrumentation back in the day! Dont get me wrong I can dig 3 or 4 mates creating magic but I just loved the big sound of all the collaboration in these 70-80’s groups. So much going on. I miss those days. Thanks for posting and I listen to this record at least once a month.
Since you like Michael McDonald...... react to his song "TAKE IT TO HEART"! Its a great song! Also, PLEASE DO "SEND HER MY LOVE" BY JOURNEY....... IT IS MY FAVORITE SONG BY MY FAVORITE BAND!! PLEASE PLEASE...... YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT! Try to find the one where they are in concert and STEVE PERRY (BEST SINGER EVER) is in a white jacket! THANKS IN ADVANCE! You are beautiful by the way!:) The song has a special place in my heart because it always reminds me of my first love....... that I lost. It would make my day to see you react to it!:) Again, please find the one that has them in concert and Steve Perry in a white jacket...... Its the best version IMO!:)
Thank you so much for reacting to this. Its funny how you hear a singers voice but when you see them it doesn't match hope you know what I mean lol this is one of those times. I'm grateful for all the hard work you put into your channel with the editing etc. Thank you.
You mentioned Michael McDonald. You should check out some of McDonald's work while singing with the Doobie Brothers. Takin it to the Streets, Minute by Minute and What a Fool Believes are 3 solid suggestions.
It's a kick to me that you go so far back with pop rock music. This one from Christopher Cross was a colossal hit in the late 1970's when soft rock was king of the radio waves. Same with Michael McDonald and them Doobie Bros. Also still much good pop-soul and funk-soul. Can anybody say: "Won't you take me to Funky-TOWWWWN!" I could name dozens more but just check out any top 40 list from 1974-1979. Wish you'd been around then. Life seemed more ... pleasant.
“TO LOVE SOMEBODY” by The Bee Gees Manager of The Bee Gees challenge them to write a “Otis Redding” song after they had just met him. Otis left For the USA before getting to hear the song and died days letter after he had gotten home. The Bee Gees recorded and Released “TO LOVE SOMEBODY” in 1967. Just imagine if Otis had recorded it🤔…
Hi DOR ! I subscribe and share . Good choices . Good reacts .I sure your channel will have more and more subscribers ! So keep your own style ! (France)
Christopher had a string of hits, deservedly so. If you want a love song from him, "Swept Away" is it. Whatever's next from his catalogue will be good. Have a great day.
Arthur’s theme that he did is a total classic. It’s phenomenal. One of the lesser known songs he did which was so beautiful you should do is called think of Laura.
Great song. Been numerous covers of it by the likes of Saxon (rock cover) and by a dance band (can't recall the name) but all are great. It seems to be one of those songs you just can't do a bad version of.
