I’ll jump out the window & say my era the 80’s , we had more respect for rap groups ( the djs & the emcees) because they invented a new voice for young black Americans @ a time when there wasn’t anything that we could identify with, & to have the rap groups stay true to the essence of black & Hispanic culture even while they were making a lot of money & getting a lot of international fame , it made black & Hispanic people feel like I can b successful & stay true to myself because if Gangstarr or Fat Joe can do it so can I - This generation doesn’t seem to appreciate the value of rappers & a lot of it probably has to do with the content & energy these rappers of today b about , their MOSTLY (not all) not conscience or saying anything that’s uplifting blacks or Hispanics & a lot of it is about negativity as opposed to a Brand Nubian album or a Eric B. & Rakim album - so the energy u put out is what u get back -

The difference between now and then is that rappers in the past had developed years of talent and made sure to not get too deep in the streets. They may have had hood dudes around them, but they weren't the ones putting in work because rap was their ticket. For example, Mobb Deep was from the projects but after they got signed, they wasn't robbing dudes or doing drive bys They might have gotten into beefs with other rap crews but had enough sense to know what could be lost. This new generation of rappers is largely talentless, haven't put in the work so there is no appreciation for what it can bring them. They are dropping singles and partial albums that have been haphazardly put together and then back out in the hood, doing the same dumb stuff. The late 80's and early 90's in a lot of cities was way worse than today, however, these new rappers just don't have the common sense to separate themselves from the drama.

Hip hop was A LOT smaller and way more PRIVATE.. how many mfs you never heard of inna city yu never been where a mf was good at rappin and got killed.. that didn’t just start
