In my last video on seeing Godzilla Minus One as a sequel to Oppenheimer, several commenters mentioned they would love to see a Christopher Nolan Godzilla movie get made.
But what would that be like? What core themes and philosophical ideas would he likely explore in telling his own Godzilla story?
To watch my first video on Godzilla Minus One and why it's a masterpiece:
• Godzilla Minus One is ...
Godzilla Minus One is an Oppenheimer Sequel:

I would *KILL* to have Guillermo Del Toro direct an American Godzilla movie! Preferably, his own, untampered vision for Godzilla that’s NOT connected to the MonsterVerse. Even if it was just a one movie deal with Toho, I would absolutely support it 110%! There is no other director in Hollywood who understands or appreciates the monster or kaiju genre the same way Del Toro does! No other director comes even close! If anyone deserves the right to direct an American Godzilla movie, it’s Del Toro, beyond ANY shred of a doubt!

Absolutely agree with you there. He's my NUMERO UNO pick for a G-film. Heck, we could have a series of films, "The Del Toro Era/Series" (like "The Heisei Series" or "Millennium Era" if you will). That would be fricken cool to see. My other picks are John Carpenter, Werner Herzog (b/c of his movies NOSFERATU and INCIDENT AT LOCH NESS), Steven Spielberg and even Ridley Scott would be picks on my list.

When it comes to classic kaiju "man in suit" effects I don't think it has ever gotten better then Shinji Higuchi's VFX work in the Gamera trilogy. So if Nolan ever did make a kaiju flick I think he would be very prudent to bring higuchi on set to help with the miniature set and the costume. And if you're never seen the Gamera trilogy then I'd highly recommend them, the movies are some of the best, most thought provoking, and highly respected films in the genre and I recommend them at every opportunity.

I don’t mean to sound pedantic, but are Nolan’s movies 90% CGI free? You could be right - I honestly don’t know - but part of me feels he uses a bit of CGI to enhance what he’s filmed in camera (which regardless of the percentage is the way to go in my opinion). I don’t think CGI in its self os a bad thing. Denis Villeneuve uses a bit a CGI along with practice sets and it looks amazing. It’s well thought out and constructed and exist for the story instead of exist to draw attention to itself separate from the story.

I love Nolan. But, my dude, this video is absurdly off the rails. Japan could care less about putting the U.S in its film. Minus one beat everyone to the punch. Its almost a best picturesque monster movie. A nolan godzilla movie would be boring. Its hard for a hollywood godzilla to be a villain. Its a Japanese icon and only they should be allowed to portray it as a monster. Americans love godzilla and we dont want to root against it. Bad form.

I would KILL to see a Nolan directed Godzilla or kaiju film that channels Nolan's filmmaking style, while changing it a bit to create a new story that grapples with the existential, moral, and even the spiritual elements of Godzilla. Now Nolan's films have mostly been grounded in reality, not really being too concerned with supernatural, spiritual, or fantastical elements, but i don't think Nolan is against those ideas, it is just that they aren't 100% feasible in a grounded world. I would love to see what he would do with those concepts, translated into a Godzilla film.

This was a very good video. However, I don't know if the movie would be good, because there's no evidence that says that Nolan is a Godzilla fan, and if that were the case, the movie would be bad, like the '98 film. But there was one director that almost directed a Godzilla remake who was perfect for it at the time, Tim Burton. Back when the first American Godzilla movie was in production during the mid 90's, Hollywood hired him, but he declined because of Batman 3. I would have loved to seen that happen, because Burton has stated that he's a fan of the King of the Monsters. So can you, Paul Anleitner, make a video about that please? Or have a friend of yours to make a video about this topic: "Tim Burton's Godzilla" (released during the mid 90's). Because I would definitely watch it.

This is a cute but dumb idea for a video. I'm disappointed since your last Godzilla x Nolan video was so interesting. Godzilla *is* a god (specifically a tatarigami, modelled after Fujin, Yamato no Ori, etc.) & you mentioned that Nolan's films don't literally have deities/spirits/such.

Godzilla is inherently a Japanese narrative, and in my sincere view, Godzilla Minus One even outshines the groundwork laid in the 1954 Gojira. If Christopher Nolan were to helm a Godzilla film, it risks echoing the "superimposed" approach of Raymond Burr, where an outsider intrusively co-opted a compelling story because the original felt too foreign. While Hollywood tends to avoid casting unknown faces, history has proven it can be successful. If Nolan were given a chance, he might introduce an American perspective akin to Burr's character, potentially diluting or whitewashing this Japanese tale, as the Monsterverse has already done. Godzilla Minus One's brilliance lies in its philosophical elements, with the kaiju contributing to more than just a popcorn extravaganza. Instead of delving into Godzilla's origin, Nolan might explore the modern era when Godzilla is a known monster, possibly turning it into an international affair. If he were to tackle a kaiju, his perspective on King Kong might be a better fit. Christopher Nolan indirectly explored the kaiju genre with Oppenheimer, and Godzilla Minus One could be seen as Oppenheimer's guilt personified, echoing his famous quote, "Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds."

They could just get an Japanese American actor, and run with it. One of the earlier comments mentioned of having an American character discovering Godzilla's origin to nuclear bomb testing. Which can then lead to said character feeling dread or even isolation as now he has nobody to fall back on. The real monsters aren't destroying buildings... They're the ones running the show.

@@hungedteddy7971 Monarch: Legacy of Monsters in the Monsterverse on Apple TV Plus already features a half-Japanese family, and, in my honest opinion, the show seems to be merely ticking boxes. The characters lack depth, and our lead is rather annoying. That's my take on it.

I would love to see Godzilla and I’m very curious about the look he would probably go for since he wants things to be a little bit more natural and realistic. He could use some of the traditional I would prefer using the 1954 and making it look more like a dinosaur like and having, some suits or puppets like Jurassic Park the original type level like how they do with the T-Rex like some parts were CGI, and some parts were puppets and I think that would work

I dunno if anyone else has thought of this but I think Nolan could make a great Red Dead movie. Or just a revisionist western in general. I think for one, there would be great use of practical effects, he would definitely have a great composer doing the score, a pace/eschewed sense of time that could really make audiences grip their seats to see what's happening next. Maybe there's a robbery happening similar to the start of the dark knight but in an old western town and everyone has a set job by synchronised watches. Maybe the tension rises when one of the guys is held up or killed. Maybe the plan has to be altered heavily when the law show up after getting wind of the job beforehand. I could absolutely see Nolan doing a western and a bloody good one at that

After watching this video, I actually had thought that Japanese Tokusatsu shows other than Godzilla like Kamen Rider, Ultraman, etc. can also be directed by Nolan if there are any Hollywood adaptations, since many Tokusatsu shows also captured the topics about humanity like in Kamen Rider which focuses on ethics and acceptance of people using the powers originally affiliated with evil for good, and Ultraman focus on humanity's fear and unknown to the outer space and Earth itself and whether should we hope for a hero from unknown origin for protecting humanity in case of disasters. Besides that, the implementation of the 3 stages in human life is quite fitting for many Tokusatsu shows protagonists

It be cool to see the events of post bikini atoll and the us military following up on reports of something sinking their ships and attacking their bases. Kind like how Godzilla minus one the US thinks its a soviet super weapon and there are groups sent to investigate. I would also like to see how the military reacts when they are told to stand down and not to aid the Japanese people because of a potential escalation with the soviets. Maybe a nolan script with a Guillermo del toro colab making the practical affects 😮. Or a Nolan/Toho colab to make a Godzilla minus one sequel. Like i said..... Hans Zimmer Godzilla score 🥹. I would like to hear what menacing music Hans would create to make us terrified of a Godzilla attack.

Christopher Nolan Godzilla film? What would it be like? Easy.. Just have 3 scenes that are overlayed going back and forth for 3hrs.. done You know he doesn't have to do it that way but he can't help it Godzilla attacking Tokyo -cut away- We see Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer letting the oxygen Destroyer weapon fall into the ocean and disintegrate Godzilla -cut away- Godzilla wakes up from being nuke...again. - female protagonist is introduced and lines are acted very well but in terms of writing their mid - back to Godzilla attacking Tokyo tanking missiles -Cillian Murphy crying again Now just add more scenes and keep going back and forth jumping around timelines and make sure you have a very slow Hans Zimmer chords running in the background that crescendo so loudly we can't hear Godzilla's lines. Make sure you use the bathroom before watching because you might miss something since the film will keep cutting away between 3-5 scenes at a time.

@Mangolite
@Mangolite 8 месяцев назад
To better understand the context of Godzilla Minus One, we need to look back at the original 1954 movie Gojira. The story occurs on Odo Island, where Godzilla lived before being mutated. In the film, it was explained that a dinosaur-like creature would come ashore and destroy the villagers. To keep the beast at bay, the people would sacrifice one of their young maidens whenever the monster appeared. This shows that Godzilla is just a wild animal that humans have conditioned. It got worse after being mutated by the nuclear bomb.
@garywillig5143
@garywillig5143 9 месяцев назад
When the Monsterverse inevitably concludes, one thing Legendary or another studio could do is attempt to reach a deal with Toho to have future American Godzilla movies follow in the footsteps of the current Toho movies Shin and Minus One and be more auteur-driven projects where each movie is a self-contained story created by a well-respected director like Nolan. I think Gareth Edwards was trying to go this route in 2014, but there was too much corporate oversight for him to go all the way. A Nolan Godzilla movie would probably be the best possible financial move since his name alone would draw in crowds that would never see even Minus One, let alone dumb schlock like Godzilla vs Kong, plus he'd probably keep the budget below Monsterverse levels. Of course, the odds of him even wanting to do a Godzilla movie are very low.
