While everyone is saying house market will go up (prices), he's betting they will go down. Something like betting in football Brazil vs Nepal, that Nepal will win, and if it wins against all odds (every damn person will bet against Nepal), you get alot of money. In this case he's taking money from financial institutions (banks) to bet against Brazil and everyone's happy to give him (That's called leverage).

Agreed. People think Buffett can predict the market, but he's moving the market. Everybody would be better served just investing in zero cost index funds that track the market. It's all I do, other than a couple fun investments, and I always make money. Always.

This is simply not true. If you believe something is "overvalued" on whatever metric you are using, that is good reason not to buy. That the S&P has gone up in the past several years is simply a function of QE and an expansion of PE multiples than any relative increase in earnings growth. Scion capital still owns significant equity positions, many of these are just not in the USA any more - including AliBaba

got it - from an AI bot: it was a prospectus. the prospectus was information about which securities he wanted to short. Providing a prospectus allows the banks to understand the terms of the Credit Default Swaps (CDS) and the risks involved in the transaction. The prospectus provides detailed information about the underlying assets, terms of the CDS, potential payouts, and other relevant information. This helps the investment banks assess the risks associated with the transaction and determine whether they are willing to enter into the deal with Michael Burry's hedge fund. It's also a regulatory requirement to provide it. In the movie they said 'yes' after reading through the prospectus, or supposedly reading through it completely. But it was implied they weren't thorough and just accepted the offer

@@antongerner5539 Short: betting against the bank's investment. Or against anything (currency etc...) in the banking world. In this movie (and for real) the bank covered the losses of those investments (so they don't lose the bet), otherwise those investments would collapse a year earlier.
