I really want a Stylus, but I am not sure if I will dislike going from a 140/160mm full sus bike to a hardtail as my only bike. I just love the way they look.
Dont worry, Commencal better choice, this is just a nice marketing STEEL frame, nice nice but nothing new under the sun in hardtails, 2 angel, and cahin stay, maybe reach, yeah and weight metters so man go for aluminium we living in 2019 not in 1998 :D.
@@szabobalazs11 weight doesn't matter, and don't say these are just for the sake of steel they are made from a really nice material with really good geometry. those are the only two things you can't change. steel is still relevant for those that want it, and mike clearly does want it. also, learn how to spell.
I am in love with the Stylus - I came so close to buying one this spring. Ended up going for a 2018 Norco Torrent HT1 because of the spec on it and a superb price. (I don't like finicky 12 speed drivetrains, nor guides) That said, the colours of the steel -especially that 2019 blue- make me want a second hardtail to choose from! Also, it should be mentioned that the only difference from 2018 to 2019 models of the Stylus is a slightly reduced seat tube hight on the new model.
How do you like the Torrent HT so far? I have considered it but never had a chance to throw a leg over one. Also looking at BigHonzo and few other hardtails
The Torrent is so much fun. I've left the tubes in it before going tubeless and have not punctured yet even at 15psi. I ride in Kamloops so it's pretty rough stuff most of the time. My only complaint is that the stock saddle is too wide for my legs (I'm kind of small) other than that the build is awesome! They aren't making them for 2019 though ☹️ maybe it has been discontinued. My second choice would be the chromag, third is the Trek Stache
I have the wideangle, which is the same bike but a little lighter and with a longer seat tube. The bike is really fun and feels like a mountain dirt jumper. It's also true, there's almost no vribration, the rise is really fucking smooth.
Nice review. Last summer I had a bad crash and broke my back a bit. I want to get some spine protection before riding again. Any advise on brands and models of spine protection. I am not doing downhill mostly technical trail riding with a lot of rock. thanks
Came across a new medium 2019 Stylus stealth black frame for half price so naturally I had to pull the trigger. At 5'8" it puts on the cusp of a medium and M/L. I hope the smaller size works out for me.
That bike has very similar geometry to the RSD Middle Child, which I own, only it's a 29er or 27.5 plus bike. I guess it's more like the Rootdown. It's sick, as is this bike....I'd like to give one a rip.
Too bad that GT red is no longer available! Got replaced with some old man 'crimson' color. I like bright but the only bright option now is blue/pink. :(
Wow! You're edit is right on Time. I'm planning to Buy a New bike and really love the Chromag Brand. For the fit, how Tall are you? Not sure between the small or medium. And Do you miss the rear suspension on this bike or the fun factor eliminate the need? Not sure to leave the full sus for a hardtail but Everybody's Who rides Chromag's bike Seem to not Bother...
Thanks! I'm 5'7" and the medium fit perfectly. I'm not sure I could personally give up the full suspension, but if I had to this would be the bike I would go to! The hardtail aspect definitely adds new level of playfulness to the ride not found in full suspension. Not to mention the reliability added by removing the rear shock and links. Overall I think this bike would make a great do it all bicycle!
Both are sweet bikes! But both are intended for different riding styles, if you live in an area with steep gnarly terrain the Chromag would be my recommendation!
From my experience it's all about riding style. I own an Ragley Bigwig and have ridden a Rootdown several times around my local Bellingham trails . They are both very capable bikes (both had a 160mm Fox36 and dual-ply DH race tires), But they excel at different things. The Rootdown is very playful and easy to get on the rear wheel due to the short chainstays (415mm), but at higher speeds and on the really seep stuff, the front end does't feel as planted and the bike feels a little less stable. The Bigwig, on the other hand is great at holding insane speed and remaining composed (for a hardtail). But is less fun at slower speeds and is a little more cumbersome going up steep switchbacks. This is probably due to the longer stays (435mm), longer wheelbase (1241mm in XL) and bigger bb drop (-65mm). Both bikes work great, and I wouldn't hesitate to take ether one on most trails. However, I feel that they are aimed at different rider styles. I only have experience with these models, but I hope this helped. P.S. As a bike mechanic, I have to give Ragley some brownie points for using the better BB standard, BSA is the obvious choice for muddy/rainy conditions.
Are you riding small or medium in this video? I am 5'6" and chromag has the size small stylus on sale for 600CAD. Whereas a medium new frame is 870CAD. Reach is 411mm for small which is fine but it has a crazy short 330mm seat tube. Thoughts?

why tubes on rear triangle dont grab top tube of front triangle ? and also everybody knows that this piece near the BB and sproket easy to broke...Chromag is cool company, but I expect more from them
Yeg Mtb ...Yes! All jokes aside that actually sounds like a great idea although it would require a fresh design to work the geometry properly. All I have been thinking since getting into MTB is to make it as BMX as possible. Shredding fun...that’s what bikes are all about. The skill in riding a bike is to dance it through the terrain, not plough it like some kind of blockhead. Full suspension doesn’t even get a look in...hard tails only and I still really love the handling of 26 wheels...bring them back! Stoked on the design ethos of this bike! 😊🤙
