Jaco was really playing well here, I would have killed to see him live. My dad just passed away two weeks ago, he has told me on a numerous occasions how amazing and life changing it was to see Jaco live (1978? with WR). RIP to two of the best bass players I know.

The fact that any serious bass player feels the need to prove themselves by covering a Jaco composition says it all about his legacy.

Jaco's interpretation of chromatical fantasy was life changing. I was 13 back then and thanks to jaco I discovered classical music. I love Jaco, rest in peace Boss!

Well, seeing that a lot of people seem to be quite preocupied about Jaco's mental state and don't mind speculating as to how he might be feeling or what drugs (prescription or not) he may have taken, etc...To them I'd like to say just one thing: Jaco's worse was still better than almost anybody else's best... Having said all that, on this video he sounds great to me. The audience only seems to get into it at the end which is a bit of a shame.

It's great to relate to other Jaco fans. I am appalled at the number of BASS GUITAR PLAYERS I've met who know nothing about Jaco. I feel that he contributed so much to the instrument and the way it is approached that EVERY BASS GUITAR PLAYER should know Jaco's work.

Jaco is a legendary artist! I really am influenced by him even as a guitarist. I am so blessed and thankful to be named after him. It’s beautiful how his legacy lives on even after all this time. He really is the greatest musician of all time. I love every song by him.

I think what some critics mean when they say "Hendrix of Bass" They are referring him being such a pioneer of the instrument in that he showed the masses what is possible on his particular instrument and wrote such unbelievable compositions on the instrument. Though gatton in such an unsung master and to me one of the baddest ever to pick up the guitar.

The Master! Today there are many incredible players....but to me none of them have the musical sensibility that Jaco had...it's something that you have (or not have) in your soul, not in your fingers..
@dudeman5303

Well the difference is players today can play similar to jaco, but they didnt revolutionize music like jaco. There is a big difference. We have great players with technical chops, but we dont have people who innovate, music has been in a stale spot for the last 20-25 years.

I am spending an afternoon with Jaco thanks to the beauty of youtube. Compared to other performances I've seen of Jaco, it seems he may have been on lithium by this time. His demeanor is subdued but I agree with those who praise his playing on this video. Jaco could play better than ANYONE when he was of the mind to do so.

Notice Jaco used only finger style and harmonics for the most part and achieved this level of genius as a solo bassist. Now bassists cant get enough of themselves over-complicating every piece trying to show off every bass technique known to man in one melody or riff lol.

he is decidedly NOT the hendrix of bass. if he can be compared to anyone, the danny gatton of bass would be more appropriate. hendrix, while great, did not have this level of technical virtuosity.

@langerzoriginal is it true that he took the frets out of a fender jazz bass, and went on from there?
@yoodig1202
@yoodig1202 15 лет назад
This is later stuff for him, that bass is one that he got after he blew it all up his nose. This is by no means his best playing. there's before '79 and after '79. After '79 there's a steady decay, but that's just a part of the music. He didn't have much time after this.

He's absolutely right. Not only did he play other basses after Doom was lost (sometime after recording Mood Swings), but this isn't even the bass itself, unless he decided to switch the pickup covers out for white plastic- And, being that he is Jaco, you don't trust that he could make someone else's bass sound the way he wanted it to? There were certainly other fretless Jazz basses around; have been since at least '70. Someone of your claimed knowledge and devotion surely ought to realize this.

sorry. I'm just getting in to Jaco. I don't own that album, so I didn't mean to sound like a jerk or anything. my apologies. I wasn't aware that he covered "Blackbird" on word of mouth. I thought it was just an intro he used to this song this one time, not as a combination of his version of "Blackbird" and Chromatic Fantasy.

Stanley Clarke is a master of the acoustic bass. On the electric bass he shouldn't be considered as an innovator anymore as his playing is very repetitive and relies on a few fast patterns ALL THE TIME.
