A quick note on the two-sided kalimba -- I've got a Tracey double sided, and I don't use my index fingers to play the rear ones. I use my middle fingers. My index fingers are used to hold the instrument by the sides. Also, you can make it easier to play and "feel" around which tines you need to pluck on the back by removing the tines that are repeated on the front of the kalimba. The front is in C Major, and the back in B Major, so the Es and the Bs -- excepting the lowest B -- are on both sides. Pull all of the E and B tines off the back -- with the exception of the very lowest since you don't have that one on the front -- and you get spaces between the tines on the back that enable you to orient yourself. (I also kept the very highest B tine on the back since that made the B tine on the front a little more resonant.) So 1) use your middle fingers to pluck the tines on the back and 2) remove the repeated tines from the back, except the very lowest B. Boom, problems solved. :-) Bonus is that you can now play almost all Baroque flute repertoire and a lot of the modern intermediate level stuff as well. I'm working on Bach's partita in A minor at the moment on mine.

I also play that instrument and I agree with you on using the middle fingers, although I often use my middle and index fingers when playing chords like Bm. I opted to keep the redundant tines. Although I understand why people remove them, I’m glad I kept them. My fingers were eventually able to navigate the back side and now I feel like I just have more options with the redundant tines. For chromatic runs up I will use the Bs and Es on the front and then when moving down I will use the Bs and Es on the back. I’ve got a couple unison notes which is nice. The E chord is just one simple swipe with my finger. Same for the B chord. Anyway, cheers.

After a week of hyperfixation and exhausting Reddit, websites, and even RU-vid I finally found your video. The video I needed to compare the 34 Key from Chill Angels and Seeds more thoroughly. The Chill Angels seller did a comparison on their own account, but was looking for more in depth info on ease of tuning it since everyone has been vague so far.

I just got the Moozica keyboard-layout kalimba, and my word. It is so fantastically playable. I don't know why there aren't more lamellophones with a keyboard layout in general since it makes immediate sense for any keyboard player with little learning curve.

My mom got me a kalimba for a surprise for helping her do some things. I didn't do much with it at first because it was so foreign to me. But after a about 3-4 months I started messing with it. And I can't look at it when I play. I feel what happens. It completely takes me away from where I am and I get in like a trance when I play. I don't know where it comes from I just play it. Sometimes I play it for hrs and don't even know it. I think I I am going to get a seeds kalimba but I would like to add some pick ups to it and have the switches for different electric effects on the back of it. Like guitar effects peddle but for the fingers on the back side. Think it would be interesting to see what could come from that concept.

HI Molly - Thanks for your awesome channel - i am a beginning piano player and beginning kalimba player. I want to get a chromatic kalimba that is set up like a piano and I watched your video on the Bugs Gear Kalimba - I really like that one but I am hoping to find one that may have a richer tone and a wider space between the tines so I can play chords more easily - I am willing to pay more - do you have any suggestions?

Question … Chill Angels, who has the ECO Chromatic (34 keys) also has 34 keys in B and C … If one gets both the B and C scale, is there any advantage to also purchasing the Chromatic??

Molly, have you had any problems with the Bigs Gear going out of tune? From what I understand, the tines are cut out of one piece of metal and are not tuneable. This is fine if the kalimba stays in tune. Have you had any problems?
@MusicalMollyKhan
@MusicalMollyKhan 2 года назад
Great question! I have not had it go out of tune because the tines are made to be sort of fused in place rather than tunable 😊

@@MusicalMollyKhanI've been trying to buy an Angel Chills kalimba. I followed links from the maker's RU-vid videos and the website, and about 2 years ago she just goes off the map. I think they are not made any more. If you find out otherwise, please tell us!

I love my Seeds Kalimba. I play classical, Celtic and pop music and hymns on it. I’m really glad I saw it on your channel. The range is great. Do you ever write your own Kalimba arrangements with the numeric notation? I have been handwriting mine, but my handwriting is abominable. I’d like to have a way to type up the arrangements so I can share them (all public domain music), but haven’t figured out how to yet. I couldn’t find a preexisting font for Word. Do you know of anything?
@MusicalMollyKhan
@MusicalMollyKhan 2 года назад
That sounds like such an amazing variety! I'm afraid I don't write any of the number notation.. I learned to read standard music so I'm much more comfortable with that! 😊

i wanted to get the seeds kalimba but I saw lots of reviews saying that it goes out of tune really quickly and some notes are really hard to tune, what do you think about that?

I own several kalimbas. Many dead tines can be adjusted to sound less thunky. I think some kalimba sellers tune their instruments high to sound more chime-/music box-like. Once that is corrected, the highest keys sound more bright/resonant. Also, plucking the tines properly can improve tone. Personally, I don't find any kalimba more difficult than another, and I consider myself a beginner at the instrument. Playing well takes time, practice and developing muscle memory. You will get used to any instrument you play with consistency. While the laughter is indeed cute, it's also distracting. You seem very nervous.

How can you review this stuff being completely incompetent in? You don't even know how to hold the two-sided chromatic kalimba in your hands. The tines on the bottom side are taken not with the index fingers, but with the middle ones. Using additional fingers to play music fast - it's a bullshit! Among the main cons: one-sided chromatic kalimba is almost unusable to play more or less advanced music, e.g. with jazz chords, when you had to hold the instrument by both hands, not to put it on your knees or table. As to lamellaphones with piano-like layout, hardly worth calling them kalimbas at all. Etc., etc, I can continue indefinitely... Nothing personal, just don't like dabbler bloggers as a phenomenon... ;) Good luck!

If you have any understanding of music theory, you modify and create chords that will fit your instrument and still work within the concept of the piece.
