Chromatic scale instructions for the saxophone
And we are going on with another exercise. This a quite a tough one. It's probably going to take you a while to do this,. but it's the most important exercise I think you'll ever do on the sax. You see, it's very useful at this point to start to develop a good mental picture of the saxophone in your head. When you look at the saxophone you probably still feel some confusion as to:" which notes are located where". When you look at a piano. You can see all the notes neatly lined up next to each other form low to high. On the saxophone this isn't so easy, because you can't see the order of the notes on the saxophone with your eyes. If I was to say to you:" Play an F, and now play the note that's 6 notes above that". If you were playing piano you could just count up 6 keys and you would have found it, but that's not so easy on the saxophone. If you can create the ability to see the order of all the saxophone notes in your head, then you make things much easier for yourself in the long run. So we are going to have to create a good mental image of the saxophone notes, and using this you are going to get all the notes into your fingers.
How do we do this? Well, I also hit this problem of course, and it's the reason why I ended up creating the piano chart. What it does is quite simple. It shows you the order of the saxophones notes exactly as on a piano.
Now all you have to do for this exercise is play all of them. Like a scale. From the lowest note (the Bb3) all the way up to the C#6. Feel free to try and go up even higher if you can, but it's ok to save that for a little later.
Once you have done this for a while (2 weeks or so) you will start to find that you begin to see the saxophone as a whole in your mind. You will be able to locate every note easily and you will be able to count up and down the range. It's the foundation for everything else. So take all the time you need to practice this until you can play it and name the notes almost without thinking about it.
Now I will go into this more later, but while you're doing this exercise realize and remember one thing. The white notes on the piano chart are the "whole" notes and the black notes are the "half" notes. This will become important later so keep it in mind while you practice.

Bro I am a true beginner and have been learning on you tube. I love your finger chart and I can't wit to try this. Your lessons are amazing. My cousin gave me his old 1932 Conn Transitional Tenor that I had reconditioned. The few that have played it said it is a beast. I can't wait to get going as I had lost interest because I couldn't see keys and what the hell was going on. Thanks for the great lesson. D.O in Denver

Thank you! I'm an absolute beginner on sax after years of trying to learn the guitar but just never falling in love with it. I'm still squeaking and having a hard time playing the low notes in particular but I know It's possible. I absolutely love the way all the valves and levers work on the sax. It's like a Doctor Seuss creation haha. I can't wait to be able to write my own music. No constant tuning or messing with cords and amps or worrying about where I'll get electricity. Easy to throw in the car and go. I need a mute, though. I really just need a dedicated practice room that's well insulated so I don't drive my wife and pets crazy.

Absolutely love this video of yours. Thanks for sharing the Chromatic Scale...just asking...when you play the Low B and Low C#, your fingering diagram for the pinky differs from the pinky key that you are actually pressing. For. eg. for the Low B your diagram shows the outer pinky key to be pressed however when you physically show it you are pressing the inner pinky key and it's vice versa for the Low C# key...perhaps I may be wrong but you can please check.

There's a nice repair shop about 3 hrs away from Chicago in Wisconsin. Meyers Band instrument in Maiden Rock, WI. Talk to Greg (he is bonebone9 on eBay). Good guy. Fair. Reliable. Sells very nice quality stuff. I bought a Yamaha YAS-23 in 7.5 or an 8 out of 10 condition (rare find). It's a student horn, my particular one made in the late 80's. Yamaha is not that great on record keeping, tho. They made the YAS-23 from.1980-to 2000 or 2001. That's an alto. A great condition one you'll see asking 700.00+ USD or so, but be patient. You can get a real nice one for 5 or 600.00. I don't try to squueze them, just ask nicely what offer they'd like to get.

Andreas Hoppe alto / tenor should be good for beginner, don't know about sopran though since it's shape is entirely different. alto relies more on embouchure technique but requires less air compared to tenor. i personally just started picking up an alto sax and it's quite easy to learn with no experience of wind instrument. hope it helps!

Thank you very much for sharing this most awesome information. The up close fingerings and diagrams are a bonus to learning. You are greatly appreciated and a awesome teacher.

A# you say is A with the addition of the bottom right hand palm note, but the diagram is showing the top right hand palm note. Am I right in guessing that the diagram is incorrect.

is it necessary to know how to read notes? or is it for those who've had years of experience?

Amazing. So simple and yet so thorough. You make it look easy and I know over time it will be. Thank you, so far this is the best video I have seen for this type of exercise on the sax.

I have just started learning the saxophone. I had a question which may sound stupid to a professional however, for me as a novice, it seems relevant. My question was if I master the Chromatic Scale and am able to play all the keys in different key patterns, why do I need to learn the scales? Can I not just read musical notes and play any song?
