Cyndi Lauper's was itself a remake of one from 1979 I believe. The true original was a sexist mess that was basically a rich boy being told find a wife who is stupid. I don't remember the exact context of the original.

I love the original Cyndy Lauper version because of how genuinely upbeat and carefree it is, but I love this too, in a different way though. It's got such an hypnotic sadness to it, sort of like a bluesy escapism in an attempt to shrug off some deep trauma.

Just heard this for the first time watching Stumptown and loved it. I love how its seemingly the opposite vibe of the original, not the rebellious nature of the OG but more like a resigned to a particular fate. An absolutely beautiful version
