Most of us have wondered if our laptops could be more helpful, and anyone who’s tried Artificial Intelligence tools like Chat GPT knows they can be clunky to access. What if you could skip going to third-party websites and still get all of that AI juice right at your fingertips, right where you’re working? Writing help inside your Doc. Photoshopping smarts right on screen? Or an assistant that can generate a spreadsheet, list or roundup of research without you ever needing to hunt the web. That's the premise of Google’s new lineup of Chromebooks that have a whole host of helpful features built-in: Meet the new Chromebook Plus laptops.

What is a Chromebook & how does it compare to Chromebook Plus?
In a nutshell a Chromebook has been a way to get a cheap laptop that can manage simply the basic tasks many of us do you like email, and online surfing. They have tended to have slower processors, less memory, and less local storage than other laptops, so much of what they do is online-based by design.
What makes a Chromebook a Chromebook Plus?
The new Chromebook Plus takes the low cost idea, and turns it on its head, since it offers way more in terms of specs and speed, and keeps the price extremely low.
Now with double the performance, best-in-price screens and cameras, as well as the standard built-in Google apps plus all new and powerful AI capabilities, Chromebook Plus is a new take on hardware performance with powerful software apps and tools. All at a rather startling starting price of $399US.
Offline File Sync
One of the complaints about the Chromebook experience has been that you don't have access to files if you're not online. Google addresses this to some extent with a feature called offline file sync. When you're setting up your Chromebook, or after the fact, you can choose which files to keep locally on your device so they are always accessible to you. Even without an Internet connection.
Video calling enhancements at system level
With Chromebook Plus you now get easy access to things like muting, and camera on/off, right on the lower navigation bar. Plus there's also options for background blurring as well as noise cancelling for busy environments and even a toggle to use AI to improve your lighting.
Adobe Express with AI
Easy-access AI assistance is one of the biggest innovations in laptop technology in … decades. And in the Chromebook Plus, one of the most notable ways to see it in action is to try out Adobe’s Creative Cloud apps including the on-device Adobe Express. You can design content like flyers, TikToks and resumes and get easy AI assistance thanks to what Adobe calls Firefly.

Overall review: ASUS Google Chromebook Plus
Overall, it’s been quite a while since I've been hands-on with a Chromebook, and I have to say there's been a lot of significant changes now that we have Chromebook Plus. I think Google has been listening to consumer complaints about these devices and is doing its absolute best to address those while still keeping the laptop simple, uncomplicated and affordable.
On the Pro side, you’re getting double everything now- twice the processing power, twice the speed, double the memory, and twice the resolution for a clearer screen over older Chromebooks. The addition of the Adobe Creative Cloud suite on the web is significant and actually goes a long way towards making this device even more useful.
It’s easy to use, boot up fast and easy to configure and personalize. I’m also excited for the arrival of the built-in AI writing assistant.
When it comes to the cons, your biggest issues might be the things that make a Chromebook a Chromebook; the fact you’ll need to prep for going offline, and understanding that some features are limited if you’re off Wi-Fi… but really, how often are we off or far from Wi-Fi nowadays?
To be clear, a Chromebook is not yet a total Windows or Apple replacement. And it can't be the machine that holds thousands of files ready at the click of a trackpad.
But I have to say with what you CAN do with a Chromebook Plus, and the host of improvements made is impressive. If you’re the type of person who keeps minimal files, uses Gmail, and uses a laptop for personal email and surfing the web, and the odd creative project, this is an ideal machine, since it can now also give you access to AI tools to help, and a portal to more creative platforms like Lumafusion Editor and Adobe that can make your Chromebook Plus even more useful than you’d think.

Beautifully concise and clear review, thanks. The 10 year software upgrades is a significant improvement. Now I just need to decide which Chromebook Plus to get.

Ive used Chromebook since 2013!. Now I have a very nice chromebook with aluminium chassi, 14" ips full HD touchscreen, 8GB ram, and 128GB SSD and backlit keyboard, and a gorillaglass touchpad. Got it for $299 :) . I have Linux enabled on the machine so I use a lot of Linux software, like Visual Studio code, Audacity, Arduino IDE, and a lot of other apps. I also do a lot of programming on the machine. Its not limited to webapps that many people think. Its a machine for normal users AND more experienced users with the linux part. You can also use Android apps, but i usually skip them.

Chromebooks are ten times better with the addition of chromebook plus. Just a few years ago they were good at only surfing the net. I imagine a lot of people will prefer Chrome over Windows I think Windows needs to add in built in security otherwise I think Chrome is the future.

Hi Erin, I was very interested in watching this because I have an HP Chromebook w/ a 12" screen, and an attached HP 20" monitor. The Chrome OS was recently updated to what Google calls Version 117, and my device will continue to get updates until June 2029. Chromebooks meet my needs perfectly as I am a consumer, not a creator of content. After watching this very informative review my conclusion is that I can forego getting a "Plus". Thank you! I don't understand why people still talk about the "offline" issue of Chromebooks. You said it yourself, today, there's no way you can't access the web, even if it's only tethering through your phone. And more on that, see how people on Windows or Mac react when the web is down, they pretend not to be able to work as well. Plus, there are more ways to access local and numerous files on ChromeOS, like SD cards, external drives or a NAS. Then, you can install a ton of Android or Linux apps to work locally without any connection required. And if you take a machine with a powerful enough CPU, you can do all that is done on other OSes. That I do on a daily basis. Plus they are more secure, faster and immensely more simple than other OS on the same power level. You should try and dig a little more by really using one, they are awesome.

With my chromebook I use chrome's remote desktop to connect to my PC at home that has any tools that my chromebook can't do nor that have online solutions for. Makes even using a cheap CB a great option. Just remote connect to my home machine when needed. Extra bonus about Chrome's remote connection is that it survives full reboots, meaning if you are on the road and your PC (or Mac) is forced to update and restart you can still connect to it even if you have not logged into it at home. Set your bios settings to power the machine on whenever it detects power is available and even if the power at home goes out then comes back on you can still get to everything you need. Love the Chromebook!

That's quite the hike from USD to CAD! Tough once you get say an iPad and a keyboard for it you're likely over the $699 CAD. But how useful will either device be in ten years? I guess we will have to wait and see!

Got mine yesterday and am really happy with it. The only thing, it does not have background light for the keyboard. Called Asus and had the feeling they were not pretty sure, whether it is like that or if it is a problem with the device. They came up with the answer, that the white version has it, the grey one doesn't. (I have a grey one). Can anyone confirm that it is ok, that my chromebook does not have background light for the keyboard? Thanks a lot.

Great presentation. One quick question. I am looking at Chromebook Plus but max screen size of 13inch. I see most of them start at 14 inch screen size. Is that a requirement from google or just that it has not yet come on smaller size Chromebook. Thank you.

I returned the Asus Chromebook Plus CX34. It's a laptop that I tried to use on my lap wearing shorts. The sharp edge, corners, protrusions made it painful. Reviews should include lap use. That doesn't require Artificial Intelligence.

Great if you have a limited set of requirements. Not to be confused with a "real" laptop (forget about using Office type applications, gaming, or any other MacOS or Windows applications). Oh and given its by Google, no doubt built in data harvesting.

You are so false in your comment! I can do all my work including Office on a Chromebook. Especially with the new OneDrive integration in the files app! I work in IT and Microsoft is focusing so much on web based technologies. For example the Office 365 app you can install on Chrome OS to open it in its own window and use it as a default app to be able to open Office documents directly. The way people get work done has changed drastically in the last few years moving to cloud based solutions that work on any platform. Especially when it comes to real time collaboration and editing. If you use Android the native integration between Chrome OS and Android is unmatched on Windows or Mac. Like all the very handy features Phone Hub has to offer for example or native Nearby share built in! I am sick of this mentality coming from people who don't know what it is actually like to use a Chrome OS Laptop and what their capabilities are. There are also more and more Chrome OS optimized Android Apps being released. Like LumaFusion to be able to create and edit videos with a surprising amount of features.

Chromebooks' strength is also their biggest flaw. Being so focused on online and cloud, not only it's technically more constraining because one always need a decent and safe connection, but it also highlights the "drug dealer mentality" of offering cheap stuff just to make you buy more later.

Maybe because I am living in a soyoucalled 3th world country, we have internet everywhere, and always 30mb/s plus, seems enough for running your daily operations everywhere you have a 4G or wifi.. And its easier to have guaranteed internet than electricity. So i dont see the point. Another thing is that you have all business critical data available on your phone and on the laptop. When you lose your laptop, people cant access your data, as you can easely on a windows laptop or even a macbook. I dont need to wait for updates, i open the chromebook and work on the newest version, the updates mostly increase the performance of the chromebook, not as microsoft it gets slower over time... Wane install apps.. Just use the linux what comes with a chromebook.

A lot of newer Chromebooks can run a proper Linux though. It’s not easy to install though as Google earns money from the data harvesting and would rather keep it that way.

For most people, Chromebooks are a much simpler alternative to Windows and MacBook issues. You get to focus on what you're trying to do, rather than deal with malware, software installations, viruses when you install something wrong by mistake, hours-long system updates, etc.

A limited Chromebook for 400 usd? No thank u, for that price and getting a good deal I can find myself a great Windows machine that I can use offline, install any x64 software and also upgrade in the future regarding RAM and Storage. So, no thank u.

You take want to suffer all the Windows issues, rather than the simplicity of ChromeOS for 99% of daily work?
