Here's my step by step process for chroming photoetch scripts for model cars. This video assumes that you will sand off molded-in kit detail that you intend to replace with photoetch. I'll link to places where the materials I use can be found, but I can't guarantee they'll be in stock.

Mr hobby R metal primer is also available as a liquid brush on in a bottle. Like the tamiya glues and mr hobby model glues glass bottle instead of a spray can for those interested.

Lots of extra work there, but looks great.. I've seen guys using GARBAGE paint like Rust-Oleum and THINK it looks good, but realistically looks like the contents of a litter box.. In 57 years I've NEVER seen Rust-Oleum paint dry hard enough to work with on models.. But Hey! Everyone has their own opinion and goals for QUALITY.. Great video.. I HATE PHOTO ETCH, BUT I still use it too much 🤣👍🇺🇸

This was a great video, learned a lot, and actually I have a couple of photo etch sheets for 67-68 Camaros. Was intimated to use them, but now I’m not..thank you Frank, you did a great job with this one….as usual! 😊

I always get a great laugh when I watch Frank. I have never thought of using chrome on the PE parts. Thats a good idea. I am gonna give that a try.

You can polish the fret easier if you put a loop of tape on the back, to hold onto. Then you can safely polish front face in a polishing cloth or compound on wax paper attached to a tavle top. Both sides are flat so no snags during polishing. If you don't like superglue, you can attach the parts with clear varnish which is less stressful to work with.

Great video! I think I'd have it just polished it and stuck on the model in about 20 minutes though. All the bikini moms would approve and have sent pix. Probably not. 🤣

I like to nickel plate them then use a buffing wheel and some polishing compound to bring out the shine .

Interesting technique Frank. I may have try this on the scripts to give a more roundish script like look. Working with some on my Chevelle. Love P/E

I’m really happy with GaiaNotes on P/E (I love P/E too!), but the more I delve into Revell Chrom, the more I like it. I just released a video tonight with some surprising results about my old method on kit part rechroming and the one I’m likely going to use going forward.

@FranksModelWorks Right on, I'll have to check it out, when I get some time. I've always used kit chrome with light layer of Tamiya smoke. Doesn't help with those molded line on the corners of bumpers though. Thanks Frank.

Frank, be honest. You used to watch Norm Abram on New Yankee Workshop, and remember from it, above all else ..... his "measure twice, cut once" line. "Don't commit .... test first" maybe evolved from that precaution, and both lines are good recommendations to remember. 😄 This was a great video! Never a dull moment! I've been curious about photo-etch stuff. I'm an old dog nearing 70 in people years, trying to learn new tricks. Have been away from the hobby about 55 years, retired now and looking to restart. I've already subscribed, and will be coming back to watch more. Thanks for the humor, too.

My only real issue with photo etch (other than getting it to stick without destroying my paint, or hanging on something and ripping off) is spending nearly a kit's worth of money on a photoetch set only to find that I used a whole 3 parts off it. However, I like to use a rotary tool and tamiya polish with a very light touch. For utilitarian things like this I like using 3M painters tape as it's cheaper than the Tamiya tape. I keep my tamiya tape for paint masking. I spend money where it counts, and pinch pennys where it don't ya know :) Burbanks house of hobbies, and usagundamstore carry the metal primer, they are of course out of stock as usual. It seems like Mr hobby stuff hits U.S. stores in waves. Wow with the spray pattern on the Revell chrome you may as well be throwing dollars out the window every time you press the button.

Hi Frank, I love your content. I guess I'm the only guy left on the planet that is reluctant to lay out the kinda bucks they want for the small can of the Revell chrome spray. Having said that, you said that you thought that the results on plastic were pretty good. You also said that it tends to spray heavy out of the can. Of course I'm paraphrasing here but, it would be nice to see the results of the revell decanted. Hint, hint. Just a thought for a video. Thanks, Stephen Tabor from Hawaii Island.
@FranksModelWorks
@FranksModelWorks 19 дней назад
I would, but that stuff comes out so heavy, and the nozzle itself doesn’t lend itself to decanting. I’d waste half the $30 can to trying.

Great video. I was wondering if you would be able to do a how to video on thining paints and clears. I purchased some splash paints and I like how they are already thinned . I’m stuck on how I should thin the clear. Says 3:1 ratio for mixing clear. What type of tools would you recommend in getting that 3:1 ratio correct. Thank you for your input.
@FranksModelWorks
@FranksModelWorks 16 дней назад
I think the 3:1 ratio you might be referring to is Clear to Catalyst if it’s Splash Paints 2K Urethane Clear. If you’re using 2K Clear, Splash sells a Urethane Grade Lacquer thinner. First you’ll mix the 3:1 ratio of Clear to Catalyst, and then you’ll add thinner to that mixture. For example, If you mix up 10ml of Clear/Catalyst, 7.5 ml will be Clear, 2.5ml will be catalyst. Then, you have 10ml of the Clear/Catalyst mix. To that, you can add 5ml of thinner. For any type of paint or clearcoat mixing I’d recommend graduated medicine cups and pipettes. They’re both available on Amazon and are indispensable consumables when airbrushing. These are the cups a.co/d/iYhp8kV And these are the pipettes a.co/d/dS6U5KR
@FranksModelWorks
@FranksModelWorks 16 дней назад
I also did a full three part airbrushing series. I think you’ll find the first and second video of the series most useful for the question you asked. Here’s a link. ru-vid.com/group/PL_H4DId1pw_lFP0hZHbB_0Uk6UROPSlsu&si=meZzSWUlosTv3mY9
