it's not the guitar's fault by the way because the guitar dude has a cord speaker that's why it's freakin' loud but i think they should've given that flute guy a mic so that we can hear the music of flute too but oh well
I like the guitar, gives the performance a lot of funk!!! Those that are hatin' on the guitar player, QUIT HATIN'!!! This is a free country for the performers!!! So stop hatin' on the guitar player!!!!!!
When the tempo kicks up, I love the concentration and expression. Hiroaki Yura's solo helped them a whole lot. In my opinion, having the flute so low and showing such a contrast helps the performance. Many of you said his solo was amazing and it indeed was; it was emphasized as well by the extreme change in the mood. Peaceful to kickass.
As a flautist, that Guitar covered the melody. Also, the funny irony is the guy next to the soloist, he looked mad. But hey, not everyone is ever good. (Song was rated at 4, needs to fix the guitar microphone.)
Yeah, hearing nothing but that guitar pissed me off. Thank God you can hear the violins over the guitar, though. To me, those are what make this song, even though the flute is a huge part, too.
The accelerated music tempo ruined the performance a little. If they kept the rythym of the original song it would be better. By the way...what the hell with the violin guy! He owned!
1:49 best part for me, always came back just to hear that part, the background drum thing nicely done, the rest not so good, especially the over loud guitar
@Lochsabre Definitley the orchestra. Ive seen them again since and there are sections that are too loud and too quiet. The best orchestra I saw was Distant Worlds FF orchestra. They were international, whilst this is a local group in Sydney.
Instead of certain little details... THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL!!!!! these songs form part of me.... for many things. i don´t know what more to say.... Por que no haran conciertos como este en Mexico??? (mi pais)... y nos tenemos que conformar con mierdeton y Mierdalnses porquerias???
A bit sad to hear how much the guitar overpowered the song. The flute solo was almost not even there when it was a much more important part of the piece at that stage than the guitar.
@TacoManTuesday fuckin yeah dude, all the kids these days care about are GRAPHICS GRAPHICS. I want to see every last ripple in the dirt, music and storyline? That's last in their head.
That's probably the only thing that's wrong with this. The intro flute solo should've been a lot louder. Either that, or the guitar could've backed off a bit, in my opinion.
I agree the guitar sounds too loud, but I think the microphone was just too close to the guitar player. If you were in the audience, I'm sure it would sound just right.
@turtleboat It's not really "rushed". It's about the same speed as the original piece in the game and yes, it is fast. It changes paces at different times.
yes, i love this song. but they didnt mic the flautist, yet amplified the guitarist which overpowers literally everything else in the peice. its supposed to be an accent, not the driving force of the song. in fact in the original you can barely hear the guitar after the song intensifies, the violins/flute should drive the song. so in the end, the guitar undoubtably takes ALOT away from this otherwise decent performance. this song also sounds better on a smaller ensemble IMO.
it is, however it not not anywhere near that loud in the original. i guess its a nitpick since its not a studio remake of the song, it still bothers me a little bit. i guess i overreacted. but i agree with the guy who said they forgot to mic the flutist. the guitar is a backing instrument and not a lead, yet they made it sound like a lead. or the guy running the mixing board is an idiot.
@VideoGameInformation I love this soundtrack, but I just disagree with TacoMan Tuesday. Both songs (and not soundtracks) are amazing. By "type of music", I'm just curious what he means 'cause this is the same typical composition logic and in the end they just succed filling up the listener with (different kind of) emotions. So in my opinion, we CAN "hear this type of music in newer games", general thoughts like that are pointless.
im sorry but that was a terrible performance, first of all (as said by everyone else) the guitar is too loud.what I don't understand is why they didn't use an acrostic guitar as the electric guitar sounded horrible and they also used a drum kit instead of the right percussion. during the violin solo the strings could barely be heard over the band and everything went too fast. Although the solo violinist was a great player and sounded great but the concert director ruin it for him.
Think about how the guitar sounds in the beginning, and the chronos theme. Sort of like a clock ticking. This coupled with the fact that the guitar set the tempo for the first half of the song, leads me to think that the guitar represented Time, as unrelenting as it is. So the struggle of flute's lone, quiet voice is made all the more beautiful So many comments on music videos like this presume to know how a song should be played without thinking of why it might have been played the way it was.
I'm a little disappointed by this performance. 1) The flute has a solo in the begining, yet it can hardly be heard, while the guitar sounds almost obnoxiously loud at parts. 2) I dont understand the reasoning behind the increase in tempo...they take the begining at the same tempo as the original, but almost seem to collectively rush later on. 3) Violinist is literally sliding into position at parts, again most likely due to the excessively fast tempo.
Hard to comment on sound levels of a recording of a concert w.out recognizing that it is a recording of a concert and not the actual listening experience. Now we could sit here and pass judgment on the sound engineers of the recording, but we can't say for sure that the guitarist should turn and amp down (even if he does sound a bit over the top) or the flautist's sound level because whose to say the microphones weren't calibrated right. Overall, this performance/what they do is amazing.
Most of the group was not paying attention to the conductor as well as the conductor was merely counting off the time and not putting any emphasis in his directing (as you can tell when they take off way too fast during the main) The guitar sounded like an acoustic/electric Ovation, and has a generally, less authentic sound as say.. a Martin or Larrivée. Still a great completed attempt.
@Ycros the problem is the recorders, I've personally noticed often how recorders tend to fail after the sounds go too low or high, and since in this song the guitar stays in the middle range while flute's and violin tend to go pretty damn high, it's having hard time picking up the sounds resulting in this Overly hearable guitar sound.
I got goosebumps when the violin started playing! Pity the mic wasn't on the solo flute. Would've been nice to hear the other string part a little clearer as well. It could be just that it was recorded directly from the mic feedback too... Other than the technical difficulties though, it was beautifully performed. :) One of my favorite game opening theme.
First of all this orchestrated version not a copy of teh original. Second stop complaining this video cant have 100% fidelity it was recorded from an assistant to the concert. Third its awesomly perferomed no matter what most people who aparently knows almost nothing of music says. Eminence kick ass!!
Flute solo hardly audible, and tempo is rather quick. And is that an electric guitar??? Drowns the hell out of the flute solo. Sounds like Scars of Time went disco. See the VGL and Play! interpretations for a better sound (inexplicably, they are two halves of what should be THE performance of the song, which means they are good but still lacking each other).
Imho its nice.. but lacks the 'wow' feel. The guitar and lead violin in the original rendition of time's scar was AMAZING. Full of feeling.. every note was brimming with emotions. Its like i can almost feel the entire game flowing thru me. Dis sounds like all the emotions were lost somewhere. Nevertheless a fresh-sounding arrangement of the song esp the drums :)
That's because they've randomly got a trap set back there, which honestly doesn't make a lot of sense to me. They also did a horrible job of mic placement with the guitar; it's louder than most of the orchestra. At least in comparison to this particular recording, Play's version is much better, in my opinion.
Eminence is trying to get to the states, but they need more funds, so we'll just have to wait... In the meantime, however, there are some video game symphonies that visit the states (they also go around the world, usually, TrueUSMarine, so you might catch 'em where you are) such as Video Games Live and Play!. I also heard an FF concert is going around soon...
@swat2555 it's a soundboard recording, so the stuff that's not miced probably could be better heard if you were actually in the audience. At least I would hope so, because if not this would be awful lol they shoulda augmented the soundboard recording with a proper field recording
I haven't played Chrono Cross, but I loved the music from Chrono Trigger. If someone composed Frog's theme for an orchestra, it would be the greatest thing of all time. There are videos of people playing it on guitar or piano that I enjoy, but an orchestra would be even cooler.
@zigyzigy13, and after a completely different mic-selection + some soundengineery stuff, you would've not noticed a single thing. (soundengineer here irl) again, the volume is not completely in his hands but the strumming is and fails on that one, i give you that.
Yeah, about the guitar...I think the part was just written poorly. The mic didn't help, but he was picking the strings, whereas the original had a "Gypsy Kings" latin strum to it. The mic didn't help anything, either. Oh well, it was still a kickin performance.
I saw this comment and was like "SHIT! Another discouraging comment right before I hit my Epic Button." But, I don't really think the guitar was that bad, at least towards the end. But holy balls. I don't know this 'Haroaki Yura' guy, but I'm guessing it's the badass they keep zoomin' in on. +1 to ya.
Hmm, this version (or at least the recording) doesn't sound as good as the Passion version (Passion was a small ensemble concert by Eminence with the same lead violinist). And the Passion one actually sounded closer to the original despite having much fewer musicians and instruments.
One of the things people keep forgetting is that the Flute carries the counterpoint at the end of the song, and I agree that you need to mike and up the output of the flute, or cut back on the strings so that it doesn't overwhelm the woodwinds.
@TKTRiseAgainst I would take his guitar and break it on his head... he plays waaaaaay too loud... it's such a shame for such a great piece of music. At first I was hoping big... but I am now extremly dissapointed. Especially at the guitarist and the soundman.
@zigyzigy13, nah, not racist, only a typical weaboo. guitarist doesnt get to decide his volume. soundengineer gets the blame on this one. the feed the camera gets is not from the cameras mic, its from the table (see the mics around the room?).
The guitar would have sounded better with just a couple mics arranged near the sound hole and body. I never plug a classical accoustic guitar into an amp, it sounds unnatural compared to the natural sound of all the other instruments.
@LunaticQuutamo yeah its the second game made by the final fantasy team in (1991... awesome game btw) before they made final fantasy series, go search the game version/opening video, it sounds much better, the guitarist her wrecks it =)
! I heard this song used in a custom scenario/campaign in Age of Empires II; however, somehow, it got deleted or otherwise mysteriously disappeared, but I remembered the song. So happy to finally hear it again, and with Eminence, no less!
I think the volume issue is only because of the recording method, maybe. It looks like the guitar is an acoustic electric so it could have it's own direct sound input, where as the flute needs a mic and is a hard thing to record good sound from
It's so quiet because he's playing an alto flute. It's much harder to really project on harmony flutes or the notes crack. I don't know why they wrote it down for the alto though. The Concert C flute would project better and has a better quality.
Oh my best song yet. I love Chrono Cross. This song is so touching even if its only an instrumental. So beautiful. The guitar at the beginning was too loud though. The other guy who wasn't playing the flute should have played as well.
First chair violin should have really exaggerated the dynamics more. He certainly has more than enough skill to do it. There was just ONE time when he nailed it, but the rest of the solo he just plowed blindly through.
Awful. No microfones on flute, guittars too lond. It seem he's really was expecting too much from delicate instrument such as flute could make it without mic suports. Looks more like amateurs stuff IMO. Té +
I life in Mexico and have heard of it. Got it the day it came out and got all 100 + characters. This game rocks, I like it more than the original Chrono Trigger, I know a lot of people will hate me for that. XD
Man, they butchered the song, in the bad way. The volume was too loud on all of the wrong instruments, and they fucked up quite often. I probably only say this because I love the song, and it needs to be perfect.
To all those who remark on the violinist: of course he steals the show in this performance (and all others). After all, he's Hiroaki Yura, the LEADER of this orchestra. This whole project is his brainchild.
the wave of music is very even and smooth at the first part..didn't like the one of the drums at the last part, it plays on both on and off beats.. overall, very gd! especially the violin soloist, hiroaki yura.
With the guitar so prevalent, this just sounds like the intro tune to Jesus Christ Superstar. That's fine, but it's not Scars of Time. Sad, I like Eminence, but this was painful to listen to.
@andrewserhan I wouldn't call it a terrible performance. Just a terrible recording. Also, as a percussionist, I am insulted by you dismissing a trap set. It's a percussion piece just like anything else.
@DarthGilgamesh A lot of old music is chilling and amazing. Don't listen when you're feeling nostalgic, even if you aren't the crying type you'll feel a weird feeling deep down. This music is powerful.
They did a great job on this but the guitar over rode the flute in the beginning way too much. Turn down the guitar and not have it so "sharp" sounding and it would do wonders in fixing this.
It didn't even seem like they did anything to increase the flute's pick-up. And yet the guitar had a direct plug into the sound system and the violin had a mic. Someone fudged up with the sound equipment.
i think that the flute and guitar were at the right volume. The flute is sapose to be soft and suttle bearly able to be heard giveing you the sence of calmness. Also the violin solo was perfect
Well, there's a problem with the flutes being louder - it can't. There's a certain volume to the flute that's a maximum, and then it just becomes wind again. I agree with the guitar thing though.
If the room was properly set up acoustically, you'd have no problem with the guitar. They should've mic-ed the guitar and the flautist instead of using the onboard guitar preamp.
i bet it was good, but the people in control of the sound at that concert should be ashamed of themselfs, the sound is so out of balance the guitar is outbalancing all the instruments
@andrewserhan Instead of acoustic, I think a classical guitar would've gone best with it. Maybe they were afraid that the guitar wouldn't be heard and that's why it was electric?
Well after 1:30 it sounds nice... before that it's crap. I don't know if the flute's mic was off or if the guitar was just blairing or what... but it was really nice at around 1:30 on...
its very good but the tempo for the violin sped up just a little bit before the calmer part and as everyone said the guitar was TOO LOUD!!!!!!!!! and the flute was TOO SOFT!!!
What crack are you on? The Playstation didn't even exist in 1991. And the first Final Fantasy game was released in 1990. (1987 if you're counting the original Japanese release.)
from 1:50 to 2:05 the first violin seems to have a solo where he really shouldn't, for me it took away from the feeling of "largeness" to the section but well executed nonetheless
xD You're welcome :) I play the trombone too, lol. I only know about the flute thing, is because my teacher was trying to get more for our band, since we only have 2 people playing it.
I heard that the recording of these tunes was done in a way that put emphasis on the wrong instruments -- basically they got the flute part right, just not the recording, oops!
Oh that is a crying shame about the flute... ruining what is otherwise a beautiful performance. At least the people who watched this live got to hear it right.
What was this? A jazzy Scars of Time? :-S The violin was the only instrument that sounded like the original. The played The Opened Way perfectly, but this was a fluke. :-/
@Plingdom 4 the 1st time I didn't like this song the guitar really destroyed the whole piece...i mean you could barely hear the flute....sucked...& i was turned of...lol
I love this song, but some how their performance seems a little off. The violin is astounding but almost everything else sounds like they just chose the wrong instruments
Well I definitely didn't. In terms of style and setup (why flutist didn't have mic?), bad use of instruments and way too fast too tempo kill the classic piece.
@ConsularVoshay Yes he's waiting, because he's the first violin and he has a solo. So the composer didn't write something to him to let him prepare his solo!
this piece is awesome. it was really beautifully performed love it when the violinist started :D asian power!! xD but seriously..great job on the solo(s).
I think I had somehow mixed in another comment with yours in my reply... :S My bad dood. Anyway. Cool, so that IS the Professor Badass they keep panning to.
damn straight he the only one who didn't fuck up the rest of the orchestra did a terrible job. the only part that sounded like the song was the violin solo
