As a really young kid, the desire to play Chrono Trigger was what motivated me to learn to read. It's been my all time favorite video game pretty much ever since. I still go back and replay it every few months to a year. In all that time, I don't think I ever caught the significance of that line until I watched this video.

Plus if you have Lucca in your party when Lavos reveals his "final form" (C'mon, this IS Toriyama after all. xD) she mentions how he's adapted to a humanoid like form by gathering DNA from the entire planet and using it to birth Lavos Spawns, to send them to different planets to repeat the cycle. The "Parasite" Lavos is only the protective shell that harbors the true Lavos inside, always learning and adapting to new things.

For me, the most mesmerizing thing about Lavos was the idea of Lavos. This final character was at least a decade ahead of its time. He wasn't just the stereotypical evil monster. They touched on some really heavy shit with this one...the forest scene in Lucca's side story where everyone's talking about fate and what/who put them on this journey? Their realization before the final battle about what they're actually fighting? They weren't making bad guys like this in the 90's

Chrono Trigger's soundtrack is absolutely my favorite ost ever

Frog's Theme and Magus' Theme are just so good, and showcase their character so well. Frog's is knightly and heroic while Magus' can stand as a boss battle theme or just show his power. There's so many others that are too good, but those 2 always stand out to me.

I can't fathom how he didn't gush over the music. It's astonishing.

It would have been redundant. I can't never find a person that hates this soundtrack. The entire soundtrack is the most complete body of work. Mentioning it isn't needed

I think it's that amazing soundtrack that really makes the game, IMO. Chrono Trigger has some interesting ideas, and a well written story, but that's hardly unique. The sprite work is wonderful, but there are other titles with great sprite work and animations. But it is the amazing soundtrack that ties everything together into a cohesive whole. Every emotional beat is accompanied by a corresponding change in the soundtrack. They also used different styles for the different time periods, and every one is a banger. Each theme could carry a game on its own, but the collections is truly special. The end theme, To Far Away Times, is one of my favorite pieces of instrumental music from any source.

I love ff6. In that game the bad guy actually wins. Kefka successfully destroys the world and becomes a god. A GOD. Killing him afterwords doesn't change the fact that the world is in ruins and most everyone is dead or insane or hungry or scared ...etc. Bad ass.

Lol yeah, it's a wee more complicated that hearing Lavos was there. Which is actually what makes it more intriguing, since you literally had no idea that was going to happen.

The first time you go there yes, it is for a rock needed to reforge the Masamune for Frog so you can stop Magus. The second time you go there, you hear that's where lavos was born, so he's not wrong.

No, Lavos arrived without anyone expecting it, and then he burrows deep into the ground, so there is no reason to return.

CliffJot Well,if we're going to get even more technical we don't even "return". We just get thrown into a portal and randomly found ourselves there. If memory serves correctly. A portal created when Lavos was summoned I believe.

Which makes sense from a lore perspective: hes being juiced up by Zeal as well as not having burnt up his power for millenia before making his appearance at the final battle.

Beating him at ocean palace gives the ending telling you that is the hardest ending in the game.

@@WingMaster562 I use Chrono, Marle and Frog. I like to keep the main couple together and Frog is too good and too cool to pass up. Chrono's and Frog's double tech are some of the best in the game for attacking and Marle's and Frog's double techs are some of the best for healing.

I'm aware of it. And I agree it's a damn good port. I really enjoy the revised story, makes everything make a whole lot more sense. Only things I'm a little iffy on are the new characters (Mawlock in particular I just never found good use of. He was just a little too gimmicky for me.) and the difficulty seeming to be reduced by a lot.

Though, if they ever decide to, I just wish they ignore Chrono Cross ever existed, like Radical Dreamers. Is is weird how Square managed to, even back then, forget what made CT so great. All those useless characters that had next to no motivation to go with you and were, ultimately, redundant, and took focus away from the actually important characters, the weird "infinite reality" that looked more like an excuse to screw up with the Chrono Trigger ending, the unsatisfying "true" ending, the weird battle system where everyone and, literally, their mother can use mostly the same magic whereas magic was a central plot item in CT and the convoluted story that had no impact unless you know CT (and most of the impact is F*CK, they did that to that character?!).... I could go on.... The music, though, is awesome. Maybe even better than CT, which is a tough thing to achieve.

Short attention spans nowadays, and --- hey look,a butterfly!

Its all about the graphics, if you need to make lots of HD models, stages and shit and properly lip sync them with equally good voice acting which is probably from many takes, people make smaller stories which is sad and usually these short stories have no replayability. Anyway the graphics are just an excuse, game devs need to work less on a game with nothing but good graphics and more time into making something that you could actually have fun with for multiple playthroughs, which was something more important in the past too :(.

Graphics actually are pretty important to a game's overall tone and immersion, as well as visual communication and literally everything you see on screen. Don't put the blame on graphics when they play an important role, when you probably should be putting the blame on the fact that developers only make games as a cashgrab. They make the games so short because they have so little time to make them, so many of them are made to be played pretty much once at $60 for the weekend, so you can still feel like paying $60 for the new game next month.

Oh and also, i can understand Suikoden 1 being short, but Suikoden 2? Really? I remember it took 40 hours for me to finish that game. Seems pretty long to me, if not common for a JRPG

DS is pretty much the definitive edition of this game, i still own the original SNES cartridge and the DS one as well.

I have a DS copy, a PS1 copy, and a Japanese SNES copy with my second save file frozen on the menu softlocking glitch at the beginning :) this thing is fun as hell lol

@@WingMaster562 I used to go with Magus, Lucca and Robo for Omega Flare, but I found out that ultimately my great team is Crono, Ayla and Robo. Their triple tech Twister can get as strong as the others, doing more than 10,000 damage, and it doesn't need any kind of stone whatsoever. Plus, to me, they're the three strongest physically, and Robo's healing is the strongest (Marle's healing spells only hit one target unless she combines it with Crono, and Frog's Heal is weak, only healing about half the party's HP at my strongest). Although I have to admit, Frog's weaker healing isn't a problem anymore by the end of the game, seeing as my level and defenses are too high to really care. If I depend on Robo just because he heals better, I'm not doing well. But his Crisis Arm and stronger physicals make him great. Plus, he can do three kinds of elemental damage.

I have the ps1 version that came in a dual pack with final fantasy 4 both games soundtracks are amazing but the ps1 version comes with extra cinematics so it has this badass opening with the main theme and it my favorite part is watching the opening cinematic while the amazing theme plays. Gets me pumped every time

Denzy I was always a great fan of the music in this game. It is so well crafted and emotionally charged, many would say expressive, and does its job very well. I still get chills when I hear selections from it.

Definitely one of the best character resurrections that I’ve seen in fictional storytelling. I love how important Chrono’s death is in the events of history and how you don’t resurrection him, but rather save him and swap him with a clone, ensuring that his death still happens and doesn’t wreck the timeline.

I don't remember having that kind of atmosphere conveyed through music in any game from further generations (maybe except for Sonic Mania but that one doesn't count for obvious reasons). It's so weird. On one hand, I knew but I always saved him without thought...I'm half way through a game now. Maybe I do this one without saving him...man that's gonna be odd.

I don't know if you were aware of this, but you get the secret staff ending at the very beginning of the NG+. At Lucca's machine in Leene Square, you can access a secret time gate that takes you straight to Lavos, where you have to beat him by yourself, since you're the only character in your party at the time. Because of this handicap, I consider this battle much tougher than the interrupted battle.

Michael Holland Considering yu are alone, maybe, but you will have 99 Elixirs at the point. After so many NewGame+, that Lavos can barely hurt you, but the stat cap makes that no level in the whole game lets you survive more than 2 single target attacks from Lavos at Ocean Palace. I can tank aroung 7 attacks of lavos with crono solo before elixir. Now, the last part itself is indeed harder.

GaNopper is right. Midgame Lavos is the strongest enemy in the game. He does way more damage than Lavos at any other time. Also, at this point you do not have as many speed tabs and unless you have done every sidequest, you do not have items that prevent status ailments. Which sucks because Lavos will confuse you. It requires quite a bit of prep work and planning to beat mid game lavos the first time through.

+garfreeek I dont know how much time you have spent in that game, but it took me 98 hours to complete it, with every single side quest done, I had no problems with the final boss but that doesnt mean that I had it easy I was level 81 even tho I grind SO MUCH in the game so, my advice is, Play the game when you have A LOT of time, and be sure to do it in a 4+ hours session and enjoy it, the ending is so good

Me too, I just found a pre-owned copy of it yesterday and finally bought it :D

So I love Chrono Trigger. It is an amazing game, with awesome art and animations, the best story of any RPG ever(I WILL DEBATE YOU ON THIS) and even a fun combat system. But if there is one thing I can't stand about this game, it's the selection squeak. If you have played the game, ShinyStarriNite, you will understand.

I have the original SNES version and I kept the box, manual, the posters and even the cartridge cover. That makes it worth about $200.

+Lucky Egg Definitely intentional since Cell was some produced experiment of a freak and Lavos is a freak from the depths of space. Toriyama tends to draw characters similar to other ones he draws a lot. Similarities will happen.

I really liked the story, but I could never really feel a connection to the weird job system. I would like to, but it's not as straightforward a jobsystem like in FFV, and its pretty covoluted, so I always just stuck with giving every character the genies their haircolour matched :D

Golden Sun has those Djins, remember? Every Character can be equipped with up to nine Djins. Every Character is basically tied to a certain Planet - Jupiter (yellow, Isaacs hair), Mars (red, Garrets hair), Venus (pruple, not Ivans hair but his robes), and Mercury (blue, Mias hair) - Giving Isaac for example only Jupiter Djins, as is default, he will automatically stay on the Knight-Class, with only Jupiter related Psinergy, while Mia for example, given only Mercury Djins, will be on the Priest-Path. You can however mix things up - give Garret for example three Jupiter and three Venus Djins, and he will become a Ninja. In the first game, this is still okay, because there are only classes with up to 2 different kinds of Djins. In the second game, it get's even worse, because there are classes only obtainable by giving a character a certain split between three kinds of Djin. For a character to become, for example, a beastlord, he has to be equipped with three Djins of every Planet that isn't his signature one (so Mia, who is Mercury, needs 3 Jupiter, 3 Mars, and 3 Venus). Now this is a cool concept, it's just never properly explained, and in the beginning, when you try switching around the Djins for the first time, you see that by switching Isaacs Jupiter and Garrets Mars Djin, that they are now the same class - Brutes. So mixing and matching is discouraged from the very beginning, unlike in for example Final Fantasy 5, where you get a tutorial on switching and mixing classes as soon as you obtain the first classes for your team.

Really? I knew it was never really explained in the first one but I didn't think it was discouraged. I did it anyway!

Yeah well, like I said, the first time you have 2 Djins, it's probably a Jupiter and a Mars one, and switching them on Isaac and Garret gives both of them the same class, so I didn't try ever again until years later, and none of my friends did either :D

+Trafalgar D. Water Law If nothing else, you can at least still find the music remixes that were done for it if you look for them! Mathew Valente was the artist behind the music for the project, his old website is still up and still has a good chunk of what he had done for it I believe.
