Jason why have you failed to mention anything about the Sola-Busca Deck, dated to 1523. Sola-Busca was apparently made by a Ferrarese artist, with classical and biblical characters, and illustrated suit cards. (Cf. the 1550 Rouen classical deck.) It has the standard number of trumps and suit-cards, and the suit-signs are almost standard, but are worked into individual scenes. Elaborately engraved on metal plates. Their images are quite dark and have been linked to Saturnian Worship cults of the elites. History is sketch on it's origin, Stuart Kaplan writes: "In Early Italian Engravings (1938), A.M. Hind wrote of a complete pack of tarocchi cards dating from the late fifteenth century. The cards were owned by the Sola-Busca family of Milan, but are presently accessible only through photographs given to Hind by the Sola family for the British Museum, and through Hind's book, which illustrates the deck. Hind was given the privilege of examining the actual cards in 1934. Unfortunately, the Sola-Busca family and their cards can no longer be found.

Divination through shuffle and throw is as old as the hills friends. Goes way back way before the printing press. One example of Tarot-like divination might be the Sybilline Oracles at Delphi, where pages of an unbound book were drawn at random in response to queries. The power of the imagination to gain insight via working with images, for example, dreaming, is woven into the images and artwork that through whatever series of random events became standardised as the Tarots we inherit today. Surrender to the moment through a randomised casting of objects has long been a useful way of bringing fresh insight in where it's needed. Saying Tarot didn't exist before the printing press would be like saying ideas didn't exist before writing, or that nothing existed before cameras were there to record them. So, the archetypal figures of "Temperance", or "Justice" for example, goes way way way way way back, I mean, WAY back before printing, and are powerful and highly malleable reservoirs of ideas, inspiration, imagery, knowledge, and so on. Spiritual teaching through images such as paintings, (often to include largely illiterate populations), if also very very old. Spiritual teaching through games, is ancient. Mass reproduction of "playing" (praying?) cards, less old, the technology of oracles and divination, VERY much older.

It always amuses me when people are afraid of tarot cards. Tarot cards are just pieces of paper. Although I do believe that there are forces in our realm which help us as well as those which challenge us, I view the tarot as a mirror of the self within the greater field of consciousness. The cards help us to draw wisdom from that field. When I read the tarot for someone, I first explain the general meanings of each card. These are linked with archetypes and experiences which are common to all of humanity. For example, the Fool can represent the carefree spirit within us all which leaps before it looks. As soon as I explain this, the person who is being read for starts drawing parallels to their own situation. I look at the relationships between various cards, the assigned meaning of each position in the spread, and then relate it to the question the person has asked. If they ask whether they are going to get back together with their boyfriend, and I see cards that indicate squabbles about money, we talk about that. The problem doesn’t go away just because the relationship did. We can’t change other people. We can only change ourselves. So the next thing is about what to do about the situation within their own life. Looking at the various meanings of the cards in those positions which pertain to actions, a sensible plan can be developed for improvement. It’s like Life Coaching with cards. What about getting back together with the boyfriend? That may become irrelevant when all is said and done. The cards can suggest a likely outcome, but the future is what we make of it. I would caution anybody to be careful. There are a lot of unscrupulous tarot readers out there. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I also enjoyed sightseeing along familiar Southwestern highways without having to worry about the traffic.

Tarot readers focus too much on romantic relationships and less on personal spiritual development imo. There is a reader called Queen of Cups Tarot...every time she shuffles pre reading, she splits the deck and shows the cards, does it three or four times. Every time there will be a card that shows itself each time, even after shuffling. Sometimes the same two cards will follow the last shuffle. Spirit is amazing.

Tarot is a tool of a master in his trade. For good or bad. I have never read the cards well. My own thought takes over and nullifies what it is said that the card actually means. I was just doing a bit of research in relation to this video. There are a set of Runes called the Armanen runes (Armanen Futharkh) that was made by Austrian mysticist and Germanic revivalist Guido Von List, during a state of temporary blindness in, guess when.... 1902. I thought you might find that of interest.

Scholars like Kerenyi found the original wall reliefs in Eleusis that were the origins of at least the major Arcana. They were probably integrated at some point in history into the Tarot system and preserved by various mystery school traditions like Eleusis. I talk about the various legoominisms (stories) that appear in Greek Mythology and literature that later became the major Arcana of the Rider Waite system. Jason (et al), if you want to know where the Major Arcana of The Rider Waite system came from, get a copy of the book "Tabernacle and The Body of God," by Tony Victor.

Jason, I am from Holland and also lived in Haarlem in my early childhood and very well remember the beautiful statue of Laurens Janszoon Coster, (Haarlem 1370 AD - 1440 AD). He is well known in Holland for his invention of the printing press. I did not know Johannes Gutenberg (Mainz, Germany) stole it from Coster. Thanks for again a beautiful presentation!

Tarot is just a tool to help you get in touch with your inner self by using a material object, just like a pendulum or something. You can use anything to do this if you believe it will work. Your trust and belief is what makes it work. Anyways learning about it's origin is fascinating of course.

The Tarot cards are fascinating, someone that had a set and was no way professional or had much knowledge about them, neither did I at the time, she asked me to pick a random card from the deck and it was so accurate to the current state I was in that I had to do some research and find out what's the purpose of them, a mere card game ? Something spiritual? Or something in-between, my conclusion, if you believe they will help you see where you are in your life at the time, they can be beneficial for self reflection and improvement, that's my opinion anyways, Peace to you eternal reading this, sending positive frequencies your way!❤🕊️

Oh no! The tarot deck you are holding up is the contemporary Rider-Waite deck , and was drawn in the 1900's published in 1909. It was drawn by a British woman, Pamela Colman-Smith, who was part of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn with W.B. Yeats, Mathers and Edgar Waite etc. in Ireland. It was the first deck to illustrate the Pip cards ie; Minor Arcana. The "Tarot de Marseilles" deck of the 1400's you think you are referring to is completely different imagery! It is old woodcuts painted in primary colors. The Pip cards are not illustrated but only the symbols; batons, swords, coins/disks and cups. There is some dissension between followers of the original ancient French Tarot, and that of the contemporary Rider-Waite. I considerr the Tarot de Marseille to be the foundational tarot deck. Stuart R. Kaplan of US GAMES brought the deck "Swiss IJJ" Tarot over from Europe and began to publish it and the Rider-Waite in the 60's. Alejandro Jodorowsky is an expert on Tarot ( a purist scholar of the Tarot de Marseilles French tarot only) and claims a tarot deck was found in an Egyptian Coptic-Christian church from the 1st century. He's written several books on Tarot and has included Tarot in his independent films which are now cult classics such as "The Holy Mountain". Alejandro is a total errant before his time, and the film industry has been trying to shut him up for decades. He is one who is into "creating reality tunnels" which he calls Psychomagic, and alchemy and so forth. Most tarot decks today are rip offs of Pamela Colman-Smith's work ie; Rider-Waite deck of which you are presenting here, illustrated or photoshopped by people who know nothing about tarot and are only trying to make a buck using tarot. This is a saturated market of "themed" bad tarot decks. Christians do not like Tarot, they have been taught it is evil soothsaying (of course). Tarot is actually a vehicle for garnering truth and information, but it all depends on the individual reading them. Tarot to the true initiate is a point of focus that opens informational doorways. Collecting tarot decks from real artists is worthwhile because they get out of print, are limited editions, and actually even in contemporary form give insights on the human condition that may be useful. For instance the Salvador Dali deck, the HR Giger deck and Tarot of the Pomegranate deck :) Thank you for speaking about Tarot and other occult practices for those of us who walk that path.

I find in my hobbies of analyzing shapes, patterns, numbers, letters, and sounds, that there must be a Natural meaning or quality to each of them. I would suspect that the Cards and the art and patterns in the cards was an attempt to explain or associate what was perceived to be the natural meaning in the cards. Arcane meanings sound like Artificial meaning assigned to symbols or patterns, connected with an unnatural order or organization with ill intent. A hatred of the Natural order, and an attempt to reshape the minds perception of the intent and design of nature. I resolve myself to continuing to analyze and study these things, and find the Natural meanings mostly lost or polluted by the ambitions of those who defy the Creator's design for all that is. Language is the baseline that I believe needs to be started with. English is a language of magic, with which one Spells with the Arcane. The natural language must be phonetic, unlike English, which often is not.

The Greek word for Faith is so much greater than it has been watered down to mean. Most people believe that Faith is to believe. A dictionary definition of believe is accepting something as true but the Greek word used for Faith is a complex word. The thing about US copywrite law is that it all stems from Article 1 Secrion 8, "Congress has the power... The Sola Busca tarot is dated to 1490's and the original is on museum display. Peter Mark Adams' Game of Saturn book is a break down of the meanings of cards and really twisted history behind them.

As someone who is relatively into tarot, what else is new?? I never heard anywhere that tarot is old or ancient. Readers already know it's fairly modern. It may be based on ancient stuff and archetypes, but not old as a practice.

Rider Company published the first tarot system for divination in 1909. It is not older than that.

I'd love to see a similar video on I Ching, as that is supposedly ancient. I work with that and I am often surprised at the answers I get. If a video has already been done, please let me know. I read tarot and it's great for learning fluency in symbolism. It's not my favorite system -- I prefer to work with oracle card decks, many of which are based on tarot symbolism. It's like learning a non-verbal language. If you become fluent in symbolism IMO it's easier to navigate non-linear uncertainty.

I never thought, that Tarot cards are from old Egypt, and even if they were made in old Egypt, would make no difference. It doesn´t matter at all. You can even make your own cards or stones or whatever. Important is just your connection with your higher self, that´s all and training.

tarot seems an extension of the method used to read bones (which later became dominos / dice ) or casting runes , same as cards just tools to intuitively interpret
