Worked on my 2010 Dodge grand caravan. My am/fm and the cd player were not working for years, all I could do was play pandora from my cell phone thru the audio plug in port of the radio and then that finally went a few months ago. I did exactly what you did, step for step (had my phone playing video while I did it) and it worked like a charm! Thanks for passing along the info, from a fellow DIY'er.... *I did not have a small hot air gun BUT I do have a high heat gun (about the size of a blow dryer for your hair). I used aluminum foil rolled up like a cone and put on end of my heat gun so I could pin point the heat. It works great, hope it helps somebody else... thanks again
@kikastra no problem, hope it helps you. I always read the comments of the DIY videos to see if there's any other tips and tricks to get the job done.
Add 1 more success story! Had the same problem with no am/fm while everything else worked. I knew i was getting it hot enough because i melted the solder on 1 of the adjacent inductors and had to move it back into position and melt the solder again to reconnect. Thanks! Thanks! Thanks for the video!
THANK YOU! 🥳 I just finished and it WORKED!!!!! I took a hot air gun on high and blasted the chip for a good 30s. Took it to the van hooked it up again. Didn't work! BUT it would work if I pressed down on the chip while still connected. So I took it out, blasted it again, pressed down on the chip with a screwdriver for a good 2-3 mins to cool. Then I cut a wood skewer to length and wedged it so it was like a tent pole on top of the chip to under the CD bracket and VOILA!! Works fine! BACKSTORY: Was not working properly for well over a year! 2012 Dodge Caravan. Radio reception would get lost then it finally cut out with 0 volume. Only AUX or CD worked 'off and on' for a few seconds at a time. I wish you the best my man! I really do thank you! And Bless all the helpful people in the youtube community ❤
Thanks for the tip and the clear video! Mine didn't loose sound but stations would drift in/out, no lock on, just got noise on AM (no signal found), etc. Figured it was the same chip. One tip.... Be careful how much air flow is going out your hot air gun! I accidentally below 3 0402's off their pads (oh oh!). Fortunately your video quality was so good I was able to match the 3 parts up and soldered back in place. Works like a champ now!
This worked for me, I made a little heat shield out of tin foil to protect the other nearby components and only expose the pins of the chip. Found a cheap hot air station on Amazon and set it to about 450 degf for about 8-10 seconds on each side while holding pressure. Working great now, thanks!
Just fixed the wife’s radio thanks for posting. I’d bought her a new Android style replacement and she didn’t like it. Most of These newer style Android style replacements don’t have volume knobs just touch sensitive volume controls. Also I couldn’t get the aftermarket Android radio to dim enough for night use. Tried everything… too bright whole inside of car lit up. So I fixed her old one and put it back in. She’s super happy. Thanks again.
I ended up cutting a 1/4" square of wood, and jammed it between the chip and the metal support just above it. Just that extra pressure keeps the connection, and the radio works. We'll see how long it lasts, though
Did you wedge the wood between the black chip and the metal piece above it on the wall of the radio? I’m looking to do the same. Were the dimensions 1/4x1/4x 3/4 or something similar?
@@bonilla1221 Yes, that's what I did. I read on another YT post where someone else put a plastic pen cap in there, and that worked for them. I figured that the wood wouldn't bend, and might last longer. It's been almost a year, so I can't remember the exact dimensions. Just try whatever fits, as long as it puts pressure on the chip, and keeps the connection. And, yes, it's still working
Just made this repair to my 2014 Jeep Wrangler radio this past weekend. Worked perfectly! My AM/FM stopped working a few months ago and then last week, the radio sound would go on and off every few seconds. This repair fixed both issues! Thanks for the video!!
Thank you so much man , you saved my father from a 300$ so called repair job from the local mechanic. Before i couldn’t play Cd’s & am/fm radio but now with your help i fixed everything
Thanks for posting. I purchased a Soldering Rework Station for less than $40 on Ebay and did this repair myself. It worked like a charm! Nothing to it! Thanks again.
Great video! I know nothing about electronics, but I fixed my radio using your instructions! I have a heat gun,but no small tips so I made a cone tip out of aluminum foil for this "one off" job! It worked! Thanks!
Worked for me! I had to use a small flame gun, thought i was going to melt the circuit board...am a hero to my wife. Saved us some bucks.....Many thanks
Just ran into this on a 2014 grand caravan, same radio different part #. I used a little SEAL-ALL and a q-tip to apply it. It dried clear and looked like a factory job. Glad I came across your video!
Thank you for this video, just re-flowed my wife’s minivan radio. I normally don’t do any electronics repairs but your video walked me through the entire process easily including having a reason to buy some new tools 👍
I tried it on mine today and it worked, It didn't take very long. It was extremely simple after watching your video and googling another RU-vid video on how to remove the dash trim saved me a bunch of money. Thank you very much.
just did this to my 2013 grand caravan and as I am not setup with proper tools to reflow the solder I pulled the board completely out and took it to a local electronics repair shop..of course no warrenty but it cost me under $25 and works like a charm now
I have a 2012 Jeep Wrangler, same exact radio. I bought the tool, similar to the one you are using and IT WORKED!! And I can use the tool for other reflow projects on main boards on computers. A Decent tool like the one he uses is about $120. Thanks so much for sharing this video!
You're welcome, glad you were able to get yours going again. 120 dollars for a tool you can use over and over is a lot better than 600 dollars for a new unit, which will eventually break again.
Thank you so much for this! Been plagued with faulty radio sound for a while now and google searches have had me pulling speakers and my headliner and fuses and all sorts of odd things... Thought I would give this a shot. Didn't have a heat gun so I used a butane torch lighter and waved it along each side for a few seconds from a couple inches away while pressing down on the chip as you did... Worked like a charm!!! Now to put my headliner and speakers and fuses and dash back together... You Sir, are a gentleman and a scholar! Thanks again!
Thank you so much for this video. My am/fm was making noise, but nothing but static. Did exactly what you did, except I used a bernzomatic torch because I didn't have a heat gun, and the radio is working perfectly! Thank you again!
This is a great video. Instead of using the hot air device in the video, I used my Weller P2K portable butane soldering iron. It also includes two hollow tips...a short one (approx 3/8") and a long one (approx 3/4"). Do NOT use the short one as it's a torch. The long one can be used on heatshrink and worked well for this repair...try melting some solder first to get used to it...it's a great device if you're thing about purchasing something to perform this repair.
Worked perfectly! Thanks so much, you saved me buying a new radio My symptoms: the radio (AM/FM) stopped working then after a couple months all of the audio would cut out every 2 seconds or so ( almost like the van had hiccups ).
Amazing, this worked perfectly. While I was watching the video I was thinking, No Way. It worked...By the way, Dodge was going to charge me more than $1000 to replace the radio, thank you...
Good day friend. I just became a power of a 2012 grand Cherokee similar issues. AM/FM still not working possibly because i don’t have the external antenna. HOWEVER ur video works. My satellite & aux port no longer cuts in & out. Please keep sharing great content ❤
Thank you!! I ordered a Rework Station (Vevitts 858D) from Amazon but needed to set it to 220 deg C to make the solder repair for our 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan with the same radio in this video. We had no sound on AM/FM while Satellite and Aux did have sound.
Thanks for the video. Since I didn’t have the fancy heat gun I decided to use my wife’s oven. Started at 100 F then heated Circuit board to 250 F for 2 mins. Then I took it out and let it cool. Reinstalled and it worked like a charm. Cost $0. Will see how long it lasts.
Great video. Mine's doing the same and I'll get around to trying this...thanks much!!! The board is conformal coated and protects largely against moisture...but it also holds in some heat generated by the components. Note that "heating up" and "cooling down" cycles deteriorate solder connections over time. I imagine this IC gets hot when in use which may be why it's uncoated. If you coat this IC in the future, it may get hotter than expected and may fail permanently. A better idea, since there appears to be plenty of room, is to purchase a heat sink for that style of IC package and attach it to the top using something like Arctic Silver (thermal adhesive)...and actually, any heat sink that will fit in the area would help to some degree...
Thanks, I hope it works for you. There is a fan inside this piece, though from the looks of it, I don't think it runs very often, if ever at all. I'd be much more apt to modify that fan such that it runs continuously whenever the unit is powered on.
@@_zhawkeye_9808 hey, sorry for replying to such an old comment, but I just did the repair in this video and I was wondering if you ever got around to working on the fan? If so, would you be willing to share some tips on that?
@@crypticgamma6308 ...hey Cryptic...well, no I didn't do it...I was anxious about getting the Jeep back together, so I put it off. I seem to remember there being room around the front left side (?) where there's already vent holes (this was quite a while back, so I may be wrong)... I seem to remember vent holes at the rear right side too, so a fan sucking in air at the front left would blow across the IC in question and out the right rear. Finding a switched 12 volt connection point inside the radio is the issue...I didn't take time to track down a good place for this connection...the 12 volt input into the radio is likely not switched, and present all the time so that the radio can retain the programmed stations...and, it could be that a switched 12V connection isn't available...it's likely connected to a 5V regulator to run the radio and retain memory. I'd prefer a 12V fan over a 5V fan as it would draw less current, and a 5V fan added to the 5V regulator will put more stress on the regulator... Wish I could've helped more on this... Matt
Excellent video! My radio works - I purchased a cheap heat gun and borrowed a screwdriver. Easy to follow instructions and great pictures. Thanks so much!
Thanks for the detailed video. I heard you could do this so I took my stereo out but couldn't figure out how to safely take it apart so this really helped!
Add some flux, use some leaded solder and a soldering iron. Clean up any bridges and then test. Once its working and clean use some clear spray paint like Rust-Oleum enamel clear or similar that dries in about 20 minutes to touch... Done... ;)
Thanks so much for this. I've fixed electronics my entire life, but never used a rework station. I bought one for $50, and saved the cost of a repair which was quoted at $295. Radio works fine now!
My ‘15 Grand Caravan radio has this problem. My radio looks the same as the one you repaired. Now I need to find someone in my area that can repair my radio!
Thanks for posting this video. I just bought a 2012 ram 1500 with this problem, no sound on AM/FM but Satellite radio had sound, haven't checked the CD player yet. I will be purchasing a soder reworking station and doing this repair. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for this excellent video! I was able to fix my radio without taking it to be repaired or replaced. What a great and rewarding project 👍🏼 Thank God!
Worked for me too, Thank you for the video. FYI, in my case the sound was cutting off every few seconds with a popping noise (not loud)- radio, usb, bluetooth.
Thank you so very much!! This video is extremely detailed and valuable. You saved me from buying a new radio. I only wish the video I found to remove the radio from the dash was as good as this one was. Awesome job!! 👍👍👍
Thanks for the video. You just saved me at least $400 and my time if I had to replace this with an aftermarket stereo. Your method worked like a charm.
Thanks! Works great, if it doesn't work first time try again. Make sure gun is close and hot and hold for 6 seconds, press down pretty hard. 3rd time I did it it worked, figured the radio would have been trash anyways.
Picked up a Liberty with this issue. Thank you for the video & also explaining a reason why it's an issue. So I don't have the gear to reflow the chip, I might just Crutchfield - replace it.
People should know that this is not a through hole chip, it just lies on the board, if you are not careful you can move the chip right off of its spot which is what happened to me. As did a bunch of smaller resistors, so only put heat on for a very short time and push straight down. I ended up finding another radio at junkyard for $28 and did not need a code, worked as soon as I plugged it in.
2014 Jeep Wrangler Sahara Unlimited. Sound was cutting in and out every 3-4 seconds. Spent hours of time trying to figure out the problem until I found this solution. Re-flowed the chip as described that seemed to be causing the problem and it worked. We’ll see how well it holds and how long it lasts. The soldering around the chip was very sparse and cracked before I re-flowed. Thanks for the solution!
Thank you! especially for pointing out the specific chip, and most of all for showing reassembly. Makes it a lot easier than the classic "just reverse the steps" ;)
Thank you. I don’t know if this would help re sealing, but you can get liquid electrical tape. We have the same problem in our 2016 Dodge Caravan. The dealer wanted a fortune to fix the no audio problem. We took it to two local repair shops, and they both said this is a very common problem. It bothers me Dodge has been knowingly using these defective stereos. IMO, this should be a recall item. Dodge shouldn’t be able to get away with selling vehicles with defective stereos. I’d love to find out how many vehicles have this problem, so everyone could make a complaint to the BBB. I’d also like to add, Dodge vehicles ( some of them from 2013 - present) with aluminum hoods, are corroding. It shows up as paint bubbles around the edges of the hood. Dodge TSB # 31-002-20 explains the reason for the problem, instructions for investigating and repair. Once I became aware of the problem, I look at vans in parking lots, etc., and I’ve seen hundreds of them. They should be forced to issue a recall. We’ve had three Dodge Caravans in a row. We loved them, and still would if they weren’t having so many problems.
Thanks for the video!! Not only does my FM/AM not work, but the stereo comes on for 6-8 seconds and off 6-8 second repeatedly. Even with incoming calls. Once you attempt to correct the problem, what needs to be connected back to the car to check if problem solved? Does EVERYTHING need to be reassembled?
Just did this with my 2012 Chrysler 200. The board is the same but the chip on mine didn't have visible solder joints on either side of the board. Heated it up anyway, and it seemed to have worked. Time will tell.
Thank you for video. I have the same problem with the same radio i have in my dodge ram pick up. Everything works but amfm radio. Fixed it once worked for a few hours then quit again. It comes and goes when ot wants to my radio. Ive been trying to find another radio or fix this one. Guess chrysler needs to improve on the build of their radios.
Apparently this is a common issue with this specific model of radio. I work at a Jeep dealer, and we see these radios fail from time to time for this specific issue.
Good to know. So, maybe I should just replace the factory radio. I’m truly over it. You would think the Jeep manufacturers would take note, and CHANGE the brand. Oh wait... y’all make money off of replacing it. Nevermind.🤦🏾♀️
@@bearsrule8263 I don't get why they built these radios so poorly. I know FCA (Jeep's parent company) didn't build the radios, but outsourced production (they used to make their own radios up until the mid-2000s at their Huntsville Electronics Plant in Alabama, but closed that plant) to another manufacturer. I would hope they would've switched manufacturers, because it is a recurring issue. The touchscreen radios never had this problem, but they're incapable of outputting decent-quality sound, even with one of the "Premium" systems (like Alpine, Boston Acoustics, or Infinity).
Thanks for the video ! My 2016 Grand Caravan radio FM is working fine, but AM radio just some noise, never used CD but think it is fine. I am thinking to follow your video see if it can fix the problem. Just waiting a on line order heat gun to be delivered.
Have a 1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo with a factory Jeep 56002467(1991) AM/FM Cassette Player and swapped out the tape modules in two 2467 cases. Now I have me some rocking tunes. Now what I need to know is what is the cause of either the left or right channel going out on a 2467 and on a 56009004(1992) the volume knob is maxed out but I still need just a little bit more volume.
if you don't have a heat tool !!!! i just fixed mine heated a small flat screwdriver to red hot on the tip and touched it to the connecter solder joints fore just a few seconds work your way around reheat if necessary don't slide side to side just straight touch good fix THANKS !!
