That has always worked for me...except for snap ring pliers. There is an evil elf in my garage who is always taking those.

Conversely get rid of a tool you haven't used forever and you will need it tomorrow

That's why I have a drawer full of 10 mm sockets

It may not come from the factory with never sees on the plugs I still use it though!

Lol thTs how I have come up with two tools of the same size. Go buy. New one for the lost one. Works every time.

I'm a retired motorcycle mechanic and was 'ok' with electrics but I'm sure these videos would have helped me with diagnosis way back when.

@@jima3129 I'm a mechanic of 36 years and I always apply anti seize to my plugs. My Dad was a pneumatic engineer and he did the same, I know tons of Mechanics that do it and some that don't. I was taught there are White areas of things that must be done like changing headlights in two's you do one you do them both, or if you change a water pump never recycle the coolant use fresh new coolant, or more complex procedures like when you change a rubber timing belt you should also replace that front oil seal(s) on the camshaft(s). A Black area of things you do not do like not change the oil until the cars computer reads 0 percent life, or lol even trust the computer alone, or so a full transmission fluid change on a transmission that has never been service has 150k miles on it and has started to slip, you're just asking for trouble. These are things most if not all good mechanics can all agree on. And a Grey Area wherein some do and some do not and anti seize on plugs lives here. Or prefilling an oil filter when doing an oil service. My Dad did that as he said it doesn't take too long to get that oil through but there is a few seconds you engine is running on no oil, and he was taught at the caterpillar factory they do prefill the oil filters but tell folks not to in the books because they are not trained to do so. I prefill mine and have never had an issue with contamination besides the pickup tube has a permanent filter in it before it even passes the oil filter. The only time I don't is if the mounting surface for the filter is at such an angle that the oil would just spill out. Buicks are often at an angle or like on my 14' Enclave is practically horizontal. This grey area is wherein many mechanics don't agree or have their own ways and rules to do things. So, do not fear my friend, there are a great many of us that do add the silver blood of unicorns to the plugs for future ease removal. Eric the car guy is one YT channel that does and he too like me is a Master Mechanic. In fact when I was dating my Wife, I worked on her car to help save her money and did a oil and plug service. She at the time worked at a used car lot in the office and would often take it to the mechanic that the lot used for free trusted inspection and cheaper yet still charged services, but being in the dating arena I had to show my skills off and show that I'm a keeper, right, lol? Even though she doubted my work and really only trusted that guy, which sounds odd but from her point of view she's never dated a mechanic never knew one socially, and only ever trusted that guy. But all went well she saw me work on the car a 11' Kia Soul, she asked what is that for, I said this is anti seize and it will stop the plugs from rusting in place for easy future removal. I also believe in applying dialectic grease to the boots for the plugs too, as some don't do that either lol. Well the car about a week later was having issues starting so she took it to her trusted mechanic guy who told her and I on speaker phone, I was on in secret, that it needed new spark plugs because the old ones went bad, I told her you saw me just do them last weekend and said that guy is a fraud he wanted to replace them and charge her money I said they are changed 50k miles normally and obviously we haven't done 50k in a week, she didn't know this, I said in her ear, ask him if the plugs were hard to get out, and she did and on speaker phone he said oh yeah they rusted right in there, I couldn't take no more I chimed right in, and I got out hello sir I'm her boyfriend and I'm a master mechanic and.... he hung up. I said he has been lying to you for years, you probably had work done you didn't need. Well as for the car I couldn't get it to duplicate the non start problem and asked what she did and she said all she did was get gas and it acted up, it didn't dawn on me until I went with her to get gas and watched as she kept trying to top it off after the handle on the pump clicked. I said oh no, lol there's your problem lady you can't fill past that on modern cars, shouldn't do it on classics either, but on modern cars especially as the gas will bleed or get pushed into the charcoal canister and cause a starting issue. After that and years later married and that car is still under my care and not a single issue. But I had her come out and remove one of my plugs after we got off the phone and she said that was easy I said and he told you they were hard to get out. Had I not added anti seize to those plugs and for her to see, she wouldn't have believed her ol'reliable mechanic was a cheat and a scammer. I'm my wife's second marriage, and her first was a douchebag who thought he could work on cars but ended up messing them up, and he wasn't very nice to her either down right abusive, so for many years on her own she had to rely on others for help so it was hard to break her from that habit while we dated, lol which is why she didn't believe I at the time could work on cars which is funny to me having gone to school and at one time I was ASE certified. A while back the Mrs and Eric had a competition shooting bows and I believe the Mrs beat Mr O. She is a very good shot.

Living in salt free SW France, I don’t miss the UK’s corrosion at all.

Mr. O is also in NY, where inspections are a thing. Some of the "vehicles" on the road here in MI would stagger a lot of people. There aren't any inspections here; unless it's the first time said car has been in a shop in 20 years.

@@michaellorenz7177 In the UK, inspections are mandatory after a car is three years old. Called the MOT Test (Ministry of Transport) it's currently £45 ($55) and includes emissions. Everything is inspected, down to the condition of the wiper blades. If caught driving without an MOT, it's a fine of varying degrees. Police cars can automatically ping a number plate and it comes back with Insurance, MOT and the Road Tax status.

Well of course it would be easy to keep your cool, he lives in New York where it gets cold and we're getting cold now...

I like that he goes the extra mile to get to the problem. Follows the trail. I do that from time to time, more if I could but told I over think or are to technical... So problem never gets solved. But you know there is a solution. 👍

Actually, his vids should be a must for anyone who owns a car. I'm a 60 year old female and I watch Eric here and Eric on I Do Cars to learn and understand how my car works and what does what so when I need work done I can better describe it to my mechanic and two, so I'm not a complete mechanical dummy so I can smell when I'm trying to be oversold or lied to because they do that to women too often. I have a great mechanic who I trust but you never know if something happens away from home. I also make sure I do my services on time and check my fluids frequently and change them on schedule. So far so good. So I recommend these vids for anyone who owns a car and wants to keep it in good shape.

I like watching Pakistanis try to fix out of round crankshafts and cams in dirty shacks, with a lathe and other tools from the 1940s. It's so futile, they don't even know what a micrometer is.

Would be a lot longer video if he didn't know what he was doing... Since he's met issues like this before, spent a longer time the first few to figure out the methods, and that makes life easier following.

@@stevenkerwin4041 they use magnesium chloride spray, which does not cause much corrosion,. But it's not too great on your paint.

Here in the dry mountain west too. Bought a van (no longer have it) that "grew up" on Long Island, NY. Wasn't that old and the rust was surprising. My dad thought it had been in a flood. LOL

I don’t think I’ve ever worked in a shop with less than 150 psi. The shop I’m in now runs around 185. I couldn’t imagine running air tools at the “recommended” 90 psi. They just don’t feel like they have any balls at all at that pressure.

​@@Jpilgrim30 I had a truck shop and I had a air compressor and tank that I ran 220 PSI. Of course changing big truck tires, and lug nuts can use a little more air pressure.

If you're on your own time, doing rear plugs on a 3rd or 4th gen, I highly recommend removing the wiper cowl - it's not much work, and makes a lot of room esp. for tall people with big hands.

That’s why I hope to build a garage with a lift someday, because having something like that makes certain repairs that much easier. Makes me miss my high school days when I had the ability to use a lift in the shop.

Yup, as Eric mentioned, the Ford Triton V10s are notorious for plugs coming apart like that. It even takes a specialized tool to get the busted parts out and rethread the hole.

Interesting to see that even Chrysler plugs break. I have a F-150 Triton. Two out of 8 broke... But on the poor mechanic since I was not too keen to change them myself and I do not have the tool to remove the remnants.

60-odd years ago, I was reading Popular Mechanix and the monthly story about the Model Garage had a broken plug incident. I remember that the solution was to use a triangular file tapped in and that allowed the broken piece to be unscrewed. Was the proprietor of the Model Garage named Gus? Well, chances are that many here are considerably younger than I and may not have even seen a Popular Mechanix mag let alone read a Model Garage story. Now, I feel ancient.

I found out the hard way that resistor plugs (which nearly all automotive ones are) plus resistor wires means burned out ignition coils after 10000 miles. Most auto parts stores defaulted to resistor wires for my Ford Focus. I measured the OEM ones -- very low resistance. Once I replaced with non-resistor wires I had no more burned out coils.

the words need to match the make of a car! I go to a British car show every year in my 1966 Rover 2000. We have vehicle recovery facilities, and a fully equipped work shop. We have pulled vehicle heads and swapped out transmissions before so cars can make it home afterwards. Much British style swearing can be heard as we fix various Rover cars so they can make it home again! For Japanese cars you need Jap sweating. All shop manuals should come with a page of swear words in the appropriate language for country of manufacturer of the vehicle!

@user-zd9wm8lx2k Clean and scarpe around the spark plug base. Soak it in penetrating fluid. Heat the crap out of spark plug hole then pull it out with a square extractor. Works every time

Years ago you hardly heard of a broken spark plug. I think they are made to break.

@@MrBeard-ig5zc Years ago it was common to replace plugs pretty often. They’d wear down or foul along with the cap and rotor wearing. Now they’re intended to go for 100,000 or longer. But, often get ignored until it starts running bad. By that time the plugs have had several years to really seize in the hole as well as rust away on the outside. Even with modern stuff I still want to change the plugs about every 70K. It seems like at that point there’s a little wear on the plugs so it’s worth changing, but they haven’t been in there so long it’s a pain changing them.

@@NBSV1 Absolutely true. Spark plugs need to be changed just like you say. By the time they actually start misfiring, the coils have been exposed to much higher firing voltages due to the excessive gap, that coil may not have died if the plugs had been replaced at 70k and the plugs would not have been so rotten that one broke.

Yep the exhaust into the cat converter is a pain. A torch is the only way to to any exhaust work.

Even when battery tools can do the same job they will still be much larger and heavier. Air tool power to weight/size ratio is second only to percussive tools. However, there aren’t a lot of situations where a firearm is the right tool for fixing anything.
