Well, I disagree that no one else comes close (that is, I disagree with myself). Art Tatum was The King. And Phineas Newborn was surely no slouch. But Chucho Valdez is undoubtedly one of the greatest pianists who ever lived.
Roberto A. Paneque
Very good pianist, but...too technique and not enough musical for me...Too much technique is not necessary in jazz...One must be musical above all and I think he is not. He has a "cold" way of playing. That's just my opinion.
I don't think you can really compare Chucho with Camilo. They are both exceptional musicians with DIFFERENT styles of playing. You can disect the technique all you like but ask yourself one question: Do they do what they do well? I think both Chucho and Camilo are exceptional at what they do. At this point all you can really comment on is if their playing panders to your tastes.
Remember to judge a musician by what you are hearing, NOT what you are seeing! Music is about sound, so thats why I Think they´re both incredible musicians, no matter the technique they use (chucho and camilo). If you can move the people´s feelings playing with your nose is OK for me. Greetings for Chucho and Camilo!
his technique is amazing, and rhythmically the hes playing the key keyboard like a drummer plays drums!what fucks with me is how are these guys able to keep both hands independent of eachother as they improvise! I am trying right now and its IMPOSSIBLE!
I understand you! :-) Can u address me to any vid on youtube about serbian jazz? eastern europe has a lot to say on this music, I realized in prague, moscow and bucuresti: I bet in belgrade too. Thanks in advance sahabg
Hei !!! In 2001 i just finished a meeting in a San Diego hotel at 0230 am :-( when this monster arrived and started playing for the fun of it ... A quieter performance but for me alone. Call me lucky !!!
@DedeWalter hey you are wrong but as you said is your opinion , a recomend you read the history of him playing piano and you will change your opinion im sure about that.
Heard this at a lounge/bar real chill, alot of music, art, and when this guy hit the playlist everyone just slowly stopped talking down to a whisper when his amazing music infiltrates your frontal cortex.
He had Classical training like Oscar, Brubeck, Hancock, Nina Simone, etc. You need to see him live to appreciate his range and power. He can make a robot dance.
Oscar Peterson se los come a todos. Arte del Piano? Martha Argerich, Michelangeli, y Dinu Lipatti.
yeah I recognized it a long time ago lol! My sister's boyfriend played that song and when I heard Chucho play it I was like I know that song lol! i think the name of the song is Solfeggietto
I can't believe that I commented on this video 13 years ago! I got inspired by this melody and it sticked into my unconscious mind and I was hunger to play this type of music. Five years later I learned the montuno and now and can play a bit like this style! insane how we got inspired by artists!
once in 2005, I lended my electric piano to him, when he was installing I apologized because it was an electric piano, and he was so kind telling me it was a beautifull piano...and really it was full of music!! he accompanied diferent singers, every body wanted be able to say to their grand children: once Chucho accompanied me! and it was very touching how he would erase himself to give place to de the singers, really accompanied the singers, he didn't put himself forward, all the opposit...and talking with a glass in our hands he remembered me, he could do this because he lived in Cuba. There was a great percussionist at the feast, he put a glass of wine over the piano and I pointed out it was not good, he apologize and then carried on talking to another cuban saying: I can go and live in Miami, I will sell a million discs, but, you know, next year my music is not so good...is like that...you look for...and what can I do? do sheet to keep my standard of life? I prefer to rest in Cuba and do whatever I want!! Of course I wrote in the piano the date and the fact that Chucha had played my electric piano, because sometimes other consertist would seat and say: ...it's a pitty is an electric one... Toroshit!! Jallalla Chucho!! He has put a beautiful concert in facebook to help to overcome the Covid...Gracias maestro!!
