Chuck Haga, veteran journalist and adjunct professor in the Department of Communication, was the ceremony’s guest speaker at the University of North Dakota’s summer commencement ceremony on Friday, Aug. 2, at the Chester Fritz Performing Arts Center.
Born and raised in Valley City, N.D., Haga entered UND as a freshman in 1967. After time away from his studies to work and start a family, he earned a bachelor’s degree in History in 1976 and a master’s degree in Modern European History in 1978.
He also studied Norwegian emigration history, language and newspapers at the University of Oslo from 1978 to 1979 on a Rotary Foundation fellowship.
While a student at UND, Haga served as editor of the student newspaper, the Dakota Student, from 1969 to 1971. This experience led to a career in journalism - starting as a reporter for the Grand Forks Herald, then working as a staff writer for the Star Tribune of Minneapolis-St. Paul.
After 20 years with the Star Tribune, Haga returned to the Herald in 2007 until his retirement in 2013. Since 2022, Haga has written a weekly column for the Herald.
In 2012, Haga began teaching news writing classes as an adjunct professor in the UND Department of Communication.
Haga has a son, Peter, and three grandchildren, Morgan, Emma and Mason, the latter of whom is a UND engineering graduate.
