After Marines poured from landers and onto the beaches at Iwo Jima, Pvt. Chuck Tatum and his unit pushed ahead to Motoyama Airfield, where a mortar round killed Gunnery Sgt. John Basilone as he returned to Tatum's position with reinforcements. Tatum later wrote about his experiences on Iwo Jima. His memoir, "Red Blood, Black Sand," was used as a reference for the HBO miniseries "The Pacific," premiering 9 p.m. Sunday.

Mr Tatum always looked about 30 years younger than he was. What a man he was. I think what kept him so young in spirit is the exhilaration he chased for so many years. A legendary Marine, a legendary racer, a legendary man. From bow to stern he was a truly remarkable man. Warms my heart to have come across this video today.

Your nervous laughter says it all. You're remembering hell and damn happy that you lived through it but at the same time it seems like you're about to cry. Thank you, Mr. Tatum and all the vets who had to do what no one should have to do but they did it anyway for their buddies and for us. (though at the the time they were only trying to stay alive)

Semper Fi Chuck Tatum, wish I could have met you. Also among the Iwo Marines was a BAR Man named Burt Taylor my sweetheart's Dad. I was fortunate to know him for a few years. Also a humble Marine, you wouldn't a thought he'd been a Marine BAR man but of course he was. Evelyn his daughter, and I were their when he was given full military honors at the Phoenix National Cemetery, Semper Fi Burt, Chuck, John, and All the Marines! Also Semper Fi to My Dad John Hall.

Anyone who could survive an inferno like Iwo Jima is beyond our simple understanding. I think we all have a duty never to forget what they did and what they suffered.

Most likely this statement will always seem to come off as hyperbole, or making them out to be ‘supermen’ of one type or another. The men themselves without fail would deny it or redirect it to someone else - But generally (and also sometimes specifically) speaking, it also is the unavoidable & absolute truth. The ‘Greatest Generation’ very much earned that nickname. Because looking at WW II & what actually WAS at stake as a whole, Mr Tatum & his comrades from each & all of our armed services quite literally saved the world. As time passes we need to make a point of ensuring that our younger generations are never allowed to not know what these men did. Their actions in battle both individually & also with each other. What they sacrificed and too often lost as a result. Sounding as if it’s ‘hyperbole’ after all is only possible due to the immense task they each had in front of them. Men such as Mr Tatum, Gunny Basilone, and the countless others that were just like them… well, they deserve much more than a paragraph in a textbook or a bank holiday or a parade. They deserve every honor we could bestow them with. And so incredibly sadly, with every day that passes we lose the opportunity to let them hear/see/know just how much we appreciate them.

Just checked my dad's old 5th Marine Division Book. It shows PFC. Charles(Chuck) Tatum 27th Marine Regiment awarded Bronze Star. My father fought the whole battle as well - he was with 5th Marine Div, 26th Marine Regiment. GySgt Basilone posthumously awarded Navy Cross. Word was some thought he should have been awarded a second MOH but due to the fact that he was of Italian heritage and we had been at war with Italy it was not to be.
