Poor Hallar. He tried to defend himself from all the stax effects but kept getting shut down. Was curious to see how Hallar was going to do. Good job tho! Great Games.
Yeah, Ben definitely didn't perform that loop correctly. As presented in the video, he would deck himself. Curio could bounce Chulane, but he needed it to generate mana from Cradle. Plus, he'd need to bounce different lands in order to pay non green mana costs for his creatures, so if Cradle was anywhere in the bottom 40 cards in his deck or so, he would lose. Probably required an Alluren to win. Even so, once you get to draw your deck, the likelihood of losing isn't high as long as you play it correctly, which the described loop in the video wouldn't suffice, I think.
I was trying not to speak a novel so I probably abbreviated some stuff. I can win with that loop as long as Crop Rotation, Aluren and Cradle aren't in the bottom three of my deck. I get all my one drops out along the way, which is 10 creatures. I draw into Cradle as the fourth card from the bottom and put it on the battlefield with the Chulane trigger (library has three cards). I tap Cradle for at least 11 mana and cast Aluren. Now I can cast pretty much every creature in my deck as many times as I want. I cast some other creature drawing a card (two cards left in deck) and putting a land on the battlefield. Overburden triggers and I bounce Cradle. I cast some other creature for free and draw a card (one card left in deck) and put Cradle onto the battlefield. Cast Eternal Witness for free drawing the last card in the deck and putting some land onto the battlefield. When Witness enters, Overburden, Cloudstone Curio, and Eternal Witness trigger. I bounce some non-Cradle land with Overburden and Chulane with Curio. I get back Finale of Devastation with the Eternal Witness trigger I then proceed to cast all other three or less mana creatures from my hand for free (except Shrieking Drake and Whitemane Lion) and tap Cradle for something like 22 mana. I now have at least 29 green mana in pool and like 22 creatures which is more than enough to kill the table with a Finale of Devastation. The chances of my bottom three cards being Crop Rotation, Aluren, and Gaea's Cradle are roughly (1/n)^3 where n is the number of cards left in my library. at 75 cards in deck, this is roughly a 1 in 400,000 chance of my bottom three being exactly so. So yes, it wasn't deterministic exactly how I said it, but it was close enough not to make everyone want to sit there for 20 minutes while I did it card by card for a 1 in 400,000 chance I'd get screwed. This isn't even counting other lines I could have drawn into on the way like Lotus Cobra, Earthcraft, etc. which make my chances of fizzling even lower. Like I said, I wasn't trying to speak a novel when I was explaining my win because I wanted to keep it simple for the video. I probably mentioned I could with with either Finale of Devastation or Destiny Spinner when I was describing my win condition and they went with Destiny Spinner in the video which requires me to cast all my enchantments and get all my lands out. This is doable if I use Curio and some other enchantment to bounce Overburden along the way and continue my line with Curio until I hit Cradle. I'd probably also have to use Earthcraft or Lotus Cobra to get the blue and white mana to do that.
@@Kumathebear726, of course it was Kuma playing it. Lol. Yeah, no worries my dude. Like I said, once you get the loop it's very hard for you to lose. I think we just had a really simple description of your win in the video.
@@yanjia1777 Most likely, yes. Once I hit Cradle and can start netting mana with the loop, I can use Curio and another enchantment to bounce the Overburden. After that, I can use floating mana from Cradle to continue the loop while putting my other lands on the battlefield and casting the rest of my enchantments. If Cradle is low enough in my library I might not have enough triggers to do this, but I still had Finale of Devastation available to me
@@magnuslayton8827, yeah, but we never saw it. That's my point. He had the win for sure, but the description in the video doesn't accurately portray how he'd win.
Have you ever done an analysis of the most Valuable card over all your games? I’d be curious To see what the most valuable of the most valuable card is.
@@PlayingWithPowerMTG he wouldn't get arbitrary mana without chulane on the field. He is limited to x number of loops where x is his deck size. And this depends on at which point he draws gaea cradle. Shouldn't have allowed the shortcutting as this was not a deterministic loop.
@@Zephyrferret-v7g the chulane player presented the loop to draw through until they got the cradle and cast cloudstone and two dorks. With that loop, every cradle was netting 5+ green mana each dork cast. It would have been trivial to: - Draw through the deck - Make 5+ green mana each cast of a dork with chulane dropping cradle - Bounce chulane at any point to stop the draws and prevent decking - aluren could be cast to drop all the 3 or less drops (which is almost every creature) - eternal witness to get finale and kill everyone that way or channel through spinner as they did Once they got cradle, that was all that needed to be seen
I'm happy to see a chulane deck win. I pilot a build not to far off from this, minus curio and a few others. For a more direct approach with a group mill back up
Okay, I'm not even close to finishing this video. Just want to jump right in and say that starting a game with Chalice, Sphere, Drannith, Study and a Moon on the Field is absolutely hilarious. Love it
@@kevindinh3584 yeah, but more likely they hit a mana rock or a piece of interaction. I see where you're coming from though, I always feel nervous casting a chaos warp
@@wjjajshshdbdnnsndhbauhwhshs There aren't many in red though. It can be nice to have a last resort counter for something like an Ad Naus in a supposedly uninteractive red deck.
@@wjjajshshdbdnnsndhbauhwhshs I guess? I'd still argue that cards can be a staple for a given colour if they are strong enough in mono-colour or two-colour strategies. That said, Tibalt's probably isn't strong enough outside of RG or RB, so perhaps you're right.
How many enchantments are in the Chulane deck? At the time he only had 3 enchantments on board so his lands would've been 3/3's with trample...hardly a game winning effect. Seemed a bit sloppy tbh.
didn't he also have finale in the graveyard, when he casts all his creatures and lands I'm sure he runs cards like noxious revival or ethernal witness to get back to finale to make them super huge 😊
@@official_uhuexactly, this was just the shortcut, but there was enough there. I wouldn't even call it sloppy, it's just not taking 30 minutes to resolve what can be seen as a win.
There are 12. Yeah, I was being a little sloppy because I wanted to show that it was trivially easy for me to win without spelling out every last step. I would have cast all my enchantments before using Destiny Spinner
Running a similar chulane deck....I find his way of winning through combat using Destiny spinner alot of loops when you library is already empty and you can win with a jace or a laboratory maniac...but I do love the new way I learned to close the game trough combat with it...was mostly using it for the uncounterable effect...great episode!!!
actually destiny spiner won't make land very large because it still have to count the number of enchantment.but that won't effect the game anyway.good game!
I'm fresh new to commander (diving into competitive and casual at the same time, since I like things to be balanced) and I just had a little level up moment. When Finale of devastation was cast for 3 I said "uh oh, silence time!".
I've heard of basically all the legendaries from recent sets. But Dominaria just has so many weird niche ones. I'm curious what the gameplan of Hallar is - there's got to be some combo with kicker spells?
"Interesting choices" is right. I don't understand why Greg would kill the Magus of the Moon when it is slowing his opponents down. He could have just fetched for a basic land and actually gotten ahead of the Deretti and Chulane players.
@@passprioritypodcast Mishra's Workshop tapping for 1 mana definitely slows Deretti down. A blood moon also slows Chulane down more than it does for a 4 color deck with partners, especially if you have a mana dork on the field. Greg could have fetched for a basic and have access to 3 colors on turn 3 while slowing down 2 of the players at the table.
I have a question about the Patreon tournament League, so if we become one how and when do we play with other people? Do we just message the discord and sees who’s online to play or is there set times? Thanks and great gameplay!!!
Curious as to how he won using destiny spinner as it doesn't give +x+x equal to your number of enchantments, but instead is a static gets x,x where x is the number of enchantments. I am sure they could have won via a finale of devastation instead so it doesn't really matter, but destiny spinner doesn't quite work that way.
The second I saw that Thras/Vial had Thoracle, I guessed the deck wouldn't win. Your habit of not showing any Thoracle wins lately is pretty much spoilers for decks that do run it.
Would be nice if you would learn to pronounce it correctly, I mean the Eldraine set is almost entirely based in Gaelic and Celtic mythology, so pronouncing the name right would be just the right thing to do. It's Kul-in.
It is pronounced correctly. It's a common misnomer to call it "hullen". We spoke with a person from Ireland and he confirmed that the proper pronunciation was in fact "Choo-Lane".
