Chunky Kitten Bellies: Good or Bad?

It’s 3 in the morning, barely got home from work and tired as hell but I gotta know… JUST how chonky a kitten should be …

I currently have a rescue kitten that was on deaths door from starvation. He's slowly putting on weight but he's still so skinny. Can't wait for him to become chonky too

The unhealthy tummy kittens also have unhealthy-looking fur. I'm sure this doesn't always go hand-in-hand but chances are a kitten with worms will be less likely to have healthy fur, healthy energy, etc

I'm currently working night shift in my local hospital so I'm silently squealing "oh my god look at the adorable fluffy little tum tums!!!! Kiss them and hug them and love them all up" But silently, so still dignified like

A healthy chonk is so much better than a sick bloated or skinny kitten,my girl would not gain weight,she was emaciated and it took her a long time to bounce back with the proper treatments,I'd give anything to see her being a chonky baby. Thankfully she's doing amazing now!

One of my current fosters, Honeybee, just turned four weeks (I took him and his brother in at 8 days) and weighs about 510 grams! He’s totally healthy, and is such a chonker. 🍐🥰🥑🐱💞 Oh, he did have a constipation issue at around two weeks and had bad chonks, but after a butt load of meds and late-night poop seshes, he is now in the good chonks zone.

The distended bellies seem to cause a crease at the thighs whereas the transition for the healthy bellies to the back leg looks much softer

I had a kitten that had a big round hard tummy once, I was still a teen so I'm not sure exactly why it was but I think we were told she had an allergy to the food she was on and we had to switch her diet. It was all just bloating and gas and she was much better after that!

I took my first kitten to the vet for this same reason and she took an x-ray and basically just told me that my cat is just fat. Then she handed me the bill.

I am a young kitten foster father, i am only 16 and have been fostering kittens for about 2 years on my own, one of my kittens were rejected by his mother because he developed constipation, seeing this video helped me to identify the issue and treat him. You genuinely saved my kittens life, keep it up (His name is Winny, Winny the Pooh and he is now a thriving 5 week old, thank you!)

The first two kittens with bloated bellies were also quite lethargic, unlike the lively healthy ones. Also: KITTENS AREN'T SUPPOSED TO BE SKINNY!!! They need food and proper nutrition to grow up healthy and into their full size, undernourished kittens doesn't grow well (though that shouldn't surprise anyone).

I never thought I would get a cat before I started watching your vids. Holding off for a year to check it's not an impulse decision but it's been a few months so think I'll be adopting in Feb (summer for us)

Thank you for filling my work break with kitten tummies. I didn't know I needed this.

My Doerak* was a chunky tumtum too. But he got TOO chunky when he got a wee bit older, and I found out he was one to eat eat eat eat eat. Aha. So.. I had to actually limit his food intake so he could grow into his size. Became a healthy boy of 6 kgs in the end :) Had to let him go way too soon at 9 years old, barely made his b-day. :( Haven't dared another cat anymore since.. ten years of health problems (his brother), and now my own health is a factor and then the financial side of things, SHOULD something go wrong. I want to be able to just go to the vet and not think twice. I have always been able to do that thank goodness, but there is a bottom in that well *laughs I will enjoy other people's pets even more, that is for sure! :)

Round plump and hard kitten tummies are not good because it means that they could have worms. I know this because we rescued a kitten who was dumped outside in a Lowe’s parking lot. Ahe had so much wrong with her but she survived! Not to mean toon she was out in the middle of a snowy winter for a week as a 6 week old! She was a trooper!

My foster is an old lady stray, and despite having horrible matts and a frostbitten tail, she came to the shelter at a pretty chonky weight with a serious primordial pouch (aka flop sack). I don't think she's that fat--I can feel her rips and spine quite well--but she's certainly not underweight. I didn't understand how until I saw her catch and eat a miller moth.

I came here specifically to see kitten tummies and I was not disappointed. 😻

The kitten my husband found this year had a bloated belly. Even after being thoroughly treated for parasites she was still bloating and farting. We found a common denominator. Any time she ate chicken. So we changed her diet to Blue Buffalo Basics limited ingredient turkey and potato recipe. We also still give her fish from Applaws. She's no longer bloated or gassy at all. She's also one lucky little kitty in general. She survived many things, including parvo.

On Wednesday…. a kitten appeared on my porch…. haven’t seen any stray cats around for over a year…. I guess I have a second cat now. My first cat, a huge ginger with social anxiety, is TERRIFIED of the little kitty 🤣🤣🤣

It would be great if you would discuss FIP, because it is a devastating illness for young cats and kittens. I lost my 3-year-old cat 2 weeks ago. A distended belly, fever, and lethargy is a hallmark sign.

I’m really glad I got my kittens from an excellent rescue organisation and they only adopt out once they know the kittens are healthy. The work Hannah, and all those like her around the world, do is invaluable. Knowing what to look for, how to treat it and making sure a kitten is healthy is so important. Thank you Hannah and all the other Hannahs, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

You can also see that the healthy kittens are very curious, they're looking around and squirming and playing, while the unhealthy kittens are more lax and just sort of lie there while being held. The poor babies probably don't have the energy to move :( hope they are all in good homes now!

Found a kitten near my backyard, cried all night and was around one month old all alone. Finally caught her that day and noticed that she was really fat and bloated, she was too young to be pregnant, never had a foster kitten with such a big belly before cause she looked malnourished and rough so we were intrigued and worried about her well-being so we took her to the vet! Around 7 months right now looking healthy and in her right weight

Our youngest Oreo had a huge belly and was always crying. The vet gave him medicine but didn't know what it was and he was only 4 weeks old. Turned out it was gas, we used infant baby drops on his kitten bottles and he farted it out, but boy did it smell. Oreo is not a healthy nearly one year old fluffy thing. :)

Yesterday I lost a foster kitten. The shelter believes he had Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) which is nearly always fatal and there js no cure. Symptoms are vague but fluid in the abdomen is a symptom, and he had a very large tummy that was not squishy with no other symptoms of illness. I had assumed he was a healthy chunky baby, but thanks to this video and my research on FIP, I now have increased knowledge. It is so hard to lose a kitten, but learning more helps the healing. Rest in peace, Zack ❤️

Just wanted to thank you for putting out this video. I work in a shelter, and recently saw my first example of the water balloon tummy on a kitten. She'd been in our ringworm ward for several months, and apart from the ringworm always looked healthy and fuzzy even if she was always pretty small for her age. A few days ago I came in to clean, and noticed her bloated belly right away due to your video. I alerted the vets and she was unfortunately diagnosed with FIP and had to be put down :( But I appreciate you for putting this up so I could recognize immediately when something was wrong. I'd also like to say that this also applies to puppies as well! One of our puppies had a water balloon belly as well and is now being treated for tapeworms, but fortunately has a good prognosis for recovery :)

Had to start making my cat homemade food, she has some type of food allergy and was loosing weight. Can’t wait for her to get her belly back.

The kitten I adopted from the shelter started getting a round belly, and very distended & not pooping much. Took her to the vet, she ended up having wet FIP. She's been on treatment since August- 1 shot a day for 84 days. Just finished treatment, and now is doing well.

I am fostering kittens and one just passed from pneumonia. and I am glad these videos are helpful

Can you please do a video about FIP? Two of my current fosters are FIP survivors, and through this experience and treatment I have learned that very few people in animal medicine know that FIP is TREATABLE. There needs to be more FIP education.

I just got my first kitten and he was so skinny when I got him from the rescuer. As he was taking the day to adjust he wasn't pooping or peeing, (well that's what I thought) and his belly was getting bigger and bigger. Today I found some poop in multiple places and I caught him peeing as well. So I am SO HAPPY that he is okay and his little chunky belly just means he is eating a lot better than he was where he was at. My precious baby looks just like the tuxedo kitten you showed. Thank you so much for this.

I raised a 2 week to 3 week year old kitten for a 8 days, and your videos helped a lot, I had to give it away but I fell in love with him so damm fast. And now I am just in love with kittens in general and this black one is cute too. I love all of them.
