The 1950s were also the time of one of the city’s most determined religious leaders, Bishop Lucey. He was appointed Bishop of Cork and Ross in 1954. He will be remembered principally for his dedication in establishing church-building schemes in Cork, resulting in the building of the Church of the Ascension at the Gurranabraher (1955); the Church of the Assumption Ballyphehane, (1956) and the Church of the Resurrection at Farranree (1958).
