It is official! The iconic Sir Winston Churchill called for the creation of a ‘United States of Europe’ in his famous 1946 Zurich speech and Presided the first European Federal Congress at the Hague in 1948. He was one of the key fathers of a united Europe and set in motion ideas and events which would develop and grow to become the European Union.
BRAND EU believes Churchill’s work for a united Europe and his 1946 speech are relatively unknown and important to revive on the eve of the 50th anniversary of his death. BRAND EU consider Churchill as one of the founding fathers of the European Union.

Wow, I had no idea Chuchill was so positive about the idea of the european union. That is awesome! He was ahead of his time and he was right too. Europe was torn by war for all its history. Thanks to the Union, we enjoy peace unknown to us ever before. Only together, as equals can we protect and expand this, no other solution, no empire, no forced rule has ever worked. No matter how many setbacks there will be, no matter how bumpy the ride, europe will stay united and stay on the road to a great and glorious future. Let Europe arise!

He was talking about the European continent, not the UK. He more or less said ( hear his exact words 16:45) that Great Britain and British Commonwealth, USA and Soviet Union should be friends and sponsor this new Europe. He obviously didn't actually want GB to be part of it.
@emmyntony
@emmyntony 8 лет назад
Fair enough, just going on what he said above, Council of Europe is a different entity with no binding power of law. Just to elaborate , GB is Great Britain (England Scotland and Wales under direct rule from Westminster at that time) British commonwealth is all the rest of the countries under British control at that time or had been under British control but stayed part of the Commonwealth. British Isles is a group of Islands off Europe including GB, Eire, Isle of Man and all the smaller islands etc. (But the Republic of Ireland no longer like to be called part of the British Isles for political purposes, even though geographically they are) UK is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Just a note, When we grew up in the fifties and sixties, even though we were the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, I cannot ever remember calling it UK, we just used to say Britain or Great Britain ( As the stickers for the cars that went abroad showed GB)

A common misconception. "I have preferred not to stress this point, so as to leave to others the task of inviting us. One must not give the impression that we wish to control Europe, even though it is clear that only Great Britain is capable today of guiding her properly. Or perhaps we invite Russia first, which will refuse, and in that case Britain will be able to join." - Churchill - 18 Sept. 1946 (responding to a question from Legationsrat Cuttat on the night before giving his Zurich speech) It is true that his first priority was to unite France and German though.

I wonder what Churchill would think of the modern EU. We have achieved a loose confederation here in Europe, which is what he to an extent wanted. But he didn't want Britain to be part of it, but then again, Britain lost its empire, so maybe he would be happy with it?

He was a visionary. He proposed to unite Europe to finally reach peace and prosperity. And took as example the federal structure and nature of an other european country like Switzerland to solve the problem of Europe. He was a visionary because as a matter of fact now the functioning of the EU is quite similar in many ways and in some points to the system they have in Switzerland... Yet there is still a lot to do...
@Fourbrick
@Fourbrick 8 лет назад
Agreed- he was a visionary. Listen to the last sentence. He didn't want Britain in the new United States of Europe.
@paull373
@paull373 7 лет назад
That sentence was in reference of the immediate aims; he doesn't exclude the UK, he just doesn't mention it there. He clearly intended to include the UK at some future time, as the whole point was to bring all the powerful European nations together and to prevent war. He also expected there to be practical issues re the Common Wealth. "We cannot aim at anything less than the *Union of Europe as a whole*, and we look forward with confidence to the day when that Union will be achieved.’"
@dan710i
@dan710i 7 лет назад
Fourbrick I think it was more a matter of he was looking from the perspective of a leader of a British colonial empire which spanned the globe. Britain was a global empire when he gave this speech and a global empire to which much of the credit of an allied victory in WWII was owed. That is not Britain today. I think Winston would have thought strategically that Britain now has similar interests to France and Germany and would want to stop them from dominating a bloc Britain should be a leader in.

Ah yes, the classic Brexiteer "lets take his reasoning out of context". As Paul mentioned, his reasoning was that a united Europe is an equal Europe. The Brits trying to crowbar their way in, could be seen as Brits trying to take control of Europe (due to their history). He wasn't wrong, the French blocked British entry for years, with this exact reasoning. Sadly, the French were right and the Brits were never happy about not getting everything they wanted.

Winston Churchill 1953: “Where do we stand? We are not members of the European Defence Community, nor do we intend to be merged in a Federal European system. We feel we have a special relation to both. This can be expressed by prepositions, by the preposition ‘with’ but not ‘of’ - we are with them, but not of them. We have our own Commonwealth and Empire.”

The usual misrepresentations. Churchill did not include the UK as part of Europe, he didn't suggest the UK being part of the Europe he advocated. No, it did not become the EU it became the Council of Europe, who created the European Court of Human Rights. This speech was in Zurich Switzerland. Switzerland are still one of the 47 member states of the COE, a true union for peace.
@TechTehScience
@TechTehScience 3 года назад
"A true union for peace" You mean one lacking any power. Several members of the Council of Europe do not follow its own European Court of Human Rights. Ironically, excluding Poland and Hungary which the EU has been butting heads with, the members found to constantly follow the European Charter of Human Rights are... drum roll... EU members that are also CoE members! Why is this you ask? Because the Council of Europe has no power to enforce. A member can just... ignore the charter. What are they going to do? Nothing because there's also very little benefit to being a part of the Council of Europe. Meanwhile the EU has adopted the European Charter of Human Rights and does far better in enforcing it. This is, of course, another Euroskeptic argument that falls limp. There's a good reason people often forget the Council of Europe exists. Also, your mentioning is bullshit seeing as Churchill was quite happy with the creation of the ECSC which has nothing to do with the Council of Europe and is instead the predecessor of the EEC which led to the EU.
@amidreaming2
@amidreaming2 5 лет назад
The formation of Council of Europe which now has 47 member European Countries. The EU is a different kettle of fish, which morphed in 1993 and has 27 members. Please do not confuse the two. Also the logo on the flag is from Council of Europe, adopted by the EU. The anthem 'ode to joy' is CoE, as is Europe Day. The EU are fooling those not aware and trying to take credit for others achievements. We are and always will be members of CoE. We do not need to be a member of the EU to trade across Europe.

Churchill's vision of the United States of Europe did not include a tyranny of a gang of 7 not democratically elected individuals running it but a fully elected body similar to that which he saw in the United States of America. In fact when extolling the potential virtues of such a union in 1946 he stated that this would hopefully prevent the emergence of such tyrannies.

Wonder if Churchill envisaged that The UK would need tower block Cities the size of Birmingham to be built EVERY YEAR and housing developments in his back garden and that our population should reach 70 or 85 million with our FARMS and GREEN BELTS covered in Concrete and tarmac , our schools full to the gunnels and our NHS almost BROKE with Sharia law he deplored being practised in many towns in the UK. in a land hardly Green and very unpleasant ... How much do we have to contribute for translations in Brussels and in the UK??He would never freeze due to lack of heating and where would he store all the nuclear waste coming out of HInckley point alone? As for SWITZERLAND, it cares not a jot and gladly accepts the stolen hordes of murderous and corrupt Dictators which is how its wealth is made in that home for the super rich.Did they not destroy all the documents re: the Jewish pre WW2 investments. Churchill wanted a democratic Europe and he never for a second expected this vague idea of a federation that he spoke about to include Great Britain. In the decades after his death in 1965, technology has advanced to the point that risks of further military confrontations - tanks, trenches, massed divisions of infantry - between France and Germany, something leaders like Edward Heath and Conrad Adenauer truly believed were real, have finally come to an end. The horrors of recent European history are THE RESULT OF attempts to form a grand union of all the peoples of Europe. Napoleon's attempt led to carnage. So did Hitler's. The current fiasco has given us Greece. A nation consuming its own capital like some down and out eating his own shoe leather. The humiliation of being invaded by Germany, merely without the death toll.
