I love the fact that Janelle is up dancing to it! Why can't people just accept the fact that we are ALL different and that is what makes the human race so BEAUTIFUL. The day I come on RU-vid and don't see any negative BS I will rejoice. This cover is amazing, she shone in her own unique way as does Janelle when she performs.x
I loved seeing Janelle standing throughout. She's a class act! The rest of what you said is so true, also--the things which separate us are never significant.
they fuckin killed it! brought their own sound to it... this is fuckin brilliant in so many levels... her singing may be off in a couple places, but the emotion compensates. fuck yes loving this band.
i am not usually into slowed down versions of songs that are very upbeat but damn this is amazing. very rich, haunting sound. and janelle had such a blast. how cute.
Pretty much every cover they do is a departure from the original sound, which is pretty great in my opinion. I would say it's far more difficult to create your own interpretation of a song and have it sound good than to imitate the original.
when i heard chvrches covered tightrope i thought it would be weird cuz tightropes really funky and chvrches are pretty synthesized but surprisingly this works!
Lauren must have been quite nervous playing in front of Janelle and other women she looks up to. She certainly seemed relieved when Janella hugged her at the end. Lauren sang wonderfully while Iain and Martin performed admirably. Sincere and talented.
I love it! They really brought their own signature sound to it. I love it when bands do covers that are uniquely their own, rather than just trying to emulate the original performance.
Why is that when artists are covering eachothers works or even being compared in general, people get defensive and feel like they have to leave shitty comments about how A is better than B? It's sad.
I think it's strange that people always have to compare which one is better. Covers are not meant to sound alike nor better, the meaning of a cover is to appreciate the original artist and to show your own interpretation of the song. It's kind of a tribute. It's a mix of your own creativity and the original's.
Wow. Really love this. I don't compare it to the original, it's a original by itself, it's more than an mere cover the whole song's changed. Cheers you sweet artistic guys !
After all these years I finally realized that the difference between the original and this cover is with the original you want to get up and dance to it, while this version I want to cry to because of how beautifully melancholy it is.
Some of you people are such snobs. You aren't some music guru because you hate everything. It's a cover, relax. Janelle herself is in the crowd enjoying this and feeling proud that a band is covering her song. Being a nit picky critic doesnt make you smart.
I absolutly LOVE Janelle since she first came out and I think this cover is amazing. You cannot compare artists, it doesn't make any senses just try to enjoy the different feelings that a different version of a song brings in you. There's also a lot of respect in this performance and I'm glad that I discovered Chvches through it
Chvrches took an already great song and put their own unique spin on it. They slowed it down, put all of the focus on the vocals (her voice is really lovely and it really does need to be showcased), and then added some laid back, chill instrumental parts to back her up. AND THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THEM DOING THAT... For some reason people always think slow has to be super emotional or dramatic, but that's not the case. The tempo of a song doesn't dictate the mood of the song. But, anyway, this is a great cover of Janelle's song. No, it may not be what you want it to be, but based on most of the negative comments about it, a lot of y'all might as well stop listening to covers all together. A cover shouldn't sound exactly like the original; there's no point to a cover if there are no new, original ideas brought to it. A cover should reflect the sound and ideas of the person making it, and this performance does exactly that. Also, Janelle seems to really enjoy their take on HER song, so there's no need to trash this cover and say things like "nobody should touch Janelle's music" when Janelle HERSELF obviously approves of it. /endrant
I love this version. Chvrches made the song more to their style and it total works. Amazing chilled vibe. I listened to the original and it's not really my type of style. But here is the difference between me and all the haters. I don't say that any version is rubbish. We are all different and it's not for me or anyone else to start putting another artist down.
Lol youe sitting here critiquing someone's opinion of zomething. Yoyr hating on the haters. You've lives long enough to become the villa. Of yoyr one comment
I wasn't sure how to feel about it when she first began, but eventually I got into it. I wouldn't call this a fantastic cover, but I feel like she did the song justice.
Oh, this is amazing. Discovered Janelle Monáe in late 2011, then Grimes was next to blow my mind in late 2013, then Daughter captivated my emotions in June 2016 followed by MØ in July, and now CHVRCHES :)
I think the draw of Chvrches is that while they may not be technically "perfect" in their musicality, they have an enigmatic quality that is impossible to duplicate.
Love how this performance exhibits the versatility of an amazing song. To take the song and place the emphasis on the verses creates a truly CHRVCHES rendition. It may not be the original but who honestly wanted to see Lauren attempt her best Janelle Monae? Power in diversity.
Why is anyone comparing CHVRCHS to Janelle? Its a cover. Its supposed to sound different. I think they did an excellent job in making it their own sound.
