Thank you for the honest review. I’ve been watching your channel for a while. I really appreciate your practical approach to surfboards. Yes, that Fishbeard would probably go great on the occasional trip to a point break. But so would your Seaside, Glazer, Flat Earth, traditional fish, etc. And if those other boards are significantly better paddlers, and handle smaller conditions better, that means the Fishbeard will just be taking up space.
@SkipperSurfReview
@SkipperSurfReview 2 года назад
Thanks for watching! Yeah, the glazer is great, good foam up front as well as the Seaside.

My 6'0 goes well in clean small waves. I feel like the board paddles well for the extra performance it offers. I would be surfing it with keels in small slow stuff and uprights in anything chest high or above.

Mate was surprised with your review, however each to their own…I’m riding a 6’6 custom in Sydney and love the board, design and feel.. on bigger days it carves beautifully on the AM keels, cheers

Thanks for the info! I'm pretty sure it works great once you have the right size wave with power. Have you tried CI Twin Pin? I would personally take that one over Fishbeard. It paddled faster and also had more control, less squarely for sure.

I don't know if it's necessary to mention, but transitioning from a Mid length to short performance type board takes time. If your an older intermediate or novice surfer especially as you said paddling and catching waves will be a struggle regardless of wave quality. Short board to mid length easy, mid to short is another story.
@SkipperSurfReview

Totally agree.. or longboard to a mid length is another story too! Thanks for the insight!

You need a proper groveler for the waves you surf. Btw what brand of shark deterrent do you use? None of the performance boards by CIS will paddle well from my experience. They’re made for rippable wave surfing in mind and not ease of paddling.
@SkipperSurfReview
@SkipperSurfReview 2 года назад
Totally agree. The Fishbeard was sold immediately. LOL. If I was on DaveySKY SKiff, I would've scored 100%. I use Sharkbanz. It wasn't very comfortable wearing it. I may have to get used to it or just not bother it at all. We had a pretty intense month with sharks but it's kinda quiet now. May be they have swam down the coast. The CI Twin Pin have paddled way better.. it was still a performance twin that needed a good wave to perform better.

@@FluffyAlpaca81 Yeah, even if you see the dimensions .. I would ideally like to ride 5'5" when it comes down to fishy outline. .but it's way too small for me @25L of volume, I will be drowning while paddling.

@frank potion hey man! No, it wasn’t really comfortable and to be honest, I felt more vulnerable surfing with that thing. We have no sharks now so nobody freaks out yet. May be if it gets too bad I’ll get it again. The G skate would change your perspective on performance boards from CI😁

I was thinking of doing the review on the logs.. Do you think more like a noseriders?
@ChadAtkinson
@ChadAtkinson 2 года назад
I don't think it has to be noserider specifically And you have done some great content in the past with options like Lovelace models or the Plasmic Your location - and skillset - doesn't suit boards like CI Fishbeard or HI Mid 6. Channels like Surf Craft Union are a better example of boards for your location. A few of us have mentioned a board like the CJ Nelson Outlier as one you should try Thank you for sticking your neck out for the benefit of others For me, I prefer seeing regular surfers that spend a bit of time with board - not just a session or two - surfing waves appropriate for the board. I have bought way too many boards that didn't suit my skill set and after to little time with them. I have realised I need to focus on catching waves rather than buying boards
@calhun4481
@calhun4481 2 года назад
Hey Skipper, which do you prefer for small wave Album-Plasmic, Firewire-Seaside, Album-Sunstone, etc.
@SkipperSurfReview
@SkipperSurfReview 2 года назад
1-3 ft wind swells: DaveySKY Skiff, Mini Simmons Hydrodynamica, Arc Modern Simmons and Album Disorder (only when it’s 2 ft+). These are the boards that are proven to work in small/weak surf on the East Coast. But if it has more push like 3 ft 10s swell then I’d prefer to use Album Plasmic + Album Disorder. Hope this helps! I’d only surf the Seaside when it’s clean/semi clean 2-4 ft surf.

I see a lot of these selling second hand, must be why. Love your channel mate, and how long is your bike ride to the beach?
@FluffyAlpaca81
@FluffyAlpaca81 2 года назад
It’s a high performance fish. Think too many intermediates buy thinking it’s a good board for them but it’s rly just a HP fishy short board made for surfers who can rip and or surf good waves all the time.

Good review,. It seems like 90% of CI shortboards are made for pros, except the Average Joe.
@terenceingram7786
@terenceingram7786 2 года назад
I have only owned two CI's, the Neckbeard 2 (which the front half of the Fishbeard was based on) and the Rocketwide swallow. Both were in Spinetek. I would say the NB2 was an average paddler as it's narrow up front - but it's essentially a high performance board. Which is the DNA of the Fishebard. I loved riding my NB2, but not paddling it. The RW paddles fine and is really versatile. 2+1 (AMT fins) setup for smaller days or peaky waves, then riding it as a standard thruster (AM2 fins) in head high to double overhead waves. I would say the RW is accessible to everyone. Probably still a HP board for those of lesser ability and more of a small wave board for those of better ability. I think the challenge is the fact that most reviews are by excellent surfers who could essentially surf anything pretty well. My thinking is more about figuring out your local spot and buying appropriate boards for that spot that cover everything from shin high to double overhead. And avoid the "PRO" or the model. Don't be tempted at all. Ever. Yuri how about a video on your fav/ ultimate 2 or 3 board quiver for Rockaway. You could even reuse some of the surfing from previous videos to show why you like the chosen board. Keep the reviews coming. Enjoying the brutal honesty.

Don't know if the legacy can live up to the legend. Too many questionable results with the numbers of CAD collabs and mashups CI is churning out. Maybe it's time to bust out the planner and a block of foam.

Why wouldn’t you be able to paddle it…doesn’t sound right…it’s the same as the neck beard…for me, the neck beard is a great paddling board.
@SkipperSurfReview
@SkipperSurfReview Год назад
It’s because I compare it to my other boards in shorter size. For instance my 5’7” x 21 x 2.63 Album Disorder paddles twice faster than the FishBeard. The board is fun to ride once you get up and go. It most likely needs good wave with power, like Trestles or Rincon😜
