It's hard to believe this song and video came out in 1996. It's nearly 15 years old, but sounds like it could have come out yesterday. So fresh and timeless! This band was great!
How the hell...?!? This video is utterly mindbending. I mean really. The co-ordination and timing, and the single take -- a REAL single take, apparently -- complete with stunts and perfect synchronisation. Genius!!!
As insane as it may sound this duo has had a very interesting history. Miho Hatori (girl with short hair) sang for Noodle phase 1 for the band Gorillaz. Sean Lennon, John Lennons son was also a member for a time. In an interview they described with their music that they wanted to be less serious and sing about what they wanted in a "Crazy, snobby, sloppy" expressive way. To prove to others that the words in music don't always have to catch peoples interest and that as long as someone feels something along these lines to their music they've accomplished their goal of connecting with the audience. They break the barriers singing mostly about the pressure of societal racial standards. Truly underrated band.
My friend and I interviewed Cibo Matto (for KUCI) the year this came out at Spaceland in Silver Lake, right before their show. They were simply the coolest people I'd ever met - probably still are. I got to sit around during the mic check, and Miho basically sang Sugar Water in its entirety just to me. I pretty much melted. That same year I moved to Japan, and dropped out of western civilization - though I did end up seeing them again eventually. Always a lot of feels listening to this, and the Michel Gondry video is predictably creative and fun.
One of the most brilliant music videos I've ever seen. I vividly remember seeing this on MTV's "Amp" back in high school and it blew my mind. There is so much detail here, like the black cat going between the screens when a black cat is mentioned in the lyrics (how is it possible to have timed that??) is incredible.
Not only that but it crosses the characters' paths both times those lyrics are in the song, when it's a single video mirrored and reversed and it just lines up perfectly both times
For reference I just found crystal castles 10yr old song transgender and that song is a complete banger. This song however is absolutely horrible and annoying.
yesterday i watched this video again after more than 3 yrs without listening to them... i was thinking the song must be pretty symmetric also for this video to fit perfectly with the cat parts... It's still so damn beautiful..
I think out of all the bands that played at the bronze this one was the best! Their music matched the tone of the show and really set the mood perfectly!
I was looking for this song for so long. That scene from season 2 always stuck out in my mind. It's such a perfect song choice that feels emotionally perfect.
Well done, Warner Bros. Those links at 3:44 appear right over part of the video that is kind of a main "plot point" of it, completely ruining it for anyone watching. Well done.
michel gondry's ''image'' he wanted in this video was a story that made sense when played forwards and backwards. It's amazing how good a director he is! I really admire his genius x
Michel Gondry and Spike Jonze defined our generation in the 90’s and 00’s with their incredibly inventive styles fitting in with the most interesting artists first then turning their attention to feature films in the late 90’s. We owe them both so much. I’m in my early 40’s now playing music videos from both of them to my daughter to explain to her the era I grew up in.
My favourite music video of all times. I'm not kidding. Must've watched it 200 times, never got tired of it, always a little new detail to grasp. Just a piece of video heaven.
I was just thinking, actually, it sounds perfect for now, like it was written this year... Because they were friggin light years ahead of their time..... 🎶💜🎶 Damn.. I think this might be my fave song on Viva La Woman 💕🎶💕
Today I am listening to this song for the first time ever and I can't help but to have it on repeat. For all of you who obviously listened to this when it first came out...what was it like? what memories do you have of this era?
I love the scene with this song SOOOO much, even though I hate the prospect of Buffy ending up with Xander in that way. The music is just so hauntingly beautiful. I feel like I’m traveling the universe while I’m listening to this
@@Norsilca So many great ones to choose from... a decision where you can't lose! The White Stripes videos, Chemical Bros, Bjork, Daft Punk, even Kylie Minogue... all amazing.
10 years ago I was going through obscure late 90s and early 2000s underground female expirimental band CD's that I had collected, and was thinking to myself "such a shame these bands never saw the light of day or got any sort of recognition/radio play, I wonder if thats just how its going to be forever", and now all of the sudden they are getting listened to thanks to gen Z suddenly taking interest in the late 90s and early 2000s to the extent they have (without even realizing thats what they are doing) lol. So now it looks like there is hope for these lost gems and unique sounds after all!
Great song, on “Sugar Water”, they sample Ennio Morricone’s “Sospesi Nel Cielo” from the film score for the 1964 Italian subculture documentary I Malamondo.
I just discovered this song and I had to replay it after my first listen. Oh my god I can’t even imagine how many other songs I haven’t discovered yet that sound so cool. - 7:02pm Nov. 18, 2023
You can imagine, I've been a musician for decades...I'm 62 next yr...ran across this on tv's buffy the vampire slayer...from late 90s..and just so compelled to look it up. Amazing. These flat phones weld time and space together... love and peace to you this Christmas 🎄 ❤️
A classic #MichelGondry video for one of the most underrated bands to come out of the trip-hop movement of the mid-'90s. Thank gawd #CiboMatto came back this year with #HotelValentine . Such a wicked album, but all of their albums are worthy.
Thank you Buffy The Vampire Slayer 🙌🏾❤️ it’s 2021 and I’m still mesmerized by how she danced with Xander & suddenly struts out of the club passing Cordiella (pressed) Angel (bothered) Willow (confused) & leaves Xander (dumb founded) standing there ... The whole time this song is playing and is perfectly combined with the scene BUFFY HAD THEM ALL SHOOK
this song has mid 2000's trip hop vibes in the best way, they were definitely ahead of their time. the mv feels like 70's weird but in a quintessentially 90's way lol. im so glad i found this it's such a vibe !!!!
The first time i heard this song I loved it, the tones are amazing,,,and I just saw this music video for the first time and i am in awe , it's so well done and trippy af, these girls are a pair of unique and top tier artist.
I've watched this video numerous times recently and learning that it is Michel Gondry doesn't surprise me in the least. If the video is unique and blows your mind with movie magic that happens in camera than it is probably a Michel Gondry video.
