Norm happened to mention to a reporter that he had never made an upholstered piece of furniture. This led to an invitation to partner with Lee Industries of Newton, North Carolina, one of America's most highly regarded furniture makers. In the first of a special two-part program, Norm visits the Lee Industries factory to understand how upholstered chairs and sofas are made. He gets a tour with Norman Coley whose family has been making furniture in North Carolina for 40 years. Coley suggests Norm try making a "cigar" chair, which can be made without sewing and stitching. Back at the shop Norm starts by building the hard maple frame, the skeleton underneath this handsome chair.
In part two, Norm cuts the leather using patterns and tackles the padding and other steps before showing his newfound skill at applying the rich-looking leather to the frame. It's all about stretching, tacking, stretching, and re-tacking until the desired look is achieved. You'll be impressed with this project and may want.
Season: 15 | Episode: 4 & 5
Original Air Date: January 25 & February 1, 2003
This project requires a hardware kit that is no longer available and therefore cannot be completed as described:

I saw (1973) my grandmother dismantle & reupholster her living room set bought in the 50's. She took the parts out onto the flat roof of her apt building to sand & spray paint. She wasn't afraid to do anything. My cousin still has that set.

I wish upholstery was even close to as popular as woodworking. I've worked in leather for over a decade, but I only know a tiny bit about upholstery. The one time I did it was super satisfying. I want to learn so much more.

“Purists will be aghast at the use of plywood.” Correct. And brads. And wipe-on poly. Cheap, corner cutting crap that will fall apart (irreparably) while the quality original will live on for generations. A family heirloom my ass. Anyone with knowledge and taste will always know the difference, and will always care.

Before we use any power tools, let’s talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this: There is no more important safety rule, than to wear these, safety glasses.

One of the worst days of my life was having the eye doctor first try to find and then to dig out a tiny piece of Razor sharp, clear, hardened epoxy that was scratching the bejeezus out of my eye. I'm a professional woodworker by trade and I would NEVER turn on a single power tool without safety glasses on. All accidents can be prevented in hindsight, but protecting your eyes is so easy to do it's just pure lunacy not to do it. By the way, that epoxy got in my eye at the end of the day after I walked outside my shop and dusted myself off. I had been planing wood with embedded epoxy with an electric hand planer earlier that day and a tiny flake went in my eye when I dusted myself off. But even though that probably couldn't have been avoided as I never would have even thought of such an accident occurring, I never once since even considered operating tools or doing something that put my eyes at risk without wearing safety glasses. It's just not worth it. Doctor found the epoxy flake, gave me some wye drops and my eye was fine a couple days later but that was one of the most miserable physical things I've ever experienced. And I've cut myself every way you can imagine and broken all sorts of bones, but I would do any of those things again before I would go through that eye misery again.
