The air called "Port na Bpucai", which comes from the Blasket Islands and is a piece that was inspired by the sound of the whales that the island fishermen used to hear when out on their curraghs.
The tune was composed in 1873 by a Blasket Island fisherman/fiddle player, Muiris O'Dalaigh.
Also known as Caoineadh Na HInise, The Lament Of The Island, The Music Of The Fairies, Poirt Na BPucai, Poirt Na BPúcaí, Port Na Bpúcaí, Port Na BPucai, Port Na Bpúcai, Port Na BPucaí, Port Na BPuchai, Song Of The Pookas.

Deep as the whales sound, as they may have off the Blasket Isles, heard by fishermen. I cannot do this true on the fiddle, though I've been trying for years. This is what it is. Profound thanks.

One of the most intriguing melodies. There is a distinct note of the ethereal and perhaps something of the underworld........ it always makes me feel a bit uneasy.

I have heard it said that this slow air is the sorrowful mourning of the whale, as heard through the skin (or canvas these days) of a currach, a traditional boat found (mostly) along the west coast of Ireland.

my dad said the same thing and one time cillian played it at an outdoor festival and try wind seemed to pass through the tent and made the sound move like ocean waves, one of many good stories he used to tell

This lament, timeless, touches the drawstrings deep within us, connecting us with a greater existence. Beautifully and inspiring expressed; pause to reflect; pause to engage.

Brilliant rendition of a very beautiful and haunting air!! Absolutely wonderful playing - serious Uileann pipers are few and far between. It's the first time hearing this guy and I'm impressed! Bearing in mind my benchmark is Plantxy (Liam o Flynn)...fair praise indeed 👍

At odd moments I get this sort of music of screeching dissonance where the spirit is in painful confusion trying to make sense of it all. I love the deep melancholia of the Irish soul. It sets them apart from the English.

Thank you for posting this wondrous piece! The sea and all the creatures there-in and the fairies still sing to us, I think, but some of us, (like me,) need to take the time to learn to listen.
